    Rebuild vs Retool

Winning a NBA title is the ultimate goal for any NBA franchise. Some people have suggested that the Blazers are in an enviable position this off-season and that is certainly true but I have bigger plans for this team.

In 2013, an incredible class of free agents hits the market. Led by Dwight Howard and Chris Paul currently Portland would not have very good chances of signing either player. In the future, we still might not but this plans design is about going all in for a title.

    Step One: Cut Salary
    Step Two: Go Young
    Step Three: Get Defensive
Step Four: Make a plan B

I love LA but he has the biggest salary on the team so to make room for the 37 million it would take to sign Howard and CP3 he has to go.

Portland trades Lamarcus Aldridge to Charlotte in exchange for #1 pick in the 2012 draft, Byron Mullens and an unprotected first round pick next season. Ideally, for LA I would like to net three first round picks but in this case, I am willing to settle for Mullens and an unprotected pick next season.

Reason- Cutting LA’s salary is one of the biggest reasons for this trade. The other reason for this trade is Anthony Davis he plays the same position as LA and will be an elite NBA defender for years to come at worst he turns into Serge Ibaka best result is Marcus Camby or in other words defensive player of the year. The trade also gets us what could easily end up, as a lottery pick next season, which would be an important building block should we fail to acquire CP3 or Howard. Mullens would simply be a throw in here to help Charlotte stay under the cap and gives Portland an expiring contract for next off-season.

Portland signs and trades Nicholas Batum and the #41 pick in the 2012 draft to Washington in exchange for Rashard Lewis and the #2 pick in the draft. For taking Rashard’s huge salary, I would like to get an additional pick in the future but for simplicity, this is the trade.

With the #2 pick in the 2012 draft Portland takes Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Reason- defense, effort and athleticism the kid looks very much like a young Gerald Wallace or Andre Iguodala. Rashard has a huge cap figure but it expires just in time to chase CP3 and Howard, he also can teach Kidd-Gilchrist and Babbitt a lot in one season.

Portland trades Wesley Matthews and #6 pick in the 2012 NBA draft to Boston in exchange for Avery Bradley and the #20 pick in the NBA draft.

With the #20 pick in the 2012 draft Portland takes Tony Mitchell.

Reason- Bradley’s defense might be the best on the Celtics and that is say a lot not to mention he comes at a much cheaper price than does Wesley Matthews. At 6’8”, Mitchell would be a little undersized to play PF but he has shown the skills to be effective at both SF and PF. The kid reminds me a lot of Kenyon Martin and he is one of the best defenders in the draft.

With the #11 pick Portland selects Meyers Leonard.

Reason- Portland can bring over Joel Freeland but I am not sure how much money he would command at Center, Meyers is a solid center that is good at everything but does not really excel at anything. At best, his play would rival that of Greg Monroe at worst he is Robin Lopez. In addition, Meyers represents a solid back up for Howard and if he reaches Monroe, status would be a great plan B.

Portland now has five players to serve as long term building blocks without including any member of the current roster. Add in Kurt Thomas, Nolan Smith, Luke Babbitt, Elliot Williams, Shawne Williams (not likely to opt out) current Blazers to Mullens and Jamison and Portland has 12 players. 13 if Jamal Crawford does not opt out. The team’s salary would be around 52 million with Crawford and 47 million without him.

With Nolan Smith as the only PG on the team Portland could draft a back up PG in the second round or sign one or two to one year contracts. They could also allow Avery Bradley to run PG although he seems better suited as a SG.

This young Blazer team would have talent but ideally, I want them to finish in the top 5 of the lottery next season.

    2013 off-season

Portland holds a team option on Babbitt, Williams and Smith. Depending on how they played during the season, Portland could decide if each was worth retaining. Even adding them, Portland would still have enough money to sign CP3 and Howard albeit barely.

Long term I see Elliot with the most potential of the three but Luke’s shooting gives him value on any team.

