    Via Oregon Live-
The top priority is finding a point guard. Then finding a center.

"We are dreaming big," Miller said.

So think Steve Nash. Think Deron Williams. Think Roy Hibbert. Brook Lopez.

"We can't say 'We are going after this guy, that guy, and this guy'," Miller said. "But we have positioned ourselves to compete for those big-name players. And this is a strong draft. Whether we trade our picks, or use our picks, we are going to get better going into next season."
Whether the Blazers can lure a big-time free agent to Portland remains to be seen. Outside of Andre Miller, the Blazers have never been able to lure a star to Portland through free agency. But they have two things going for them: More free agent money than they have ever had, and a star player in LaMarcus Aldridge who is willing to recruit.

Earlier this season, at the All-Star Game in Orlando, Aldridge said he planted a seed with Nash about signing in Portland.

"Just messing with him about coming here," Aldridge said. "I was throwing little stuff out there."

Aldridge said he was impressed with Nash's personality -- "he's nice" -- and the two developed a playful banter throughout the weekend about Nash coming to Portland.

"It was like a running joke," Aldridge said.
Aldridge also happens to be close to Williams, the New Jersey guard who sat out Wednesday's game with an illness. Aldridge and Williams grew up together in Dallas, and are one year apart in age. In the offseason, Williams is an avid golfer, and he often plays the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas course in Irving, where Aldridge has a home on the third hole.

"We have always joked about going home together one day, of playing in Dallas one day," Aldridge said. "But I haven't talked to him. I haven't looked at the free agent market, but I will after the season is over, just to see if I can help get anyone that they are trying to get."

why is everyone hung up on deron williams? Maybe he's not old, but he caused huge problems in utah, causing problems in new jersey right now, demands star treatment and never seems happy, and treats people around him like dirt. So what if he and aldridge were friends, he's not the type of player we want on the blazers.

geez 247, don't poke holes in the bag like that. We never liked Jerry Sloan over here anyway. He beat on us too much.

I'm not campaigning for Sloan Tobyus, I'm just sayin I don't want a drama queen for a point guard on the Blazers...

His numbers are good, but we've all seen that quality players can fall apart when they come to a new city alot more easily (and more likely) than they can come in and play their top game. Don't expect Deron, Nash, or anyone else to come to Portland and be the magic perfect answer to our playoff woes as soon as they get here. Point guards take time to adjust and find their fit with new players and a new system. It's about the team, no matter how highly ranked the guy at point is; if the teammates are not hitting shots and playing well, his numbers get alot worse.

Going after a superstar, especially one with a volatile personality, could very easily be a great way for Portland to shoot themselves in the foot. I'd rather have a top 10 or 15 point guard who has drive, style, and chemistry with his teammates and his city, than a top 3(disagree) point guard who demands his followers (in Utah and Jersey) treat him like royalty. That type of personality will NEVER be good in this city, with the owner or the fans.

If Deron Williams comes to Portland, you better hope he either changes his attitude or that he leads us to a championship in his first year here, because eventually he will either rub us the wrong way or grow tired of his small market slumming vacation and go back to looking at the hotspots. Personally I'd rather skip it and find a pg who doesn't have high potential of being a douche. IMHO.

thanks Stacks, I'm just sick of people acting like the Blazers are now a videogame team just because we have some draft picks and room to trade... this game is NOT just a numbers game. You can't look at a player and say "...well he's a top tier in his position, that's all I need to know! Lets go after him" there are so many more factors that are equally important as his highlight reels. ESPECIALLY in Portland.

If you bring a point guard up here that is highly likely to cause personal friction between himself and other players or staff or the owner, all you are doing is putting the Blazers in a position to have another let down season like this year... cuz halfway through the season SOMEONE (whether it's deron, paul, coach, or teammates) will say enough is enough and the team will fall apart again. Thing is, that time we'll be wasting a FULL season, and will have less excuses as to what happened.

PORTLAND DOES NOT WANT DERON. Or at least not his whiny attitude.

PART of Portland wants Deron. Not some huge majority. (The same part of Portland that wants Deron is probably most of the same part of Portland that wanted Dwight here, or thinks anyone else with star power that they can get to come in NBA2k12 is a possibility for the blazers.)

None of that means that Deron would be a guaranteed good fit here as a point guard, or that he would be here long term enough for us to actually achieve the goals we would want to use him for.

And once again, the whole time he's here, we're taking the risk that he causes more drama that hurts the team, or even worse he blows it up in a way that makes this season look like we were ready to make it to the finals in comparison. While PART of Portland thinks that risk would be worthwhile, there's plenty others that really don't.

I'd rather have players on the team that, through team chemistry and unique combinations of opportunity, still have a good chance to carry the Blazers farther in the playoffs, but in a worst case scenario where it doesn't work for us, at least we'll still have players that the Fans have a relationship with.

Whereas in a worst case scenario with a player like Deron, let's say he comes to Portland, has trouble fitting at first, and after <knock on wood> some unfortunate injuries or losses in close games like we've seen this year, we have another season that falls short of expectations, he throws a fit the way that dramaqueen's do, and we have to say goodbye to any combination of players, coaches, or stars to keep him satisfied/make sure we get what we paid for from him (assuming people want him because they think it will instantly get us to the finals, because otherwise why would you think he's worth it at all?).

    NOT WORTH IT. NO DERON.

I know that I don't want Deron Williams. Like was stated before, he is an amazing player and there is no doubt about it. Yet every time I have seen him play, all he does is whine and complain. If I'm gonna pay premium dollar for a a premium player then he has to have a drive as well. He is more of an "I" player then a TEAM player.

I bet he'd love to have San Antonio's back up point guard over any point guard Portland currently posseses.

I just do not want to see Portland go after Brook Lopez. Sure the dude can score but he is an atrocious rebounder, who if paired with LA would have us lose the rebound battle every night.

Yeah the Utah bid put a bad taste in my mouth about Williams. He might not be a fan favorite but he could be amazing for the franchise. From a business standpoint, I say go for it. Even as a Blazer fan, I say go for it. Frankly this season has put me into a position of wanting to see this team be successful even at the cost of bringing an incredibly talented headcase in to run the point. What's the worst that could happen? He'll butt heads with Nate and fracture the team? Wait what... Even with the potential for another set-back, Portland NEEDS a star PG. They need a rudder. Deron Williams is a savant. He may need extra attention or whatever but it doesn't change the fact that he's brilliant at what he does. With a little hesitation in my heart, I say bring him here.

I agree the elite point guards in the NBA all have issues. Rondo, Westbrook and Deron all have attitudes. Rose and Paul have injury concerns. Nash is old. No one is perfect but if you do not take the chance on signing on the NBA's top 25 players then what is the point.
