Trail Blazers (16-15) vs. Hawks (19-11)

The Trail Blazers have dropped four straight home games for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Obviously, the big question heading into Saturday's game against the Hawks is the status of LaMarcus Aldridge. Here's the latest from LA:

"If I go (Friday) and I feel great then I'm definitely going to play (Saturday)," said Aldridge. "I wanted to play (Thursday) but I don't want to re-injure it, then I'm out longer. That's my whole thing is coming back to quick then re-injuring it then being out longer."

Even with Aldridge in the lineup, the Hawks knocked off the Trail Blazers 92-89 on January 18.  During that contest, Portland got 22 from Crawford and 20 from Aldridge, but nothing much from anyone else. The deciding factor was once again our guard play or lack there of. Felton, Crawford, and Matthews shot a combined 13-44 from the floor -- that's only four less shots then the rest of the team attempted. The Trail Blazers must get better shot distribution thsi time around if they want to end their four-game skid at the Rose Garden.

Look for Nolan Smith to get some burn Saturday night. Back in Atlanta, it was a bench group led by Nolan at the point which scored 13 straight points to start the fourth quarter bringing the Blazers back from dead. His energy on defense caused a few turnovers and he even hit a timely three. With Felton's play at an all-time low and Crawford tired from logging an immense amount of minutes these past three games, it could be time for Nolan and his fresh legs to run the show.

    1 - 2 without Lamarcus, I'd say that wasn't half bad.

A day to regenerate will help the Blazers, and I expect the Hawks to get captured and released into the wild.

Hard to really choose a player of the game No one really STOOD out. LA was on fire early, but kind of faded away after his 4-4 start. Batum had a quiet 22. But he always seemed to make a backbreaking bucket and his baseline jam was memorable. Felton's first quarter was his best basketball since December but then it tapered off a bit. Nolan really set the tone defensively in the 2nd quarter and had a nice stint out there for the first time in a while. I would like to see him become a bit more aggressive and look for his shot, if for no other reason than keeping the defense honest.

I'll give it to Nic. A silent night doesn't necessarily mean a bad nigh. He was a quiet assassin tonight and he really seems to be coming into his own as a starter.

With a turnover in the first 60 seconds of play, I was settling into my seat for a long night! That only lasted seconds however, and hopefully the team is finding its way back on track, and go into the break on a winning note.  I would have to give the game to Nick with his all around solid play on the offensive, as well as the defensive boards.

agree w/ dhawes. nobody stood out. great team ball and i wanna give felton some credit because when he has a good game zers look unstoppable, at least tonight. tempo was controlled and the d forced atl out of rhythm offensively. also credit goes to the shooters who took it to the rim instead of just throwing up jumpers. i really like raymond driving and dishing. thats what he needs to do when his shot isnt falling. when the team is hitting their shots ray looks much better. i hope this is the start of something good. now is a good a time as any to get hot, (see dallas after all-star break last year).
also i saw something felton said about nate pulling him and throwing off his rhythm. i think if he keeps up the effort shown tonight he can earn coach's confidence back. let your play do the talking. anything less is just excuses.

I think Batum's all star potential is showing. Averaging above 20 points a game the last 5, getting a steal and a block every game. Shutting down players. Showing his hops. This game is his.

    Post-Game Quotes:

    Coach McMillan on Ray Felton-
“He did a good job. I thought he got to the tempo we wanted to play. We’ve dropped six games against Atlanta and I felt like part of it was we played their tempo. The games were in the 80’s and we needed to speed up the tempo tonight. He consistently pushed the ball down the floor, kept pressure on their defense. Of course he made some shots tonight, but he got us to the tempo that we wanted to play.”

“I liked the fact that he was aggressive. That is what we’;re looking for from him. We know he can do it. The attack was good and pushing the ball, keeping pressure. I thought he played free tonight. He looked pretty loose. It was good to see his shot fall and get some confidence there, hopefully he can continue from here.”

    Wesley Matthews on the win-
“We got the nice win, we finally played well in our building again. We just have to take this on the road and play against the Lakers.”
    LaMarcus Aldridge on the ankle-
"It felt good, a little bit sore in the beginning but I felt good.”
    McMillan on getting Aldridge back-
“That’s a guy who establishes the paint for us so it gives us another option. It was good to have him in the lineup to be able to play through him. But some other guys did some good things. I thought Nolan did a real nice job in his minutes off the bench tonight. Gerald defended as well as scored. Wesley knocked down some shots. So I thought it was a good team effort tonight.”

I agree. I think he, even more than LA, is the key to recovery after losing B-Roy. 22 points against Atlanta; the go-to guy when LaMarcus was out. LA is great, and has definitely done well in his leadership role, but he would have to put up about 40 ppg to completely make up for the loss of Brandon. I think the Nic and LaMarcus are going to become the dynamic duo of this team, and we better not see Nic coming off the bench again this season. I don't really care if he's at the 2 or the 3 (I prefer at the 2), but he clearly comes to play much better when he's in the starting line-up.
