With the trade deadline fast approaching and all the talk about this player for that player and on and on, I haven't read much on what the purpose of said player is to the team's philosophy, i.e. How does so and so fit into the system and philosophy of the team. Simply put, how do these Hypothetical new individuals add to what Nate is trying to create versus what we already have. And even more basic, what type of team is Nate trying to build? It just seems the whole needs to be thought through first before we start going after individuals with big names. There are many bad teams with a couple of good players and what wins playoff series's is good teams with good team philosophies.

So with that said, what type of team should we be building around our Core players?

We need more versatility. We could use a big guard/small forward. We look better witht the Pryz, but we could use some more big, muscle bound players. Fans like Craig Smith, but we need a better back to the basket player. We're losing too many rebounding battles, and it has resulted in a pile of losses.

Poor backcourt shooting, not grabbing boards, I'm suprised we still have a .500 record. I think the main reason why we are still at .500, is because of the hot start to this year. That, and we don't have any bad players. We have good players that are playing like...(things found in a cat litter box)

Joels best game was his first one back. But for not playing basketball and being semi retired I am willing to cut him some slack. Camby had his best game yesterday in about 20 and possible the season . I am not sure in the direction we need to go.A dominate center would be nice but there are other issues at this point and time. I do not see us going for the ring this year no matter what we do. Now we do have a good core to build around with Batum and LA. Outside those 2 I do not see anyone outside our bigs that are untouchable I think EW with more playing time will be better than Matthews But Matthews has more value at this time. We deffinately have trade material to do something even if it is to get draft picks

I think that if the team does trade, and we recieve a PG, our team will conform to the PG style of play.. Just like when Felton came in at PG, we conformed to playing crappy (it just took a few games to adjust to it).
Say we bring in Rondo some how and retain Batum/wallace/both, as well as LA and Camby. That is a defensive team that can penetrate to get easy buckets. *The draw back to this squad is it isn't very good at shooting from outside, and the lanes will eventually get clogged. I say if we could get Rondo, we would have to move wallace for a better outside shooter/picks/a good big.
Now for Nash, and say we still retain roughly the same people stated above^, we would have a good spread of talent on the floor. Nash and batum can shoot from outside, while nash, wallace, and LA can create their own shot as well. Batum can take over defensive responsiblities for nash when it comes to guarding the great PGs of the league. Overall, this team is well spread on both sides of the court, has a good bench, and has a good chance to make some noise.. The ONLY draw back is Nash is old and this well balanced team will only last for a couple seasons if that. Nash could leave in free agency next year, retire, or get injured like so many other blazers do.
Another option for the team, is to blow up the team and dump contracts keep a few of the main building pieces like LA, Batum, Crawford (if we can), EW, Pryz, and maybe some of the old guys like Kurt and camby. Then go out there and try to pick up some talent either in FA, or try to pry a player away from a team that has a big contract because the luxury tax is coming up next year. Examples of players with big contracts that might not be with their team in the next year or so (and could make it to ours) are.. any of the big three of atlanta, pierce or rondo, iguodala, nene, ellis or d. lee, mo williams, pau gasol (doubt it+ don't want a laker), randolph/gasol or gay, okafor, cousins (not a big contract but still might move), t. parker, d. harris or one of the jazz bigs. I know not all of the players are truely avaliable, but with the luxury tax coming up.. you never know with owners wanting to shed big salaries. I just hope which ever way we go, our team gets better and gets past our days of being mediocre!

Would everyone stop with the Rondo and Nash talk! First off, they would probably not sign with us. Second off, do we really think they would be the answer? Nash is 38 years old and Rondo can't shoot worth crap. Who would they be passing to? Batum would be the only consistent shooter and even then its a stretch!

rondo is not a good shooter but you cant argue with his numbers. rondo can get to the rim and finish or kick out and thats a huge improvement from what they have now. not that im buying into boston trading rondo because i dont think they will unless they get an offer they cant pass up

Seriously, so many of you are a little detached from reality regarding Batum.  He's shooting .462 on the season.  BELOW his career average despite his increased minutes.  For reference, the much maligned Gerald Wallace is shooting .482.  HIGHER than his career average despite having a completely jacked hand.  I'm not trying to make another Batum vs. Wallace argument here, but I am saying that Batum, while a great player and an important part of the team, is not an all-star caliber player and is definitely on the table for any and all trades that bring a top level big or a PG to this team.

