Sources: Spurs Eyeing Nicolas Batum via Chris Haynes of Comcast Sports Northwest
The number I'm hearing Portland Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum will command this offseason is $10-11 million per, according to a few league executives when Batum becomes a restricted free agent.

And, I'm being told by multiple sources that the San Antonio Spurs will make a hard push to attain the promising small forward.
Nicolas would have no problem meshing with the San Antonio Spurs as his French national teammate Tony Parker is the floor general and he even thought he was going to be drafted by San Antonio in 2008 (see his draft day suit colors)-

“I was shocked,” Batum told CSNNW.com. “I thought for sure I was headed to San Antonio. I was talking with Tony (Parker) and the guys and then Houston drafts me out of nowhere. I never worked out for them. They had T-Mac (Tracy McGrady) and (Shane) Battier at that time, and I was confused. Then I was traded to Portland and I was like 'okay, that's better'.”
And these were the words Nic's agent used after the negotiations broke down between the Trail Blazers and them before the deadline to extend his contract passed-
"When Batum becomes a restricted free agent, we'll look at the other 29 teams before we talk to the Blazers," Ndiaye told CSNNW.com. "The Blazers had their chance."

At that price with all of our question marks we cannot honestly consider matching. Nico will do well in San Antonio because their system is so good. While Portland is in a giant state of flux, if the team lands someone like Tom Thibodeau as their next coach then maybe you match that amount because Thibs has shown an ability to constantly get the most out of his guys on the defensive side of the ball. Without a good system in place let him go.

Everything Haynes mentioned in his article is correct. Nicolas wanted to be drafted by the Spurs in 2008. He thought he was going to be drafted by the Spurs. One of his closest friends, Tony Parker, is a cornerstone in San Antonio. And he admire Coach Pop.

Before this season, I would have agreed that the Spurs will make a push for Nic, because they were looking for their next Bruce Bowen; a small forward who can hit the outside shot and defend the opponent's primary wing scoring option on a nightly basis. There's only one holdup: San Antonio already found their man. His name? Kawhi Leonard.

You have to be a special player to start on Pop's team, let alone do it as a 20-year-old rookie. Not only has Kawhi started in 38 games for the Western Conference leading Spurs, but he's getting major minutes (24 a night) and proving to be one of the draft's biggest steals (taken at #15 by Indiana). Along with averaging 7.9 points, on 49% shooting from the field, Kawhi is picking up where Bowen left off as he's draining 38% of his attempts from 3, grabbing 5.1 rebounds and showing a defensive prowess San Antonio hasn't had since Bruce.

So why would the Spurs go after Nic? Where would Batum even play? A lot of people think Nic's natural position is the 2, but would the Spurs shell out $11 million on a shooting guard when they already have Manu Ginobili? Aging or not, Manu is still Manu. If the Spurs got Batum for $11 million, their two shooting guards would run the organization a combined $24 million (Manu makes $13 mill). That's a lot of cheddar for a franchise that is known for finding hidden gems (Danny Green, George Hill, Gary Neal, Matt Bonner, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, etc).

Finally, will the Spurs even have the funds to make an offer? According to Hoopshype, the Spurs will have $48.2 million tied up in salaries if the team picks up DeJaun Blair's $1 million option and Patty Mills chooses to opt in for another season at $1 million. The projected salary cap for this upcoming season is estimated to be around $60 million according to the New York Post. But, the Spurs have their own free agents to tender to first. Tim Duncan, Danny Green, and Gary Neal are just a handful of the players who are free agents this July and with the way each has performed this year, you would think they would look to lock them up first and foremost. Even though the Spurs don't have to factor in a First-Round pick into their 2013 salaries (Golden State owns the pick courtesy of the Richard Jefferson trade), those three players alone will push the Spurs well over the salary cap.

If San Antonio used the stretch provision on Stephen Jackson they would open up 6 million more cap space this year. Enough to resign Duncan at a significant discount something he will likely do and to offer Batum around 10 million a season.

Let's say Duncan signs for 6 million. Then they would have the original 10 million in salary cap space, but they still would have Neal and Green to handle and I just don't see either not being taken care of by the Spurs. Even if they choose just one and theoretically sign him for $3 million, there's only $7 million left (not counting 2nd round picks) and that doesn't seem like enough to make a huge offer for Nic, or at least one that will make the Trail Blazers think twice about matching.