The 2013 draft has five great prospects and Portland playing so many rookies should be in a position to take one of them.

Shabazz Muhammad- the #2 high school prospect in league has drawn comparisons to Kobe Bryant and while I think it might be too early for that his ability to score is certainly enough to make him must watch next season.

Cody Zeller- Had the Indiana center declared this season he would have likely been a top ten pick another year of college should elevate him into the top five. He has a great basketball IQ and has very good footwork and offensive moves around the basket.

Nelrens Noel- The #1 high school prospect looks to be an Anthony Davis clone his defense is elite and if he can add on some muscle, it should translate all the way to the NBA.

James Mcadoo- He is a very complete player who like Zeller would have gone in the top ten has he declared this season. He has developed a reputation as a clutch shooter and a harder worker. The only drawback to him is size wise he is right between a SF and PF. With a few posts moves he could be the next Paul Milsap.

Steven Adams- is a relative latecomer to the game but has developed great fundamentals to go with his outstanding size and athletic ability. He should learn a lot next season playing for Pitt and become a good NBA center.

Muhammad and Noel are the two most intriguing prospects out of the five and Portland should be in a position to grab one if not both of them.

With the #1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft Portland selects Shabazz Muhammad.

Depending on where the Bobcats pick lands, Portland might just be able; to select Nelrens Noel if not they should trade up to make sure they are able to get one of the top five.

Portland trades the #10 pick and Elliot Williams to Toronto for the #2 pick in the 2013 NBA draft.

With the #2 pick in the 2013 NBA draft Portland selects Nelrens Noel.

Before free agency begins here is Portland’s current team

PG None Nolan Smith barring a great season will not have his team option renewed opening up additional money for free agency.
SG Avery Bradley this is his more natural position but we could move him back to PG if needed.
SG Shabazz Muhammad his scoring ability is amazing and if he really is the next James Harden or Kobe Bryant Portland will be set here for a while.
    SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
    SF Tony Mitchell
SF Luke Babbitt his scoring and shooting ability will make him valuable and Mitchell’s lack of true position would give us needed depth. Not to mention on a team full of defenders his defense will not be an issue.
    PF Anthony Davis
PF/C Nelrens Noel playing him next to Davis would cause fits in the NBA, as their shot blocking ability would completely wreck other teams.
    C Meyers Leonard

Portland would have nine quality young players to build around if Muhammad scoring carries over into the NBA this team could go from lottery to contender fast, especially if Portland can convince CP3 and Howard to come to Portland.

Portland has agreed to a contract with free agents Chris Paul, Dwight Howard and Tony Allen.

Chris Paul- would finally give the Blazers an elite PG, his defense is great and his ability to close out games is one of the best in the NBA. He is also one of the smartest players on the court. He would make us instant contenders.

Dwight Howard- multiple time defensive player of the year, whose offensive game has developed significantly over time, he makes his teams better with his defense. Howard combined with Davis would make life difficult on every team including Memphis and the Lakers.

Tony Allen- he is widely considered the best perimeter defender in the game and while he is getting older, he would make a great addition to this team.

Portland would absolutely own the paint on defense with Howard being able to take the bigger opponents allowing the thinner Davis and Noel to guard the smaller man in the opponent’s frontcourt. Kidd-Gilchrist, Bradley, Mitchell, Allen and CP3 would lock down opponent’s wings. This team’s defense would be good enough to cover up for any short coming Babbit or Muhammad might possess on that side of the ball.

To lead this team I would hire none other than Tom Thibodeau. Thibs has proven himself to be a great coach will in Chicago but the Bulls failure to reward his success was Portland’s gain.

    Your 2013-2014 Portland Trailblazers
    PG Chris Paul
    PG/SG Avery Bradley
    SG Tony Allen
    SG Shabazz Muhammad
    SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
    SF/PF Tony Mitchell
    SF Luke Babbitt
    PF Anthony Davis
    PF Nelrens Noel
    C Meyers Leonard
    C Dwight Howard

I am not sure the team would win the title in their first year together but this team would certainly contend for many years to come. If defense wins championships this would be the team to beat in the NBA.

