Reggie Miller made a great comment last night (a first I know), when he commented that the expectations where High for the Heat when they made all of the changes during the off season, however it took them an entire season of playing and practicing together before they really turned it on.  They made no changes this past off season, versus the Blazers who made tons of changes and really have not had the time to practice together and come together as a team.

Maybe we are being too impatient

I agree that fans have been impatient.  I'm guilt of that, I've been part of the rumor mill talking trades as well.  But there are a couple things nagging at me that make me think this isn't just a question of time.

    1.  The Blazers came out looking so hot at the beginning of the season.  It seemed that the new squad had gelled and that the up-tempo offense was in place, despite the lack of practice due to the lockout.  Why did that all fall apart?  Were they just lucky for 9 games?  Something changed

    2.  The rumors may be just rumors, but I keep hearing that the players are unhappy.  I hear things like Wallace wants to leave, Felton is butt hurt about getting benched, etc. etc. etc.  And no question, the team is not playing with any fire.  You have to wonder if all the expiring contracts has the team resigned to the fact they are getting moved, and for whatever reason they are not fighting to keep this team together.  If the players are not invested in the plan, the coach, and each other it's going to be difficult, and perhaps ultimately not worth it, to sort it all out.

Let’s look at their first 12 games.

Seven were at home and three were on the road (of which they went 6-1 at Home and 1-2 on the road).

They started with Philly at home and won by 4, and then they played Sacramento & Denver and won.  They lose to the Clippers in LA and then beat OKC on the road (great win).  The next four home games they have with Lakers, Clippers & Cleveland they win and lose to the Magic at home and they also lost on the road to Phoenix (they got crushed).  Then starting with Orlando at home (mentioned above) they lost three straight.

So their record was 7-5 in their first twelve games and they were 4-4 against Top Teams. At homes they were 6-1 and on the road they were 1-4.  That’s when the red flags should have started.  Looking at the stats, they lost on turnovers and lousy field goal percentage and bad coaching decisions in the fourth quarter.

So why did they wait until almost mid-season to start making roster changes?

Nate did not want to change!

To answer your question I belive they were Lucky

Could they be unlucky through some of these losses then?  I have had this happen to teams that I've played on...we've seen it happen to other teams <last years Jazz>.  Sometimes a funk starts for whatever reason and it just spirals.  Usually there is some sort of subconcious motivator...like the expiring contracts thing.  I don't think we're coming out of this soon.  I don't think we should purge the team either.  The under performers will do better than they are.  Let's not let it be elsewhere.

BTW...it's hard to compare to the Heat as they made a finals appearance last year...but I get what you're saying.

Yeah, well the Heat also were in the finals last year, as of right now Portland won't even be in the playoffs.
They are not unlucky, they are lazy.

We could possibly take McCollum with the 10th pick and trade him to the kings for Marcus Thornton. I would personally prefer if we kept McCollum because he can give us scoring off the bench and he will bring that maturity of having been in college...

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.

Special K, aren''t you a cereal? And yes, Batum is expensive, but I think he''s worth it. Why would you take someone who isn''t is as good, just for less money. Then why don''t we take the worst possible player and pay him the least possible amoun...
