The Portland Trail Blazers have agreed in principle to trade Gerald Wallace to the New Jersey Nets forMehmet Okur, Shawne Williams and a protected first-round pick, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Wallace, 29, is averaging 13.3 points and 6.6 rebounds this season.

The draft pick the Nets received is protected only through the top three spots.

RRogers- It means that if the Nets miss the playoffs and are in the draft lottery, that if they don't win the lottery or get one of the other top picks (2 or 3), that then Portland would own that pick for the year.

Scenario:
Nets finish with sixth worse record. They do not move up into the Top 3. Portland would then have the 6th overall pick in the draft.
If the Nets did move up into the Top 3, the pick would be theirs and we would receive their first-round pick in another upcoming draft.

liking how this starting to shape up, get another pick from lakers (dallases pick) and ridhour, have solid backup pg nxt yr, shawne williams decent backup sf next year, batum get more minutes now, and a top 10 pick this coming this yr, good expiring contracts in okur and camby and felton, have cap space to go after someone, also can resign batum, and we will have our own lottery pick hopefully

 so in the end, we get 2 top 10 picks, another 1st rd pick, solid backups, and cap room to make good moves, sounds really good to me

Well as much as I hate the idea of building around a mediocre (at best) Batum, I am resigned to him getting way too much money and getting yet another chance to play soft euro style ball in Portland.  Whatever.

In the balance, I'm glad the Blazers are committing to a genuine rebuild and making big moves during the off season.  This includes firing the coach and I hope bringing in a real GM + coach combo that are aligned on rebuilding this team.  Hopefully some FA see this is a legitimate place to play with a guy like LMA and can be convinced to come here and make a run.  Glad we didn't make a bunch of half cocked trades for more liabilities and short term solutions.  This season is pretty much over and all the pressure is on the front office to make the best of what has to be the biggest opportunity for the Blazers in a long long time.

I'm glad that people are excited to get some good picks but does no one remember our past abilities to draft? I was just fine with trading and taking this team in a different direction, yet is that really gonna happen through the draft? Will we be able to make a quality off-season move to make the shedding of salaries after this season worth while?

You are right on schwabbii.  Blazers past performance in the draft has been questionable.  Which is why we had better sign an elite GM with  a basketball pedigree to help us out.  We need to nail this offseason because with potentially 2 first round and 2 second round picks in the deepest draft in 10 years, screwing it up will be unacceptable.  

As far as FA goes, I heard we have 27 million dollars to play with if the Wallace and Camby trade go through.  That's a lot of money to attract some building blocks.

cmeese47 - I'm with you on that.  The organization looked at this road trip as make or break, and it broke.  I think by blowing up our already horrible defense and firing the coach, they have essentially conceded the season.

Batum's still a good defender, and Matthews has at least shown he can defend well. I'm interested to see how this 7-footer works in the rotation, he was picked pretty high in the draft, and has shown potential to be a great shot-blocker.

I'm just looking forward to Felton being out the equation.

I think with Matthews they figure that he's still a really young player, so his terrible run as of late is more permissible. From what Mike and Mike were saying, age was an issue. Not only to bring in young, players "of the future", but also to remove some conflicting voices/opinions between certain players and the coaches.
