A fascinating comparison: Blazers vs. Pacers

Lets go back two seasons. The 2009-10 Indiana Pacers finished 32-50. Didnt make the playoffs. They had one guy they were building around: Danny Granger. 4th in the division. Hmmm? Doesnt that sound a lot like the Portland Trailblazers this last season? 4th in division, no playoffs, building around an all-star forward? Hmmm

Now look where Indiana is now. They are giving Lebron James a headache in the semi-finals and winning IN Miami. They have one of the most balanced rosters in the league. My proposal is that the Blazers should seriously look into getting David Morway because he helped turn the Indiana franchise around very quickly.

PG- Indiana has a young, athletic, scoring PG in Darren Collision. They also have a veteran defender and passer in George Hill. Its a combo that works. You need both at that position. Get players like this, not rookies.

SG - They have an upcoming SG, Paul George, who plays good defense for his age. We've got Matthews who could probably get better going forward.

SF- They have an aggressive scoring SF in Danny Granger who can also defend the wing. He has given Lebron a run for his money multiple times the last few years. He's not elite, but he has been an all-star.

PF- They have David West, an all-star scorer and defender who is a LEADER and is very vocal with his team. Yes we have LA, and he needs to be the type of leader on the floor that West is. If you've watched the Pacers lately, West's veteran presence has made a huge impact. He yells at the young guys when he needs to and he praises them when appropriate. We need a guy with this character.

C - They have Roy Hibbert, we have...nobody. He's young and already an all-star. And he played FOUR years at a great basketball school. I'm tired of these 1 and done centers who do nothing in the NBA. Get someone with a good IQ who can develop like HIbbert has.

Bench - Dahntay Jones - good defender, can score. Louis Amundson, energy guy who fights for boards. Leandro Barbosa - the efficient scorer off the bench. 6th man that every good team has (James Harden, Jason Terry, etc)

I'm jealous of this Pacers team and I think they are exactly the type of model Portland should try to follow. Frank Vogel may be a little too opinionated and confident in his words at times, but the Blazers havent had that for a long time. We need someone who is bold. I'm tired of timid guys on the court and on the bench. The Pacers are a team to emulate. It only took them two years to go from nothing to a contender against the big 3 of Miami.

    Who's with me?

No, Pacers have ugly jerseys. I like red and black better.

We need defenders to emulate the Pacers say what you want but so far no one on the team has proven to be a great defender.

However, there are not that many great defensive options available this summer so it will be a major battle to get to that level.

I personally have really liked the way the Pacers have put that team together. It is a VERY complete team. They are just missing a decent back up at C (they do have cap room at the end of this year too... scary).

IMO Our management has done a great job of allowing us to use 3 avenues to upgrade our team. 1.We have the draft (2 first rounders +2 second rounders), 2. Free agency (we will have north of 10 mil in cap space if we keep batum/Hickson due to them being restricted FAs, and decent cap holds), and 3. trading (great young pieces + draft picks).

Here are some options I feel would REALLY help our team +they are actually obtainable players unlike Hibbert/McGee/Lopez who will not be dropped from their teams:

FA*  Louis Amundson, Mo williams, Chris Kaman, Chauncey Billups, CJ Miles, Goran Dragic, Leandro Barbosa, Jameer Nelson, and Jason Kidd

RFA*  Eric Gordon, Danilo Gallinari, George Hill (if they grab someone like D will in FA), and Michael Beasley

    Trades*
Evans, Cousins = Matthews, N. Smith, 1st round pick (nj pick) and a 2nd rounder (maybe both
1st rounders instead of one 1st and one 2nd) ///
        Darren Collison = Babbit, and 1st round pick (6th or 11th pick)///
        Kanter = E. Williams, Kurt Thomas, and a 2nd round pick ///
Okafor = Matthews, Babbit, N. Smith (way too much but it works and we need a C) ///
Bledsoe = Babbit (not a huge fan of this trade either) ///

This is just a taste of the options we have, but I feel like if we want a C we will have to trade for one. Drummond is nice, but he might not fall to us in the draft if the picks stay where they are. We could trade up for him.. IMO this is our best option>

    PG:Dragic, Billups, Smith **FA adds
    SG: Batum, Matthews
SF:Barnes, Batum, Babbit  **1st round NJ pick
    PF: LMA, Hickson
C: Kanter, LMA, Pryz, thabeet **trade Williams and Thomas

+++ Joel freeland, Victor Claver, and any other FA or 2nd round picks

This is a plausible team beacuse we could sign Dragic for much less than 10 mil, and there won't be a huge demand for Billups. We could honestly pick him up for cheaper. This can also be a good defensive team despite Dragic not being a great defender. Having Billups coming back from an injury and not forced to be #1 PG will be a great situation for him to come back and be relevant in the league. This team also has GREAT depth. Is it a title team..? Idk it depends on how good Barnes and Kanter are. Both of them haven't got a real chance yet. It would be fun to watch. Plus Batum could dominate at SG and wouldn't be forced to play so many positions. He would than have the task of focusing on picking apart smaller SGs on both ends of the court.

I know I am not a GM, but I love feedback on these types of posts. I mainly just want to see the best outcome for my Blazers. From Afghanistan.. GO BLAZERS!! Do good things in this offseason!!

I just realised that in my situation we could still have our 2nd first round pick aswell.. Jeremy Lamb, Terrance Jones, Jared Sullinger, Kendall Marshall, Perry Jones III, Fab Melo, Meyers Leonard, and maybe even Zeller or Lillard... but I really don't want one of those two.

I think Portland should trade LA for Enes Kanter, and Derrick Favors. With that we can resign JJ and bring over Joel Freeland and we not have 4 quality bigs instead of 2.

We currently only have LA and Hickson that is 2 quality bigs.

I would never trade LA for just Kanter and Favors. Yes they both have upside and talent, but LA is already at an All-Star status. Why would we trade him for these two less talented players, where maybe one of them would reach that same level. I think we would only trade LA if it was for a dynamic PG or a very talented SG/SF. We could trade LA for another big only if it was for someone with the potential of Anthony Davis.

Kanter and Favors plus a 2014 first round pick for LA would be fine unfortunately I think the Jazz would try and force us to take on Devin Harris in the deal. Which could be okay since he would only have one season left on his contract making him a nice piece for a team who is looking to cut salary to go after CP3, D. Howard, M. Ellis, S. Curry, B. Jennings, T. Evans, J. Harden, J. Smith, B. Griffin and other free agents in 2013.

I believe he could net a first round pick next season or a nice role player thus increasing the value of the trade.

What turned the Pacers around was ditching their conservative draft ways. They always seemed to take the safe route come draft time (Tyler Hansbrough) but a couple years back they took a gamble on Paul George and it paid off.

Unless we find a superstar, somehow, building a  team like the 04 Pistons or current Pacers is how a team in Portland is going to have to compete. The only downside is we don't have that star to carry us on a nightly basis or give the ball to him in the clutch. This Pacer team looks good now, but who gets the ball, down 1, with 7 seconds to go? Even the 04 Pistons had Rip and Chauncey to bail them out in the clutch.

I think we need to take a risk otherwise I do not see use finding that other superstar.
