    Who Should Have Been Waived?
    Armon Johnson (9)
     75%
    Greg Oden (3)
     25%

No, the question isn't, "Should we have kept Armon Johnson instead of signing Joel Przybilla?" That's a no-brainer. If Joel wants to come back, you make room for him. Bottom line. End of story.  Rather, who should have been waived, Oden or Johnson, that is the question.

Both players are unrestricted free agents after the season is over, so there is no advantage either way. While it's true that Armon was the third point guard on the roster and only suited up when another player was inactive, he was a healthy, live body. So not only do you lose out on another ball-handler if Ray or Nolan go down, but it takes away another point guard in practice.

The one upside to keeping Oden is now he will still be able to rehab at our facilities. But, with his surgery being so fresh, I'm not sure how much actual rehabilitation time he'll get before the season is up. Because once the season is over, Oden is no longer a member of the Trail Blazers unless he is re-signed.

So Rip City, who should have been waived, Greg Oden or Armon Johnson?

No Question Armon is a one trick pony I mean he could explode with someone else but, I take my chances with him doing that instead of Oden.

He's not that great.  Has no trade value. Even Greg has some intrinsic trade value.

So we keep injured Oden who has not done us any good in some time... sucks that he is hurt but he isnt helping the team. We pick up Joel...who has had time in the past on the injured list. And we get rid of a healthy, young kid that always seems to have a positive attitude that hasnt really gotten a fair shot to prove himself... sorry AJ not everyone feels you should be cast out! Good luck Armon...maybe we can get ya back in the future!

On principle, it has to be Armon that goes. He actually had the same value as Oden on the IL, but if you have to waive someone and it's between a number one overall draft pick and AJ, injury isn't even a factor. You could tell the franchise was just waiting for his contract to expire. And if that doesn't convince you, here's an injured player in Oden, doing his best to be a rehab warrior and get healthy again. On the other hand here's Armon, who had an extended summer working out with fellow NBA players (or so the rumor went). However, he came back from the lockout with zero, count 'em, zero new moves and virtually no improvement on his right hand. I was actually disappointed in him and Luke Babbit for doing nothing to expand their game; did they just expect to be handed extra minutes as second-year players?

Anyway, I digress. The point remains that Greg absolutely wants to play in the NBA, and I'm not convinced Armon really does.

BOOM, DPicks! Aside from the injury factor, people have to realize that point guards (even ones with playable skills, unlike Armon) are a dime a dozen, but a center like Oden is closer to 1 in a million. The only way that Armon was going to have any chance at all to play as a Blazer was to improve his game between seasons, and from what I've seen he's made no changes.

Babbitt is lucky to barely get garbage minutes, because even among our youth and rookies he's just not able to keep up the pace. If we had another player that could play a consistent and basic power forward behind LaMarcus (no offense to Craig, he's great on the team but certainly not a conventional pf), Luke would be the next guy we'd say goodbye to. And unlike Armon, Babbitt has at least made minor improvements to his play on the NBA floor, but I just don't think it's enough. It's important to remember that almost every player on every team in the NBA was considered the best of the best before they got to where they are. Luke and Armon may have played well in college, but every team they play against now is a team built not of students but of award-winning athletes. If they want to compete above the D-League their skills need to jump to the next level.

Case and point: Elliot Williams. This dude just sat the whole last season after surgery, but I guarantee you he didn't waste time. He sharpened skills and kept working, and it shows.

I agree 100%.  Contractually speaking and coming from a business standpoint, GO has far more value.

Additionally, for all of you young players out there...as much as I loved AJ's personality and charisma, his enthusiasm, his physical strength and aggressiveness, the young man was only strong with his left.  Develop BOTH hands

I read from John Hollinger (?) that if Armon is picked up off of waivers, Portland owes him no money. And if they released Greg, no team would have picked him up since he can't play for the rest of the season. Also it was mentioned by Jason Quick I believe that Oden makes more money, making it easier to stick him in a trade for salary purposes.