I double checked and Jackson's contract cannot be stretched so I am not sure how they are going to make that kind of offer as well. Maybe they can negotiate a buy out for him if they can do a buy out for Jackson at half of his salary. That would allow them to keep Neal and Blair and still have 14 million in cap room, give 3 of that to Green and offer Nico 11 and there you go. Of course to do this Duncan would have to be willing to accept the teams Mid level exception.

If San Antonio picked up Batum then I would legit be upset. They know how to develop players and to see Batum flourish with the a team like the Spurs...not a happy thought.

He is not worth $10M.  We need a small forward not only hit outside jumpshots but play in the paint.  Someone like Bobby Gross.

Give Batum $7-8mil max. If he doesnt take it,let him bounce.Or move him to the 2 guard spot where he seems comfortable, and draft a small forward. Then we go after Aaron brooks.

If Nico could find the right motivation he could easily earn 10 million a season but the dude is so laid back he just does not seem willing to put in the effort. I could live with his 14 points and 4.5 rebounds per game if for 30 minutes he played not stop playoff quality defense. If San Antonio can get him to do that then they got a good deal if not then they got a slightly above average SF taking up a huge portion of their cap space.

Since the firing of Nate, Batum has averaged almost 15 ppg and and the nights that he doesn't score are those that he either doesn't have a lot of minutes or just has a good night on the boards (for the most part). Honestly people, perhaps he doesn't isn't worth the 10 to 11 million a year, yet the spurs certainly think so! With their track record, I think I would perhaps think about the situation Batum was given and think again about giving him up.

Nothing about this team is working right now. Redo the roster, redo the staff, redo the freaking jerseys for all I care. Just keep the team in Portland and make them winners. If that means letting Batum, Felton, Hickson, Flynn, Joel--and whomever I'm missing--sign with other teams, then OK. The team is the Portland Trailblazers and will always be the Portland Trailblazers no matter who is playing for us. And the current team didn't even come close to the playoffs, so I see no reason to freak out at any major roster moves. Also, to anyone who doesn't want to see Batum flourish with another team, I have to point out that this team has been running on potential for too long. So far, of all our would-be stars, LaMarcus is the only one who has proven himself AND has stayed healthy. Other than him, I'm sick of savings-bond type players. Let's get some guys that have shown they know how to play NBA basketball.

Right place, right time.  SA + Nic, yes.  Prtlnd + Nic, no.  As much as I've been known to ride Batum on these boards, I DO believe that he will improve, perhaps even significantly enough to make many within this fanbase say, "I told you so" and make Jermaine Oneal comparisons.  This situation is not right for either Portland or Nic though, and I feel both sides will ultimately benefit if #88 moves on, provided the decisions made during this historic offseason by Portland's front office are sound ones.  Half of Portland's well publicized flexibility would be lost in resigning Nic here.  For THIS team, at THIS juncture, just not a prudent move.

Bdawg very well said, I think a lot of believe Nico will get better the question is how long would it take in a Blazer uniform and I just do not see it happening soon enough for him to earn 11 million a season.

Good ridens Nico, play for Team France where your head is at or go play Pro in France.  They can pay you unlimited money and not constrained my the Salary CAP of the NBA.  Talent is not as good as NBA but if your heart is in France then GO!

Was Batum even given the opportunity to excel? Look at LA for instance. He just road the wave of Brandon like everyone else and wasn't given a chance to become who he is today. Let's not forget that this team is still in the Brandon mindset, the mindset of someone else saving them with an end of the game winner. This was a shortened season and to judge anyones play is gonna be difficult to do.

    Oer Ben Golliver

During his exit interview on Friday, Portland Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum expressed confidence that the team would match any offers made to him when he becomes a restricted free agent this summer and that he would return to Portland next season.

"They're going to match. They will match, I think, anyway. We'll see what happens. ... Nobody has told me that but they've made me understand that... They want me a lot, they love me, they want me long-term on this franchise."

Did they tell you that today?

    "Everyday."

    Very confident you'll be back?

"I'm pretty sure, 99 percent, that they're going to match."