You are right, there are no great shooters on this team.  What I can't understand though is how Batum fans blame his shooting percentage on him not getting good looks or being pressured by the clock etc., but when people talk about trading for an all-star PG it's suddenly a terrible idea.  You can't have it both ways.

Batum should be on the table for the same reason Rondo is.  Because he is our best bargaining chip.  This is an obvious trade for the Blazers and I hope they make it happen because Batum or no Batum, we are going NOWHERE until we get somebody who can run the offense.

I think this post was about the philosophy we employ and then build around, for example do we want to be a defensive team, a low post team, a jump shooting team, a fast paced team, you get the idea. I understand players can decide the way a team plays and hence the talk of individuals being traded, but I think the philosophy behind the team is a more interesting topic than throwing around a wish list of players. So what direction do you think this team should go in?

the direction the team should go in depends on the players. a great coach should adapt the playing style to fit players individual strengths. the key is strategy. the frustrating part as a fan is watching the games and not being able to see exactly what they're trying to do. its more than just hitting and missing shots. i personally see no rhythm offensively. the blazers are too predictable. they either feed aldridge in the post or crawford shoots a jumper, and to his credit he makes it, but its much tougher when your opponent knows crawford is going to shoot. all they have to do is push lamarcus off the block and keep him faced away from the basket and keep a hand in jamal's face. this is not enough to win games because the opponent knows exactly what they're trying to do.

@the unholy, good points. I see the same two offensive schemes aswell and it was the same when Roy was here- extremely predictable, Roy was just awesome so it worked, but now it is not. I really think Nate is at fault here. I think we need to go in a new direction with our coach. These plyers just arent playing well in his system.

SOOO true! There is a reason why teams like the Nuggets, Phillie, Indie, Memphis, Houston, and Twolves have won more games than us with out a STACKED team. They have found a way to be less predictable, work hard, play D, and at the end of the night get more W's than us. Some of those teams have REALLY good coaches aswell. All I am saying, is our team has lost a lot. We have lost our identity, heart/drive, skill (apparently), direction, and on top of that we have lost too many games. Our players are better than this, and they deserve a better season. They need to find their game where ever they lost it, and if they never had game to begin with, then they need to steal it from someone else, cuz we can't have this season continue to be joke! WAKE UP BLAZERS!!
As a far as what direction to take, I think a combo of a defensive, lowpost team and slashing to the basket team. That way we keep their points low, and get high quality looks for our team+foul shots. That is just a good combo to win. It does depend on the personel we have too.

Kenny, by looking at past seasons, the blazers were most successful with the painfully slow half court offense because that is what Nate McMillan thrives on coaching. The 2008-09 season was an example of this as the blazers went 54-28. The starting lineup was Blake, Roy, Batum, Aldridge, and Pryzbilla. Now obviously we don't have Roy or Blake. But I think if we get back to that half court system rather than the running team they tried this year, we would be better off. Get a PG who doesn't look to score first but rather to set up his teammates and can pass very well to Aldridge and on the wings. Then look at signing a SG who can do even a fraction of what Roy did: handle the ball, pass, shoot in many different areas, be a decent driver. A realistic version of this? O.J. Mayo who is a free agent this summer. Not saying he's my first choice but he's the first that is realistic to signing and fits the mold. Long story short, go back to where we used to find success. Being a running team was a huge failure. Learn from that and go back to a more meticulous offense. Thoughts?

@JonThorpe I think you are right if we are thinking of keeping Nate as the coach. I think with Nate as the coach that would be the best way to win more games.

I like your thoughts, jon. And I think you're right on the money if Nate continues to coach. But if we move back to a half-court offense, then we MUST move Felton and Wallace out of here. I actually like Elliot Williams' half-court game, and I think he could be a great back-up 2-guard in that kind of system. Actually think the frantic tempo is the thing throwing off Crawford as well.

At that point, you have Felton, Wallace, and Matthews that you can shop to bring in a PG and/or a Center.

I guess Batum would be a good fit since Ilysavoa plays 4 more than the 3, which I didnt know lol

I think this would be a really good deal for Bucks then. They can draft Dieng with the 10 and maybe Franklin with their pick.