Though I enjoyed reading your retooling effort I do not believe we can assume every team we would have to negotiate with would be sitting there waiting to do business with Portland.  Remember they are trying to improve their team as well.  It is fun to speculate and you put a lot of time and effort into your proposal.  We all agree the blazers need to get better.  This does appear to be a rebuild rather than a retool.

Ricky you are certainly right but I believe I went out of my way to make the trades alluring enough to the other teams that they would be willing to make the deal.

the problem of trading for sure players for picks is we have no idea how good college players will convert info nba players- i think outside davis, no one knows who will be good or great-

also in 4 yrs davis will want a max deal, and after signing 2 max guys this is now impossible= the core falls apart at some point

advantage of starting with LA is he is a key core piece starting at 14 mil, which is not bad at all for a player of his caliber, even the worse case senario in the off season, i think we can still put together a strong core with no batum

    -e gordon
    -cj miles

if u look at this start u have 2 core players both asking price around 14 mil, dragic solid pg, mathews is worsth something, cj miles is a good piece, and priz will come in and do good work and hickson solid off bench, this is a decent start to a team before our picks, and before we look  for trades (mathews) and building a solid cast (this team is worst case, no williams nash or brooks, and a failed attempt at iguadola or other key sg)

The perk though jams is if they team is winning titles with Paul Allen's deep pockets we would be allowed to keep our players even if it meant going over cap or luxury tax line. I mean just look at the Lakers and their 91 million in team salary. If we get the pieces we can keep them.

I am not saying my approach is the best but it is certainly an option Portland could go in. It is also easier to get good pieces in the draft than people think. Just need to follow a few rules, one do they have an elite skill most of the players I drafted have at least one elite skill for me it was defense. Second, do they have a good basketball IQ, smart players always learn how to adapt this is essential for players to reach their potential. Lastly, how is their motor, you can cover up a lot of stuff with a great motor.

Leonard was probably the only player I drafted that did not fit that mold and I took him because he would be easily replaceable by Freeman and by Howard if he signed.

It will probably be the next GM and coach that gets hired. I am pretty sure we will go with their plan and then critique it to death on the boards

Nice way to state the obvious. I am just wondering would people on the boards be in favor of a short term rebuild like what I proposed or a retool that will get us back into the playoffs but result in virtually no chance at a NBA title.

You can't retool a blown engine. You gotta tear it down and build it back up from scratch. Good news for the Blazers is they have some of the correct parts, but they still need a full rebuild.

Well since people seem in favor of a rebuild what do you think about going all on in on some of the top picks in the draft? Or should we just pick from where we are in the draft?

Folks trying to get us excited, like this is it, this is how we got Brandon and LaMarcus. Biiiiiiig draft day for Portland. No it's not, not yet anyway. 7 n' 11 is a far cry from 2 n' 6. You'd think absolutely the Blazers need to move up on draft day to get the rookies they want.

I would draft Perry Jones and the best guard you can grab. Getting Steve Nash should be #1 priority, just so Mike Rice can quit comparing players with him. Then ending the comparison in a grunt, geesh, or groan. We'll have him here in the flesh.

Unless we can nab Deron Williams away from the Mavs/Nets (maybe add Eric Gordon to that list, too), I'd like to see a rebuild. Trading our picks away for fringe All-Stars the caliber of Gerald Wallace will not get us over the hump to contender status. Not to mention, we don't need to be contenders right now. If we draft well and spend our money wisely this summer, we could be prepared to make a run in 2-3 years. By that time Kobe's run with the Lakers will be on empty and the Spurs (one would hope) would be out of the picture, leaving only the Thunder and Clippers in our way. Who knows, maybe OKC can't afford to keep their core intact, making the path towards the Finals a smoother one?
