five most interesting stories, rumors and notes in the NBA:

    1. You bet, Patty: In some parts of the world, you can bet on pretty much anything there's interest in. Take Australia. There, the website is taking action on which team Patty Mills will play for next. The Blazers are paying $8, with "Any European Team" the favorite at $4.

Mills, who had been under contract with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association, has gotten his letter of clearance from FIBA, allowing him to return to the NBA. But there's a catch, which Mills spelled out on via Twitter:
"So it seems with the New Collective Bargaining agreement in my situation, no matter what happens, Portland still has all the control

"So Portland still retains my rights, therefore the only options are to sign me (but roster is full), release me and my rights or...

"... they could hold my rights for the remainder of the season without being on a roster."
All of which is true. Here's how this works: Last June, just before the lockout, the Blazers extended a qualifying offer to Mills, making him a restricted free agent. However, the deadline for another team to sign an offer sheet on Mills (or any other restricted free agent) was Thursday.

Mills announced Wednesday that he got his clearance letter, leaving a day for teams to extend an offer sheet. None did.

That makes Mills the Blazers' property for the rest of the season, so for him to sign with another team, they would have to renounce their rights to him.

Two other players who played in China are in a similar situation after Thursday's deadline passed. Wilson Chandler is stuck with the Nuggets unless they choose to release him (no chance in hell). The Denver Post's Benjamin Hochman reports a sticking point: Denver only wants to sign Chandler to a long-term deal because if he only signs for the rest of this season, he would become an unrestricted free agent at the end of it.

Also, former University of Oregon point guard Aaron Brooks is similarly tied to the Suns, but his Guangdong team is still in the playoffs and could remain so late into this month. Valley of the Suns' Michael Schwartz writes that Phoenix might be better off not signing Brooks for this season.

Indeed, if Mills, Chandler or Brooks do not play in the NBA this season, they would revert to being restricted free agents for their teams going into next season, starting the whole process all over again.

Can't they put Oden in the D-League and bring back Mills?

That would be nice. He definitely can't make us any worse and we know he would give us some great energy that seems to be lacking somedays. Some days everyone seems so lifeless. Patty was always excited and energetic and I think would give us a great boost! I say we bring him back!!

As frustrated as I am with Felton, I would offer him up for a bag of Cheeto's and bring in Patty who was really showing great promise in the stretch of last season and into the playoffs. His energy and will to win is infectious!

With all the roster moves that Buchanan needs to focus on, let's just let the Patty thing sit for now. Even on the roster, he wouldn't play. The best he can hope for is a place on the inactive list, which we just booted one of our PGs from. It's not like he's going to bring us any wins, just a smiling face on the bench. We need to think about helpful pieces, not garbage-time players.

Has anyone noticed that Felton is playing better lately?  Not to say that I wouldn't mind Patty being back.  He's a character and has skills that may land him a starting PG spot someday.  Dropping someone to the D-league won't make room on the roster.  We would have to cut someone altogether.  I would rather it be Thomas, Rhino, Johnson or Babbit.  Too many mediocre bigs now.

Felton knows his butt is in a sling and that is why he is playig better.  Funny thing is that getting a few spliters in your behind is enought to motivate any of these guys ego's.

Even if we dropped a player to the D-League, wouldn't he still be on our roster because of his contract? I don't think that would solve my problem. I talked to my sister about Patty and she said we would have to waive someone or make a trade to send two players to a team and get only one. That would make a roster spot for Patty. Personally I would love to see him back here.

I would love to see Patty and is shooting ability from the point back up a Rajon Rondo. So let's go get Rondo and create the roster spot.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
