Mike & Mike made a very good comment last night on their broadcast about Batum.  They noticed his game has been off since he was moved from SG to SF.  Wesley Matthews plays good in both positions.

What made Batum so strong at SG was the height difference he had (plus his long arms made for great defense against some of the premier SG's).

They are both the same height so why not switch them?

    Your thoughts?

Batum has had big games coming of the bench at SF, starting at SG, and Starting at SF but he's had a ton of bad games too.  He's been just as streaky and inconsistent as the rest of the team.  I don't think moving him back to the 2 will make a difference, and I don't think Matthews can play SF.

As far as Batum's defense is concerned, KD showed what a real star with athleticism comparable to Batum should be able to do.  He blew past Batum multiple times like there was nobody there.  I don't think we should shuffle the lineup to try and create mismatches for Batum.  Batum needs to excel at both ends of the floor, particularly when the Blazers have been so accommodating to him all season long.

I like Mike and Mike and everything, but they are the worst Batum apologists in the city.  It's time to expect Batum to play hard nosed defense, and create/take/make shots on offense.  I'm tired of everybody blaming it on minutes, the guards, not starting etc. etc. etc.  When Peyton Manning got his rookie signing bonus, he was asked what he was going to do with it, and he replied "earn it".  That's how a winner thinks.  No more excuses.  Batum needs to get in that mindset as we move towards the off season.

They certainly dont look the same height. Batum plays bigger. Batum i think is a player that can play 1 thru 3. Wesley's handles are suspect. I wish he'd let his defense dictate his offense.

Batum hasn't been playing bad. He's just caught the Blazer "miss all your ouside shots" bug. He's at least hustling and trying to get to the rack. He's due for a big scoring night soon.

I agree there is a bug with the outside shots, but he and Aldridge need to get to the paint and get a shot or get a foul.  I am sick of their timidness in the paint.

When they are getting to the line the Blazers win, if they don't we lose.

How to solve the outside shot bug:    Confidence.

How to build confidence:      Drive to the hoop, shoot inside/higher % shots, play team ball. Get excited.

I'm betting if they shoot less jumpers and outside shots, they will miss less, and play better overall basketball, and the confidence instilled from playing well together has ALWAYS helped our outside shooters... any night that Batum or Wes or Jamal has gone off from behind the arc, they haven't been the only guy playin hard. We need to stop treating 3's and J's like it's the way to close gaps when we're behind. Putting that much pressure, even on a guy with the best touch, is not going to help him make shots.

A consistent penetrator would be nice. Id like to see Flynn atacking the basket as he did early in his career.

Like to see Aldridge do it like he did last season when Roy was out.

ALDRIDGE ALDRIDGE ALDRIDGE must be attacking the hoop attacking the hoop attacking the hoop! It's that big of a deal, if it takes repeating it again and again and again so help me I WILL DO IT!

Seriously, leave the outside jumpshots to the guards, and maybe SPARINGLY for yourself as a way to spread the D and make them guard you close from outside... because the point of that would be so you STOP TAKING JUMPSHOTS and move your shots closer to the basket!!! When we are in a close game, in the 3rd and 4th quarter, there should be no single defense in the NBA that is good enough to keep you more than 4 feet from the basket. If they swarm you and the ball is forced outside, that's why there are other players on the floor, the job of LaMarcus Aldridge is to take the highest percentage shots in the paint.

Take your game to the dayum frickackin RIM!!! TOUGHEN UP LAMARCUS! DO IT NOW!

This is what I am talking about.  Against the Gtizzlies, Matthews and Felton were constantly going to the paint.   Aldridge needs to start at the Low Post instead of taking the ball so far out.  Last year when Roy was out he was dominate going to the basket.  Lead darn it lead.

And not just Mathews and Felton in the Grizzlies game... I can't remember the opponent but in one of our wins recently (Chicago?) Mike Rice had that graphic up at halftime about Aldridge's shot selection (where it showed red dots for makes, black for misses), and I think it showed LaMarcus only missing 2 shots, both his farthest out from the basket. I called it right there that we'd leave with the W, and so it was.

Why have coaches not shown our players these patterns? It seems so evident that the majority of our offense is not going to come from a jumpshot-style, outside attack. We have young, athletic players, built for running and cutting, and several quick and maneuverable point guards. I would argue that there's a huge correlation between the games we win, and the games where we emphasize ball movement and inside shooting. I don't care whether it was under Nate or under Kaleb, the style of play for these Blazers is not an outside offense.

Better teamwork, more exciting to watch, and oh yeah, we win more often...

This is why an offensive mind like D'Antoni's is valuable. Made even moreso when you have a competent pg that can implement offensive strategies on the fly.Lets just hope that LaMarcus can woo his childhood buddy Deron Williams to take a little less money and join us in our Championship run.

    Deron/Beal/Nolan

    E.Will/Matthews

    Batum/Lamb
