Honest question. This is not a knee-jerk reaction after blowing an 18-point lead. This has been brewing for a long time coming. First, he's had his time to get something done here. The 2012 season marks his 7th season manning the ship and he's reached the playoffs in three of the six seasons, but has never got the team out of the first round. After winning 54 games in 2009, the win total has slowly decreased each of the past two years. His isolation offense is brutal to watch and without Brandon Roy to make it look good, we are going to continue to see second halves like the one we saw tonight.

I'll give credit where credit is due. He's a great coach at overachieving. When the chips are down, the Blazers under his guidance have found a way to fight, scrap, and claw into the playoffs. But when it comes down to X's & O's, there's a lot to be desired. Also, he doesn't develop or play our young talent at all. And it says something when out guys leave and flourish elsewhere. Channing is a new player in Phoenix. Don't you think we could use his 3 point shooting right about now? And even Rudy has had a re-birth in Denver!

But most of all, I'm tired of his stubbornness. He actually started Steve Blake over Andre Miller for half the season! And please, give the young players a chance and quick yanking them after the slightest of mistakes! If they play tight because of fear of making a turnover, they won't perform well.

Thanks for everything Nate (really), but it's time for a change.

If we miss the playoffs he should be gone, period! All his faults are magnified when the team is playing so bad. I agree with, pretty much, everything clydefrog has explained thats bad about Nate. Most of all I'm really bummed that Babbitt has been sitting when we need better outside shooting.

Well said.  He tends to use his so called "Top Talented" players to an extreme.  I am sorry but for this team playing 500 basketball almost half way thru the season, losing four in a row at the Rose Garden, I say clean the bench and bring in Terry Porter or Drexler to coach.  Something needs to be done now.  Something needs to be done to get these guys to grow a PAIR and have some PRIDE and humble themselves to quit expecting to win everytime they step on the court.  You have to earn a win.

Great post Clyde. I think what you wrote describes alot of our feelings about Nate exactly.

It's not that we hate Nate! I appreciate what he did to bring the franchise out of a rough patch. Like you said, he's managed to get our guys to scrape and claw their way into the playoffs the last few years when we were dealing with worst-case scenarios. But now he has a much stronger roster across the board, with great potential under the right training and motivation, and he can't give us anything better than he did with a decimated, injured roster. I've used the words 'gameplanning' and 'tactics' in other posts talking about what Nate is lacking; I give him credit for being a players' coach, and wouldn't mind using him as a defensive coach, but he never has nor ever will be a Tactitian on the floor. To make it to the next level, and ESPECIALLY if we ever hope to WIN a 7-game series, our Head Coach NEEDS to have a responsive, tactical, strategic approach to the game, when he's pre-planning and when he's on the floor. (In the same sense, I sincerely hope you were joking when you said bring in Porter or Drexler to coach. They'd both be similair to Nate in coaching style, and have way less experience)

The chess-part of the coaching game has evolved past the level that McMillan plays at. If he can wise up and learn some new moves, then I'll stick by him out of respect for what he's given us. But if Coach Nate can't learn to adapt to an unconventional season and a stronger roster, then he's hurting us more than he's helping us. I disagree that it's about whether or not we make the playoffs... if we don't get to the 2nd round this year, then we've drastically underperformed, period.

(oh, and truly doubt Babbitt would help our outside shooting lol.)

I've been reading posts on here for years and decided it was time to participate.

I'm actually a fan of Coach McMillan.  I truly believe the Blazers struggles are a direct result of the PG play (not the SG play).  I know Wes has struggled with his shot but I also feel he's had more pressure on him this season since our PG's don't pose much of a scoring threat.  I miss Andre Miller.  If the Blazers had a chance, I'd try and get him back (I know this won't happen).  Raymond Felton is not a bad player.  He works hard.  I just feel he is a good back-up.  I know the Blazers management was thinking youth/speed when the trade went down before the season.  The problem is, Felton doesn't have the dribbling skills or smarts that Andre did/does.  Not sure what the Blazers would need to give up but I would consider calling Phoenix about Nash.  They need someone else other than Jamal who can create their own shot (miss you BRoy).  I heard someone mention Aaron Brooks but I'm not sure about his availability.  The bottom-line is I think the Blazers have to make a trade.  I heard someone say they should trade Marcus Camby.  I really hope that doesn't happen.  The younger players coming up don't have the ability to do what he does.

@ Blazer247 - Why wouldn't Babbitt help our outside shooting? If he can't get time on the floor how can you doubt? What informs your doubt?  I'm not saying he's the savior for our shooting woes, my point is that he really hasn't been given the chance to gain confidence and that goes along with the main theme in this post - nate not playing young players. I would just hate to see us give up on another player who then goes to another team and does well, this has happened time and time again with the blazers (and other teams).

I actually agree with the Babbitt idea! I know he isn't exactly the most reliable player of the bench so far, but I think it's just because he knows that he has to make all of his shots in order for Nate to leave him on the court. Who wouldn't be nervous putting up shots if that were the case? It's been said many a times that he is the best shooter on the team and I see him all the time at shoot around draining threes like its nothing. Would it really hurt us to play him 10 minutes here or there?

A great win tonight but it lost its luster due to Nate's stubbornness. Why does he have all 5 starters in the game halfway through the fourth quarter with a 22 point lead? We are in the midst of a 6 game in 8 night stretch and yet Coach continued to wear our rotational players down. Does he really not trust Elliot, Rhino, and CJ to protect a 20+ point lead with 6 minutes to play? Its just maddening.

@wanting to improve the team by using Babbitt more...

Clyde's post right above this is a perfect example of why Babbitt is not the answer among our young players; when he mentions youth, he mentions the ones that have worthwhile production potential, and that's Elliot Williams, Craig Smith, Nolan Smith (but he's getting more playtime now), and Chris Johnson.
Luke and Armon are not thought of by most fans on that list because their upside, even when they've played, has been horrible. On our roster currently, the players with the LOWEST potential use if we put them on the floor RIGHT NOW are: Greg Oden, Armon Johnson, and Luke Babbitt. Greg is obviously the least likely to help us and Luke is the most likely among those 3, but that still puts him at rock bottom on our roster.

If Nate is going to use a longer rotation, or even just use the youth as improv backups on a case-by-case basis, the first guys that he will logically turn to are Nolan, Elliot, and Craig, and then Chris for defensive situations. That gives us a pretty long rotation, so the only times I see Luke getting minutes is in complete garbage time, or when we absolutely need some height. He's just not ready...

Love Nate and always have...however, moving forward I do not  believe his management style best suits a rebuilding team.  I doubt Nate himself will want to remain at the healm given the direction this team is now headed.

Actually, given Nate's history here, I'd say a rebuilding team is EXACTLY what suits him; he is excellent at getting a weak roster farther than expected.

The problem at hand, however, is we finally have a roster with legitimate potential to do well when coached properly, and there's doubt as to whether or not Coach McMillan can adjust his old-school/traditional style to be something that can help push this team past the same first-round-exit.

Felton needs to go...enough said. Nate is doing fine. The big question is...who would replace Nate? Expecting some Phill Jackson like coach to appear out of no where?
