Was this just what the Dr. ordered for Portland going into the All-Star Break?
Yes - Big home win, everyone played well, good momentum heading into a week off (9)

No - We still have the same problems and beat the Spurs without their 3 best players (1)

    Trail Blazers (17-16) v. Spurs (23-9)

It looked as if the Trail Blazers took off a little early for the All-Star break during that first-half in Los Angeles, even Nate McMillan said so post-game. Well, they can officially start thinking about home-cooked meals and white sandy beaches, but only AFTER playing 48 minutes of basketball at the Rose Garden. And there couldn't be a better opponent to take on then the red-hot San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are 23-9 on the season, won 11 straight games, including seven straight on their annual Rodeo Trip, and seem to be clicking on all cylinders at the moment.

We all know the Trail Blazers have a tendency to play to the level of their competition, and with the All-Star break less than 24 hours away, maybe a lesser opponent wouldn't attract their entire focus. But not only would it give Rip City a much-needed boost going into the second-half of the season by knocking off the hottest team in the League, Portland has some unfinished business to take care of. Back on January 13th, the Trail Blazers kicked off their six-game road trip in San Antonio. All was well, even holding a two-point lead early in the fourth quarter...before the wheels fell off. After scoring the first bucket of the fourth, the Spurs blitzed the Blazers, ending the period on a 34-16 run, to walk away with a 99-83 win. Even without Manu Ginobili, the Spurs rode their bench to the tune of a 45-17 advantage over their Pacific Northwest counterparts. And once again, as is always the story in Trail Blazer defeats, the Spurs took ownership of the boards, winning the rebounding battle, 50-36.

It will be the same cast of characters going at it tonight. Manu injured his rib in a win over the Clippers this past Saturday as will be out. The only change is Nicolas Batum has moved out of a reserve role and is now starting at shooting guard. It will be important for Batum or any other member of the Trail Blazer supporting cast to give LA some help. During the last meeting, Aldridge scored 29 but only three other Blazers scored in double-figures, but none shot over 50% and didn't register more than 13 points.

So the keys to getting this win tonight rest of the role players and bench. Portland simply can't allow the San Antonio bench free reign as they did in the first matchup. And it will take a monster night from Aldridge and at least one other Blazer to carry this team. One question: Who will play Robin to Aldridge's Batman tonight?

According to Jason Quick, the Trail Blazers will start Jamal Crawford at the point guard tonight over Ray Felton.

Oh bad.... oh bad bad bad bad bad. START NOLAN! Crawford at point hasn't worked ALL YEAR, and Nate's the only person watching Blazer basketball that hasn't figured that out yet. I bet that's what Jamal was tweeting about "Brandon Roy warned me that Nate would play me at the point and completely change my game, didn't listen to the advice..."

That clip has got me kinda excited which is saying a lot after the games recently. Hopefully the Blazers do play to their opponents level and we get a great game. They really should come out looking to make it up to the fans after that disgraceful 1st quarter against the Lakers.

As far as Jamal, he needs to stop complaining an prove he is a team player. Yes he is a star and former 6th man of the year, prove it by acting like one. Don't blame it all on being out of position, minutes, or whatever. Whining doesn't do anyone any good here. Make the best of it.

LMA & Nico Batum all the way! :)

Tony Parker is playing MVP basketball right now. The Rose Garden is gonna have to get loud. The golf clap library noise won't cut it tonight. We're gonna need 20,000 people yelling "Brick!" or "Miss it!" or my favorite, "Doot Chet!", everytime Parker goes to shoot the ball. Seriously now, let's do this Blazermania

It is great looking back at these memories as it sure sucks looking at the present state of affairs.  I just wish they would play Team Basketball, drive up the court fast and get into thier offense with 18 seconds left on shot clock and then play tough defense.  It is always nice to dream.  Too bad all we have is nightmares.

Very uncomfortable about starting Jamal at PG.

    There goes our bench scoring...

Wait so is Wes starting or Batum? I guess Nic will probably be our bench offense, hopefully with some young guns coming fully loaded... GO BLAZERS

Geez folks, relax. We are virtually at the same point we were last year. Give the team time to gel. You have to remember we have had more heartbreak and more changes then most of these other top teams and we still have a WINNING record. The state of the blazer fan is declining and I am ready to blog on it soon...too many "fair weather fans" and not the 'true" fans that stand behind the team. How anyone can call Nate a bad coach or even suggest firing him is crazy.! Look what he has had dealt to him and we have still made it farther then any fan/reporter/media source could predict!!! Geez...you guys want to trade "Crash" already and he hasn't even been with us a year.

I think if they do start JC tonight it would be a very good thing. We need a starting unit out there that can weather the storm of the better teams and not get us in a huge hole just after 1 quarter. Also this lineup (Batum, Aldridge, Wallace, Camby, Crawford) will give us more rebounding strength as well so we don't give up early second chance points. In any case, at least we will get a look at how it works. I like Felton and he is still learning as well. I like when he pushes the tempo and gets us running...after all, we ARE a young team for the most part and we should be running and not walking the ball up the court like the Celtics!!! Raymond just needs to learn how to control himself a little better and stay out of the timber with nowhere to pass.

