Let me prefice this by saying my brother presented me with this idea and at first I said "heck no!" Now I'm not so sure. And before you call me crazy, watch the whole video and finish reading the post before you say ANYTHING! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxOzBEZG93I So with that part out of the way, lets considder. We need a backup PF that won't cost a lot of money, can block shots, and rebound. Now granted he has a history of drug abuse, BUT it appears that it is just that, HISTORY. His on the court antics, if you believe this interview, are just an act. It is a character he has created to make the game of basketball more fun for him. He is putting on a show, that isn't who he is, it's just who he is on the court. I guess the bigger question would be, "why not?" He's a high energy guy who plays great defense and rebounds the ball. He is a serious banger, and he will be pretty cheap to. So, would you want Portland to sign The Birdman as a Free Agent this summer?

    1. First off we already have L. Aldridge at the PF spot and TO will back him up.
    2. Second we have Greg Oden as a defensive shot blocker...we don't need more.
    3. Third...all though you say that childish display of sportsmanship is an act just put on for the court...If he were to come to the Blazers he would bring that joke of a performance with him and that alone will cause me to lose a lot of respect for blazers. We already got a team that clicks together why bring in a D-Bag that attempts to get all of the attention.

All in all i give it a big huge freakin NO! and a big finger to "birdman"

Hmm. well i will admit it was nice to see the other side of the "Birdman" the off court guy. Seems a little more normal now.. i dont personally like the on court guy as much sometimes. He tends to rub me the wrong way but you cant deny he does everything you really want in a backup PF. Rebound, block shots, high energy. So i mean i suppose it wouldnt be bad if we did sign him, i just dont think we would nor do i think Denver would give him up easily. Not to say we couldnt get him if we tried, i just doubt KP or anyone is looking that direction (obviously idk but thats my thought) also i personally would like to see what Jeff pendergraph can do in that back up spot. Hes a tougher banger type guy that plays hard all the time, i think he could fit well assuming hes given a chance to show it. Hes also a cheap pick up being a second round pick the only downside being that he would be a rookie and untested but idk im sure others have different opinions of what they are wanting.

That is exactly what I was talking about Ethan. 2 of your 3 points are completely invalid.

point 1: Birdman would be a back up PF to LA that is high energy, blocks shots, and rebounds. I like TO as a guy, but he does none of those things.

point 2: Greg Oden will most likely break into the starting spot this season moving Joel to the back up spot. Yes, Joel is a good shot blocker, but you seriously want to leave all the blocks to one person? That makes absolutely no sense. You can always use more people who can effect shots with their defense. It allows you to keep your Center out of a little thing called FOUL TROUBLE. Not to mention if you wanted to go to a smaller, quicker lineup Birdman can play Center while Aldrige stays at the PF.

point 3: Judging by his interview, I think part of who he has been on the court has to do with who he is playing with. I am not entirely convinced that he would be a more modified "birdman" here with this group of guys. Look at who he has as partners there: Carmello, Martin, Nene, Smith. Name a decent guy outside of Billups on that team. I think if he were here in Portland you might see another side of the Birdman.  Not saying anything is a sure thing, but might it be worth the experiment?

I got your back on this one rip city. At the end of the year, when they were talking about who was going to be a free agent, and birdman was mentioned, i had a vision of that second unit. Could you imagine the second units energy with him and rudy coming in? Damn, the rose garden roof would blow off. Between Rudy hitting threes and Birdman getting boards and catching alley-oops, it  would be awesome. And regardless of how he acts on the court, that guy plays with heart.  Its like if you look at baseball, K-Rod pumps his fists and yells and what not, but if you had the chance, wouldn't you want him on your team? If portland got the birdman, id be fine with it. The burst of energy and excitment is welcome in my book.

If the Blazers got the Bird-Man, they'd have t set aside extra cash, to pay off his drug rehab bill.

Just curious David, did you watch the video link? I think he is a bit of a follower. I think he is taking that bad boy role as far as he is because he is on a team of excentric personalities. I would bet that on a team of guys like this, he could do one of two things 1) become a media mess and get traded at mid season. Which I don't see happening because all the Denver people say is that he is a great lockerroom guy. 2) He learns to channel that energy and still be birdman but rather than be as much of an A.H. just be the crazy/funny dude in Portland that can ball out his backside. The Shaq/LeBron of the locker room, the prankster. I think he might surprise a lot of Portland people. We only got to see him 4 times this season? His energy in NO was different. His energy in Portland would be different. Would it be hard to get him away from Denver, maybe because Denver will want to offer him lots of money, but they don't have much capspace, and maybe Birdman sees that in Denver he is surrounded by guys who actually get in the way of the direction he wants to take his life and in Portland he might actually be able to be himself. He wants acceptance and being eccentric is how he got it in Denver. He's a survivor, if I had gone through all that, I would be starved for acceptence too.
