Trail Blazers (18-16) At Nuggets (18-17)

The first game of the second-half of the season has the Trail Blazers in Denver, taking on the Nuggets for the third and final time this season. Although the Nuggets have struggled since opening the season at 14-5 (currently 18-17 and losers of 12 of their last 16 games), the Pepsi Center is the ultimate House of Horrors for the Trail Blazers. Since the 2003-04 season, Portland has just ONE win in 16 tries which came back in the 2007-08 season during the 13-game winning streak. Denver is without cornerstone small forward, Danilo Gallinari who is out indefinitely with a sprained left ankle. To make matters worse for the Nuggets, Nene is questionable with a strained left calf, Ty Lawson is probable with a sprained left ankle and Rudy Fernandez is probable with a strained lower back. All three were inactive in their last game before the All-Star Break, a 114-99 loss at home to the Spurs.

Rounds One and Two went to the Trail Blazers who took both contests at the Rose Garden, a 111-102 victory back on December 29 and a 117-97 blowout earlier this month. In both games, it was an anomaly that helped pushed Portland past Denver. During the first matchup, Ray Felton had 23 points, on 10-16 shooting, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. And who can forget Nicolas Batum's career-high 33 points on a staggering 9 threes? Also, let's not forget this most recent win came against a Nugget squad playing their third game in three nights.

I wouldn't bank on felton giving you those type of numbers again or Batum hitting 9 more trifectas and Denver definitely won't be as exhausted as they were the last time around, so just how can Portland close out February with a bang? Run. Run. Run. Will the turnovers follow? Most likely, but the Trail Blazers still managed to beat Denver the first time by committing 25 turnovers. This Trail Blazers squad is just built to run. Along with pushing the tempo, Portland needs to be aggressive for a full 48 minutes. Too many times this year has Portland failed to show up until the second-half of games, especially on the road. And 24 minutes of hoop won't cut it playing in the Mile-High altitude. And finally, sharing is caring. Normally when the Blazers have a lot of their baskets assisted, it means the offense is moving well in the half-court and everyone is getting involved, making it hard for a cold-streak to stifle them.

If Lawson and Nene are back in the line-up, this will be a challenge.  Those 2 are worth a good 20-30 points in the paint a night.  If they aren't back, perimeter defense will be the key.  Either way, this will be the first true test of the new line up if we stick with Crawford and Batum starting 1-2, and I hope we do.

well at half time i can say looks like we didnt do anything with our time off, going to keep playing 24minutes of basketball a game and let teams put us away by half time. they all look like they took their time off and drank too much champagne and ate cake. pathetic. we need the thrylla NOW.

    Post-Game Quotes:
George Karl on Portland being good at home, struggling on the road-
“I still think it’s the nature of most NBA teams is there is a progression of good teams win at home and on the road. Team’s that are trying to become good win at home and at times try and figure out how to win on the road. There are the exceptions like us, Minnesota in that we both win some and lose some. I just think there are very few teams who dominate at home and dominate on the road. If you win 50 percent of your road games you’ve done a good job and if you win 75 percent of your home games then you’ve done a great job.”
LaMarcus Aldridge on where the team is at right now-
“We’re still searching it looks like. We’re not being consistent; we’re still trying to find a way to have guys bring it every night. I don’t think we’ve put together two or three games where everyone has shot the ball well. We always have one or two guys play decent and the rest of the guys kind of just fall in line. We haven’t put together a good rhythm where everyone is playing well every game. It’s hard to win when guys are missing shots, guys don’t have it on the offensive end and they play on the defensive it. We’re all pros and we shouldn’t do that but it’s a natural part of just focusing on your offense more and you kind of don’t take defense that seriously. We got back in the game tonight once we started playing hard and start playing together we just didn’t have enough to finish it.”
    Coach McMillan on overall effort-
“We just got outworked. That team came out and right from the start outworked us and pounded us on the boards, pounded us in the paint and wanted it more. Mentally, we got to get stronger on the road playing games like this and playing through situation like this.”

I really don't know what to say. Same story, different venue. Whether we are playing at Denver or in Detroit, this team just doesn't bring the effort, intensity or desire with them on the road. We are 35 deep into the season already and if this hasn't changed by now, when will it?

My theory is the team lacks a leader. Everything is fine at home because they get charged up by the fans, but on the road, Brandon isn't there to calm them down and lead the team through adversity. I've said this for a while now, but our March schedule is BRUTAL. We needed this win against Denver without Nene and Gallo, now we've got Miami, Minnesota, and New Orleans at home before the most difficult seven-game road trip I've seen in recent memory.

I was truly hoping for a win, with the horrible success at the Pesi center I figured the odds were in our favor, plus two of their top players out of tonights line-up. I hope they can shake it off, as it just gets very difficult moving forward in March. Can't wait to welcome back Pryz at the Garden at tomorrow nights game however!

yep, we lack a leader. lamarcus is a great guy and a great role model but he doesn't get in anyones face. i'm hoping the thrylla will be this guy, but it may be hard coming in half way through the season. everyone says we need an all star point guard, but i feel we are good enough to win we just need a role player with a voice.

Let me help you out Dustin...Nate has lost this team, period.  Coaches that lose their teams lose their jobs.  The one thing Nate has consistently brought to the table every season, regardless of depletions in roster, has been effort from his players.  Blazer teams under Nate, with or without Brandon, have ALWAYS been overachieving teams...until now.

I bet Jerome Kersey cringes, every time these Blazers have wide open lanes to the basket, and they settle for the long jumper instead.

sign Iggy for 8-9M, Batum at the two, and Wesley off the bench! Draft Steven Adams (who loves contact, grew up playing rug-bee). Sounds NICE!

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
