Have We Seen The Last Of Greg Oden In Portland?
Yes - Unfortunately, his body just doesn't want to corporate (8)

No - No, he's still just 24 years old & other players have overcame this before (11)
     58%

December 5th, 2009. This was the last time we've seen Greg Oden in a Trail Blazers uniform on the hardwood. For those counting, it has been 807 days and counting since Greg fractured his patella against the Houston Rockets, derailing an All-Star first month of the season for the former No. 1 overall pick. Since being drafted in the summer of 2007, Greg has had microfracture surgeries on both knees, surgery to repair a fractured left kneecap, and two knee debris removals this month. That's not even counting the ankle injury suffered on Opening Night in Los Angeles, sidelining him for two weeks as well as the chipped knee cap he suffered when his knee collided with Corey Maggette's which shelved him for three weeks right before the All-Star break of 2009 which had him slated to perform in the Rookie/Sophomore game.

82 games. That's the combined total of games Oden has played in the red, black, and white. This would have been his fifth NBA season and if we tallied every regular season game from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2012, there would be a maximum of 394 games possible to be played. Greg's played in just 20.8% of games. But what's more concerning is that all three setbacks have occurred off the court. Oden isn't even playing basketball yet his body just continues to fight him on this. Bad luck? Brittle bones? Call it whatever you want (most likely a combination of both), but the bottom line is Oden, the once-in-a-generation center, is out again, this time for at least another 12 months.

There is hope for all of the eternal optimists out there though. Grant Hill had a stretch of five seasons (similar to Oden) where his ankle just refused to heal properly. He missed a total of 275 games. All hope was lost. But then, he went to Phoenix and had a re-birth. He has only missed 30 combined games since the 2006-07 season and has only missed one game, ONE GAME, since 2008.

Then there was Big Z, Zydrunas Ilguaskas who played in just 29 games from 98-01, even missing th entire 99-00 season with re-occurring foot problems. Since 01, Big Z  has played in an average of 72.3 games. That's 10 seasons. No flash in the pan there. So if both Z and Hill can do it, why not Greg?

He's a unrestricted free agent this year. What would you do? Roll the dice and sign him to a cheap, short contract and hold out hope he can regain health in his knees and return to the All-Star center we saw in 2009? Or, if no other team has signed him, do you wait until he's fully healthy before offering a deal? Then there's option number three. An option no Blazer fan really wants to think about. Cutting the cord. Do you just say 'Thanks for everything Greg. It just didn't work out.'?

So Rip City, have we seen the last of Greg Oden in Portland?

Unless we get a new training staff then yeah it's time to move on because the Big 3 Era for this team is over It a new era now with this team and he had so many surgerys on both his legs even if he does come back I don't think he can hold up for the long haul and plus we are wasting a roster spot we could use his spot to get someone that can help this team I admit I hope he does come back from this but, It's going to take nothing short of a miricle and with our history they are few and far between.

No way, he'll be back. He's too good of a player to write off. He just needs a little better luck, and some hugs. This is some really tough surgery Greg is dealing with. And hey, I don't mind waiting a bit longer, because I'm stickin' by my Blazer team for the long hall.

Unfortunately, he could be the answer to Portland's front-court woes. I don't think anyone denies that we need a COTF... that was going to be Greg, and it should be Greg. But if the future is 2 seasons from now... well, that COTF HAS to be someone else. Which is a pretty lousy situation no matter how you look at it. I guarantee that if we get a new Center moving forward, Greg will end up shutting that guy down in the post after signing with another team, and that will be hard to watch.

Jackie Stiles had 13 surgeries playing in the WNBA for the Portland Fire. But she never gave up, she always tried her best to get back to what she loves, basketball. Oden wouldn't be going through all this if he didn't want to contribute to the Blazers. Keep your chin up Greg, it's not like the Blazers are going anywhere. We'll be in Portland for a long time.

I have to agree with this, but also have to add how mentally tough rehab is, and then have to listen to the sports show guys take shots at him like the spin doctor Canzano, who is nothing more than a d-league player at best in the sports world anyway!

There are still so few players out there with his potential, he's gotta be worth thinking about holding out for.

Add to that the fact that he's taking up relatively little space towards our cap, and that he's so young still, and his surgical procedures have been far more advanced than even a decade ago when it likely meant doom for an athlete, and the amount of time and money we've invested in him already with little to no return...

...why WOULDN'T we hold out as long as possible? Even if he comes back for 1 full season, a few seasons from now, it'll be later than we all would've liked but it would STILL be a huge benefit to our team.

sign him for the minimum and help him rehab. if we need to fill a roster spot let armon johnson go since he doesnt play anyway.
i might read some canzano occasionally but you gotta know that it is what it is, that he's just trying to spark emotion and for some odd reason that's what he's paid to do even when its negative. personally i would like to read something positive and uplifting but hey, im not paying the guy so it doesn't bother me. hopefully greg isnt taking it too personal though.

Personally I would like to see if Greg could give us a season or 3. Some part of me thinks that he may just walk away and hang it up and walk without a cane when he is 40.

Makes sense, he just has too much upside compared to Armon. Seriously hope Greg can come back and play a bit down the line, not just for the Blazers but for himself.

Gotta say that the possible benefits still outway the risks.  What would crush us more than him never playing...is him coming back from all this and being an all-star for another team.  We cannot let that happen.  He stays here until it's a dead issue...and it's not quite dead yet.
