Trail Blazers (25-29) vs Nets (19-35)

This will be the first matchup between the Trail Blazers and Nets since the trade deadline deal which sent Gerald Wallace to New Jersey for their Top-3 Lottery Protected Pick. At first, the Nets didn't respond at all to the trade, losing six of seven including five in a row. But it seems they have worked out the kinks and are on a three-game winning streak (before they play the Lakers tonight in L.A.) with wins over the Warriors and Kings on the road on consecutive nights. New Jersey is the rare team this year in the lockout season that actually excels on the road more so then at home (12-16 road record, 7-19 home record).

Since the Nets have the Lakers tonight, Portland gets New Jersey on the second night of a back-to-back. This is where the Trail Blazers need to play on-ball defensive pressure for a full 48 minutes; do anything it takes to disrupt Deron Williams. While the Blazers are coming off of back-to-back games themselves, if they go deep into their bench, they should be able to force New Jersey into turnovers which will lead to easy buckets on the fast break. The Nets cough up the ball over 15 times a game -- eight most in the NBA, while Portland forces over 15 turnovers a game. And after Monday's loss against Utah, turnovers are the talk of the town. Whichever team is able to take care of the ball, should win.

With Brook Lopez still sidelined for another month or so (most likely the rest of the season), New Jersey is forced into starting Johan Petro at center. Kris Humphries gets the nod alongside him and while Humphries is one of the league's best rebounders, that starting frontcourt isn't the most offensively gifted which should allow Portland to play both of them straight up and not giving their shooters, Anthony Morrow and Marshon Brooks, open looks off of what-could-have-been double teams. On offense, it is imperative for the Trail Blazers to remember who butters their bread -- LaMarcus Aldridge. Too often they forget about their All-Star and that is usually  when the offense bogs down and the opponent creeps back into the game. If LA is getting his necessary touches down low and the Blazers are able to score 45+ points in the paint, they will win.

Force turnovers. Take care of the ball. Feed Aldridge down low. There you have it, the recipes for a Trail Blazers win.

I think it is better for the team to lose to nj. I like to win but it help the draft if we lose. If we are going to win then win out and make the playoffs and kick azz.......

Has it ever occurred to anyone that we currently have no first round pick in 2013 because we traded ours to Charlotte? It would not bother me one bit if we ended up not getting New Jersey's pick until 2013.

Put on a good show for Deron Williams?  He might feel more like coming here if we can show him a little of our upside in this game.  Looks like we'll still have his old buddy Shawne Williams.

Per 750 The Game, Jason Petersen and CIP this morning, I will be chanting "DER-ON WILL-LIAMS" clap-clap clapclapclap...starting it if I have to.  Tobyus, prior to this season, you would have been hard pressed to find a bigger GW fan.  Now however, I will be boo-ing his every move and introduction.  I believe he was among a select few verterans who gave up on Nate, this team, and yes...this fan base.  Fat check for a quitter.  Not down with that.

As long as Felton is on the floor, we're playing six on four.

Batum on Williams may work to disrupt his rhythm but i 'm more worried about who's gonna guard Gerald Wallace .I think he is the x factor in this game. He has very intimate knowledge of everybody on the team and we don't want him to go all"PREDATOR" on us.He has the the most potential to get in our passing lanes and disrupt our game!

    Post-Game Quotes:
Coach Kalb Canales on Hickson and Aldridge playing together-

“We’ve talked about that combination. We’re excited about that combination, especially down the stretch. We feel that they’re playing off each other really well. Getting those reps and getting that time at practice and during the games is something we’re excited about.”

Nicolas Batum on losing the lead before getting it back-
“We just calmed down. We did something to get the lead so get back to it. Get back to it and just play defense first, rebound and then run offense, get the ball inside, run around and get some open shots. That’s what we needed.”
    Coach Canales on team defense-

“Our team defense was very good tonight. I thought we were helping the helper. We got into our defensive rotations really well. We closed out to shooters. I felt that they hit more than 6 threes, but that’s a good number for us. We don’t want them to hit more than 7. We just had 5 guys committed to the defensive end tonight.”

No question Hickson was the most impactful Blazer last night.  Unfortunate there are not stats kept (or at least made public) denoting how many touches on the ball a given player has throughout the coarse of a game...and at both ends of the floor.  Hickson is not only the most productive player per minute, per game, and on a very consistent basis...one might go as far as to say he IS emerging as the team's leader as a result.  Canales is auditioning himself, so if there is to be a transition, expect it to be closely managed and slow to fruition.  Hickson was AGAIN a beast last night, and was around the ball EVERY POSSESSION.  What we see for rebounds in the box score are just the ones secured.  How often do any of you see a two-handed put-back, AT THE IRON, off a missed free throw?  Was amazed watching his activity level and nose for the ball.  Start him at the 5 alongside LA at the 4, bringing Priz off the bench.  Caleb, if you're trying to win games and win a job, THIS is your best line-up.  At 6'9", Hicky may seem undersized at the 5, but I believe he plays much bigger than his frame and is physical enough to battle MOST opposing centers, with a handful of obvious exceptions.

    Keep it up JJ

agreed bdawg jj and LA together is straight beast mode, i think JJ is coaxing LA's inner beast out as well. LA seems to be dunking like a monster ever since hicksons poster school in "lame lob city" felton is starting to click with everyone on the lob passes and flynn was an immediate fit. feel bad for nolan but now he has competition and motivation to get better. and we are fortunate enough to have pryz as a back up for those few centers that jj can't handle. batum has got some nice lobs too, if JJ lights a fire under his butt like he has LA this team will be pretty fun to watch, might even push one of griffins offensive fouls out of the top 10 on espn every now and then.

Last nights game was terrible minus the late 4th quarter run. Our defense was terrible how do you let this team without Lopez and Williams take the lead in the 4th quarter?

they have been doing that all season, difference last night was they put a little effort into the 4th instead of giving up. would be nice to see them grow as a team from it and learn to put effort into the whole game.

Anyone remember Lloyd Neal? This is not a name that should be handed out to anyone and J.J. has yet to earn it but his stamina and leadership out on the floor is quietly and quickly starting to impress me. He has done more for the Blazers this year than ANYONE on this organization.

The Nets Gerald Green is a very impressive young guard. He reminds me of Elliot Williams.

The pick is Top-12 or 13 protected for the next 3 years I believe, then it becomes unprotected. So if we have a great draft/offseason and do well in the 2013 season, then Charlotte would get a late 20's pick. Or if we struggle again and make the lottery, more likely we will keep it.
