Even in defeat, are the road woes solved?

5:30 PM | American Airlines Arena | Dallas, TX
    Trail Blazers (15-12) @ Mavericks (16-11)

The Trail Blazers quick two-game roadie away from the Rose City takes them to Dallas where they will do battle in Big D for the first time since being eliminated from the playoffs last May. Portland looked shaky to say the least in their 94-86 victory in New Orleans and will have to play with much more desperation and desire if they are to string together a couple of road victories in a row. Separated by only one game in the standings, Dallas is 16-11 on the season and owners of a decent 9-5 home record. Speaking of the American Airlines Center, it hasn't been a friendly venue for Rip City since Dirk arrived in Dallas. The Trail Blazers are an abysmal 4-22 in Dallas since the 2002 season,( playoffs included) and losers of five straight.

Luckily for Portland, they just might have beaten the Mavs back to Texas this evening as Dallas played (and defeated) the Timberwolves in Minnesota while the Trail Blazers had the much shorter New Orleans-to-Dallas flight. So fatigue should not be an advantage or disadvantage for either squad. In their 104-97 win over the Wolves, Dirk played in All-Star form, scoring 33 points on 11-19 shooting from the floor. Giving Dallas an extra boost was the return of Jason Kidd who had missed the previous seven games with a left calf muscle strain. In his first game back, Kidd was in vintage form, scoring 8 points, handing out 10 helpers, grabbing 5 rebounds, and forcing two steals. Also of note is the fact the Mavericks reached the century mark for the ninth time all season and are a nearly unbeatable 8-1 when doing so.

To win the game, the Blazers need to play defense. Bottom line. Not only must they hold Dallas under 100 as Portland has not defeated a team on the road this year when allowing as many points but they need to get assertive and rebound. The Hornets without Carl Landry, Chris Kaman, and Jason Smith had their way under the boards with the Trail Blazers. If our guards and forwards don't help Marcus Camby out, it's going to be a long night. Along with rebounding and defense, Portland must get Crash involved. He was back to his old-self tonight on the road, shooting 6-9 from the field and swatting anything and everything. The floor opened up for LA in the fourth when Gerald took his man on the blocks and backed him down. The key matchup to watch will be Wallace v. Marion. Can Gerald back him down? And can he stop The Matrix from scoring? It seemed like whenever Dallas played well in the postseason last year, Marion always played an integral role.

We look like a high school team in crunch time. I'm angry, disappointed, and depressed. I doubt we make the playoffs this year. But hey... maybe this pathetic failure of a season will spark people into making changes like exchanging some players and staff for the better.

we need a new starting line up in the back court i start nolan over felton EW over wesley and batum over wallace until those boys decide to put in effort in the first half. if we play hard for 48minutes we win this game with no overtimes. i hope this gives nate a lesson as well we need to play some more bench in case a game goes to 2 overtimes you aren't relying on the same 6guys to put in all the minutes.

the only good thing taken from this game is aldridge finally hit big shots when he needed to, maybe he is embracing his all star role.

We have to many players that will put there heads down and make bad decisions (felton and crawford and sometimes mathews.......primarily felton) our players need to keep their heads up and look at batum screaming for the pass WIDE open in the corner, it is open all day, just give it to him

Dallas wrapped this thing, put a bow tie on it, handed it to us, and we dropped it, watching it roll down the steps over and over and over again.

Again, we came out flat in the first half. Why? I have no clue. But its the third straight game it's happened, and its cost us two of the three. LA gets 33 & 12 and we lose. He needs HELP. Jamal did his best in the second half, but he still settles far too much for the mid-range shot when the lane is open. Batum plays like LeBron on defense but like a scared rookie on offense. Why did he pass up that shot in the first overtime? LA needs help and it's got to come from Jamal, Gerald, or Nic.

    Post-Game Quotes:

Jamal Crawford on the last shot-
“That’s tough because the defender knows I needed a three. He was playing me to go get the two, but that doesn’t help my team so I shot the three. I tip my hat to them and I really thought the fist shot was good in the first overtime."
LaMarcus Aldridge on his thoughts about the game-
“Tough Loss. We really fought in the game and we did everything wehad to do to try and win it. We got stops down the end of the stretch, but we just couldn’t make buckets at the end. It came down to it that they made big shots at the end of the last quarter.”
Nate McMillan on going to Crawford offensively down the stretch-
“[On] the pick-and-rolls we needed his ability to try to create. LaMarcus [Aldridge] was good in the post, and when we didn’t have the post-up I liked the combination of a pick-and-roll with LaMarcus trying to bring Haywood away from the basket. And Crawford had some opportunities to get into the paint. We’ve just got to finish.”

Agreed, Felton is playing horribly and wasting possessions. He is shooting 37% from the field and 20% from the three. Those types of numbers are NOT acceptable. On the 15 shots he shoots a game he is averaging less then 5 makes. He needs to go.

i dont think we have to give up on felton yet, maybe sit him a couple games, give the young guys a chance and let felton spend his energy in the gym to find his shot. then if he comes back and still cant perform boot him. he is playing decent defense though.

The problem isn't Felton, but primarily Nate's rotation or should we say inability to do so effectively.

Anyone out there, can you please explain how McMillan can possibly rationalize having an 8-man rotation on what should still be considered one of the deepest rosters in the league? Each time we've seen our young guys play we've seen promise, potential, and a drive to leave it on the court that is NOT THERE in some of our higher-caliber players right now. On other teams this season, coaches have completely benched their starters when underperforming, and given the spot to younger talent, who often then showed up for a big game (Leonard on the Spurs, Lin on Knicks, etc). And now, we hear that Nate announced he is taking Craig Smith OUT of the rotation! So why did we pick up Craig Smith and Nolan Smith at all, if they are going to be looked at the same way as Luke Babbitt and Armon Johnson by Coach Nate?

We don't need benchwarmers, we need our serious players to be able to play hard every minute they're on the floor, and you do that by getting them rest. Especially when you have backups who have given you every reason to believe they are capable of providing solid play in limited minutes. Both Smiths have shown they can do that, as well as Elliot Williams and MAYBE even Chris Johnson.

The only bench guys that should NOT be in rotation are Babbitt and Armon Johnson, because they have consistently underperformed in the NBA. It blows my mind that McMillan thinks the rest are useless though.

Wake up, Nate. Learn some flexibility. NOW or it'll be too late.

agree completely, blazer247, craig smith was putting in great minutes and nolan has played good defense thus far. sure nolan still has a little rookie jitters to him, maybe eliot does too but if you give them a constant 10 or so minutes a game the jitters go away and come playoff time we have reliable backups. it's like a rookie misses 1 3pointer and he's done for the season with nate. if he's going to be hard on them like that why not come down on crawford and felton when they are 6 of 20 for the night? it's no wonder batum was afraid to shoot for 4 years he probably go benched rookie season the second he missed a shot.