Overall, I am excitied to see how the lineup works tonight...and win OR loss, I will always be a blazer fan and I support the group of players that we have now. To me, it is just a matter of time

    peace out,
    daddy

If Blazers score less than 20 in first quarter and/or less than 40 in first half, should starters be benched for remainder of game so they can get rested up and be ready after "All-Star" break?  I say yes.  Absolutely.

If starters are not ready to play then no point in having them on the floor and putting them at risk of injury for a game that won't be won anyway.  Nate should have benched them all after first quarter last night so they could be sure to get good and rested and ready to play tonight without any excuses.  No need to expend a bunch of energy on a lost cause game and end up risking the next game as well because of it.  Nate should consider a more pragmatic approach to game and player minutes management.  To for players to grow up and forget about who will get their feelings hurt.  What about the product being provided to the customer?

The more I think about it why not start Crawford hopefully it will fix our weakness which has been our Backcourt if all goes well I wouldn't be suprised if Batum and Crawford become one of the top ten scoring backcourt in the second half of the season I just hope the offense doesn't become stagnant.

I don't even think he's actually complaining about it; it's the fans that know basketball who are complaining (myself included). He's not a PG, plain and simple. He can handle, he can score, and he can kinda pass. But he's clearly uncomfortable when he's not playing a wing position, whether or not he complains about it. Maybe the problem is that Nate was a point, and he wants to make any great player into a point so that he can live vicariously through them or something. Lord only knows.

On the positive side. It's a different line-up so... good. Also Nate says Nic will be guarding Tony Parker. I like that. Nobody in the NBA knows Parker better than Nic Batum, and that bodes well for the matchup.

Now, Nic, LA, and Jamal, play your asses off! In fact, I'm turning the slogan around: the fans are ready to rise; RISE WITH US, BLAZERS!

Can't read too much into this win since G. didn't play P&D.  Especially can't read much into the margin.

Gets recorded as a W.  But meaning is not significant.  Anything other than a blowout though could have been an indicator game.

Enjoy the break.  Good luck to LA at All-Star game.

There have been a ton of games that good players were sat and we still struggled.  Although not as significant as it would be if Duncan and Parker were playing, it shows E-Will can play, and deserves time in the rotation (at least to me).  This was a great confidence boost after that terrible game in LA and I am glad we took advantage, something we have had trouble doing.

OMG Nate finally grew a set and parked Felton where he belongs, warming the bench, amazing how much differance it made in his game. Awesome job by Crawford I dont think any Blazer fan could ask for more. Now lets see this continue after the Break. They should get rid of the all star game all together its starting to become a dog and pony show with the crap dunk contest that is predetermined like with Blake last year. That was the cheapest win of a dunk contest I have ever seen, oh well wont even be watching it this year hope you all enjoy it anyway.

If for nothing else, this win leaves a good taste for eight days. I couldn't have imagined losing two straight going into this break. EVERYONE saw the floor and everyone had a good night. I'm still apprehensive about the long-term outlook of this season, but at least on this night, it was a great night to be in the Rose Garden.

Even if Parker and Duncan had played tonight, I think the Blazers were locked in enough on what they wanted to do that there was no stopping them :) to top that off with the highest score in the NBA so far this season, AND a 40 point dominance over what had been the hottest NBA team going in to the allstar break, AND where at least 5 of our players were in double digits... this was the kind of game that all of us, players as well as fans, needed dearly.

It was redemption for last night in Los Angeles, but more than that, it showed that this squad is indeed capable of that chemistry-based team-ball that can be such a rare and perfect combination. Tonight was redemption for some of our recent games, where that concept of a winning team that wasn't based on star-power started to seem like a small-market promotional myth.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Blazers, for putting that all together. Get rest during the allstar break, and show support for LTrain while he represents Rip City, but most importantly...

PRACTICE YOUR A$$*$ OFF, so that this kind of chemistry and teamwork is AUTOMATIC and second nature!!! Come back with a collective subconscious among the team, so that you can play games in the 2nd half of the season CONSISTENTLY like the game you played tonight... we don't really neeeed 40 point leads, or 137 points, in a game. But we do NEEEEEED to see some consistent and repetitive play, such as...
5 players in double digit scoring,
unselfish ball movement leading to open shots,
high assists from multiple players in multiple types of play,
    VERY low turnovers,
    high speed basketball,
    rebounding on both ends,
    fast breaks,
    taking it to the rim,
    players hitting free throws,
    players hitting 3's,
a deep rotation where Coach can rest starters and not worry about the lead,
and walking away with the W.

...have anything to add to the list of what we saw tonight vs the Spurs that we'd lacked in so many other games so far this season?

good win. im still skeptical as we've been doing this all season. if we open up the season with 10games where we play consistent team ball like this game then i'll begin to get over confident for a playoff run again. i really hope we do make playoffs as i cant afford to make a game till post season.

Felton's performance must have been a negative response to pressure at this point. He posted better numbers (except assists) coming off the bench. That means it's not a matter of denying him playing time or "punishing" him. He just doesn't have a starter's mentality. I'm not sure if that's better or worse for the blazers' future. And I'm still not sold on Crawford starting at point; 1 good game doesn't mean he's a better starting PG. We'll see what happens and if the Blazers have to do something to bring in a starting point who can handle the pressure... but hopefully it all gets worked out moving forward.
