Your goal if you choose to accept it is to transform the Portland Trailblazers from a lottery team to NBA championship contenders.

-Remember if you are making trades make them realistic. Miami will never trade us Lebron so if you include that in your response or similar trades you will lose all credibility. I know Portland has some smart fans so lets act that way.
-Do not forget that unless Portland lands back in the lottery next year we will not have a 1st round draft pick (owed to Charlotte for Gerald Wallace).
-Be wary of the salary cap. For this thread it will be set at 58.04 million.
-Do not forget the cap holds http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/draftpickcapholds.jsp
http://www.hoopsworld.com/portland-trail-blazers-team-salary  Note Portland Currently has 40.5 million in cap holds meaning we have 0 cap room unless we re-sign, lose or renounce our rights to players.
    - For this simulation Portland gets the #5, #10, #39, #40, #42 picks in the draft.

Portland has a long ways to go from where they are right now in order to contend for a title. So we have lots of work.

Since the salary cap issue is complex I will break things down for you.
First Portland would have a cap hold for their 2 first round picks this year.
    #5 $2,812,200
    #10 $1,865,300
That is $4,677,500 in tied up cap space.

In addition Portland has a cap hold of $40,540,975 from J. Pryzbilla,H. Thabeet, R. Felton,J. Flynn, N. Batum, and JJ.Hickson.
-Portland also has $27,128,290 tied up in L. Aldridge, W. Matthews, L. Babbit, N. Smith, E. Williams, C. Smith and K. Thomas.
-S. Williams has a Player Option for $3,135,000
-J. Crawford has a Player Option for $5,225,000 if both options are exercised Portland 2012-2013 salaries would be $35,488,290. Add in the Cap holds for the 1st round picks and Portland is at $40,165,790. Things get even worse if you add in the cap holds from our current free agents. That would mean Portland is looking at a team salary of $80,706,765. Or in other words zero cap room. So obviously we have some work to do in order to sign some free agents that our not our own.
-Note Portland also has to factor in $1,045,600 to their cap for V. Claver and $850,800 for J. Freedland unless Portland renounces their rights to them. They do not count against the cap during the season but do for Free Agency.

    My Off-season
Step One- Renounce draft rights to V. Claver and J Freedland.
Step Two- J. Crawford and S. Williams opt out of their current deals saving us $8,360,000 and reducing our team salaries to $72,346,765. Note Williams is likely to Opt-in requiring Portland to buy him out, which will reduce our cap space
Step Three- Renounce our rights to H. Thabeet, J. Flynn and R. Felton  This would cut $26,156,880 from our cap figure leaving us at $46,189,885 and $11,854,115 in cap room.
Step Four- Making a qualifying offer to N. Batum $3,166,231 *note this does not affect his cap hold.
Step Five- Renounce our rights to JJ Hickson this would raise our cap room to $18,917,726.

    Scenario One
Step One- Offer D. Williams a Max contract 4 yrs, 74 Million, which is a $17,779,458 cap figure for next season. If Williams signs with Portland we would only have $1,138,268 in cap room left.
Step Two- Resign N. Batum 4 yrs, 38 Million teams will likely front load their offer sheets forcing Portland to eat up most of their mid-level exception to retain him.
Step Three- Take the remainder of the mid level exception and sign Ian Mahinmi.
Step Four-Resign J. Pryzbilla vet min.
Step Four- Draft Andre Drummond #5
Step Five- Trade the #10 pick to Boston for pick #16 and future second round pick
Step Six- Draft John Henson #16
Step Seven- Trade Pick #39 and #40 to Memphis for pick #23
Step Eight- Draft Doron Lamb #23
Step Nine- Draft Jesse Sanders #42

    Your 2012-2013 Trailblazers
    PG Deron Williams
    PG Nolan Smith
    PG Jesse Sanders
    SG Nicolas Batum
    SG Doron Lamb
    SF Wesley Matthews
    SF Elliot Williams
    SF Luke Babbit
    PF Lamarcus Aldridge
    PF Craig Smith
    PF John Henson
    C Andre Drummond
    C Ian Mahinmi
    C Joel Przybilla

I do not know if this team would be title contenders but they certainly would be deep and should be quite good defensively. If the young players developed this team could become title contenders in a few years.

    My offseason
Step One- Renounce draft rights to V. Claver and J Freedland.
Step Two- J. Crawford and S. Williams opt out of their current deals saving us $8,360,000 and reducing our team salaries to $72,346,765. Note Williams is likely to Opt-in requiring Portland to buy him out, which will reduce our cap space

Step Four- Making a qualifying offer to N. Batum $3,166,231 *note this does not affect his cap hold.
Step Five- Renounce our rights to JJ Hickson this would raise our cap room to $18,917,726.

    Scenario two
Step One- Trade Wesley Matthews and Draft Picks #5 and #10 for Rajon Rondo. Remaining Cap Room $19,090,546. That is right people signing Rondo for 11 next season actually gains us cap room in this trade.
Step Two- Sign Ersan Ilyasova in 27 mpg Ilysaova is averaging 12.6 ppg and 8.7 rpg those numbers translate to 16.8 ppg and 11.6 rpg over 36 mins. I would offer him a contract around 4 years and 28 million. He could be a quality starter or sixth man. I would sign him for 6.5 mil this season then 7 for the next 2 and 7.5 in season 4 This would leave $12,590,546 in cap room.
Step Three- Sign Ian Mahinmi 3 years 10 million. His numbers translate to 12.1 ppg and 9.1 rpg over 36 mins. For the price that is excellent production. Contract breakdown 3 mil, 3.25 mil, 3.75 mil. Remaining cap room $9,590,546.
Step Four-Re-sign Nicolas Batum 4 years 38 million 9.25 mil, 9.5 mil, 9.5 mil, 9.75 mil. Remaining cap room $6,806,641. Note around 6.5 million was already taken in cap room for his hold.
Step Five- Sign Alonzo Gee 3 years 10 million. Gee is a solid defender and someone who will attack the rim. For what he will command in free agency he is a bargain. Remaining cap room $3,806,641.
Step Six- Sign Danny Green 4 years 9 million.  2.25 mil per. He is not likely to get much attention but if you stretch his numbers out over 36 mins. You are looking at 12.9 ppg, 39.2% 3-pt shooting, 5.55 rpg, 1.35 spg, and 1.05 bpg. Those are not all-star numbers but for the price he is a good defender who will easily out perform his contract. Cap remaining $1,556,641.
Step Seven-Re-sign Joel Pryzbilla 2 years 4 million. 2 mil in 2012 with a 2 mil PO. Joel should retire here and this contract would reward him for all he did as well as put us over the cap. The reason for this is it allows us to use our mid-level exception.
Step Eight- Sign Gerald Wallace MLE 4 years 5 mil, 5.4 mil, 5.832 mil, $6,298,560.
Step Nine- Trade Luke Babbit, and Pick #39 for Deron Lamb.
Step Ten- Trade Pick #40,42 and a future second rounder if needed for the rights to Kendall Marshall.

    Your 2012-2013 Portland Trailblazers
    PG Rajon Rondo
    PG Nolan Smith
    PG Kendall Marshall
    SG Nicolas Batum
    SG Danny Green
    SG Deron Lamb
    SF Elliot Williams
    SF Alonzo Gee
    SF Gerald Wallace
    PF Lamarcus Aldridge
    PF Ersan Ilyasova
    PF Craig Smith
    C Ian Mahinmi
    C Joel Pryzbilla
    C Kurt Thomas

This team would be a very good defensive team. The would also be very deep with the exception of Center. This team could go far into the playoffs with their depth. This team would wreck people in the open court.

It would be a lot to risk cutting nearly half of the team to make a run at Williams.  It's gutsy and you couldn't fault us for trying if we went this route.

Do you have your SF's and SG's crossed there?  I gotta say you are totally geeking out on this though.  Don't get me wrong.  I'm impressed with your research...but damn.  I mean for me that post would have taken days to write.  What is your source on all of the contract and cap info?

Watch Portland play, Batum has played much better at the 2 then at the 3, whereas Matthews has been equally as effective or ineffective against 2's or 3's. That is why I labeled them that way. Portland contract info source is listed in original post. There are tons of sites I checked to make sure on the cap info.

I have a third one that I will likely post tomorrow. That one will not be easy to write.

Trade Batum and 2013 1st round draft pick and Felton for Rondo.buy Hibbert or Kamaan. Pick a 2 and a 3 in the draft and go from there. I know this is not popular but I think pigs will fly before Batum gets consistant. I do not want another Wes Matthews contract on someone who might show up offensively.

Barnett fan their is a problem with your trade. The only way we trade Felton and Batum is in a sign and trade. Boston is looking to get younger and rebuild this off-season. Currently, Boston could clear as much as 25 mil in cap space this off-season if they renounce all their free agents. While Boston might have some interest in Batum they would not eat up a large part of their cap space to add him and Felton. Matthews would serve as a replacement for Ray Allen and would represent one of their best options to fill that position this off-season. OJ Mayo is a restricted free agent so Boston could not guarantee signing him. The same goes for Eric Gordon and I do not see them paying the 12 mil a year he will likely require. Someone like Lou Williams would likely be attractive to them but he is not a huge upgrade over Matthews and would not come with extra cap room and two lottery picks.

Aside from player acquisitions who do you guys want to see as our new GM or head coach.

For GM I like Troy Weaver and Dennis Lindsey
However, I also like Larry Brown as Portland's version of Pat Riley. Let him GM and Coach for a couple seasons until he feels comfortable handing the coaching reigns to someone else.

    Coaches
I would like to Portland get someone like Larry Brown or Jerry Sloan someone tough minded.

We should go after Roy hibbert. Even know Indiana we'l most likely match it. There still that SLIM chance they don't. Deron Williams is a cry baby, don't want him on the team

Roy HIbbert would be amazing but would take all of our salary space. He is so highly coveted and imbedded in Indiana's future. They will drop players just to have enough room for him. Unfortunately, there is probably a 5% chance of us getting him. Not saying to drop the idea, but dont plan the offseason thinking we can get him.

Batum is way too passive when he plays the 3, while Matthews plays both the 2 and 3 pretty much the same. Nico maybe be listed as a SF but that does not matter in the overall scheme of things.
