I've been scouring the interwebz and it seems there is one name who keeps coming up in trade rumors amongst Rip City: Steve Nash. The 37-year old, two-time MVP is an unrestricted free agent after this season and his contract is not extension eligible, meaning whatever team acquires him takes the risk of it being only a half-year rental. Even at 37, Steve is still getting it done, averaging 14.3 points, shooting .528 from the field, .398 from 3, and 9.9 assists in 31.5 minutes per night.

First, two questions need to be answered before the Trail Blazers look at a guy like Nash. One: Does he propel this team into the upper-echelon of the Western Conference? If the answer is no, move along. There's absolutely no reason to make a move for a 37-year old if it doesn't help you win now. Two: What would Portland have to give up? Phoenix would most likely be looking for expiring contracts, young talent and draft picks. Unfortunately for Portland, they don't own their 2013 draft pick (protected through 2016 I believe) so you don't really want to continue giving up those picks. There are expirings (Camby, Felton) and young talent (Matthews, Batum, Smith, Williams, Babbitt) though.

Personally, I'm not sure if Nash elevates us into elite status but if you can get a great deal ala what we got for Crash last year, then go for it. Batum and Elliot would be off limits in my book. And I wouldn't dare trade Camby unless another center is coming back our way. Would you want Nash in Rip City? If so, what would you offer?

Here's just a hypothetical trade that I think might intrigue Phoenix enough to part with Nash. If we won't budge on Batum, then I think Wesley might have to be offered up. Hollinger says it improves the Blazers by 8 wins so there's that as well.

i dont think you can give up matthews for that. if it worked to put camby in there instead of matthews i'd consider it since you get lopez to replace camby, but by giving up smith you've given up any hope at PG once nash is done. if you could do camby and armon johnson in place of matthews and smith i'd do it for sure, not sure if numbers work or if suns would though.

agree w stacks, i think losing felton, mathews, and nolan smith is giving up too much for a "1/2 year rental" and lopez. I like what was said about switching mathews and smith for camby and AJohnson, but i don't know if that would be acceptable for phoenix.

also, i'm STILL not givin up on Ray Ray. Did you see him tonight against Kemba Walker? Fan-frickin-tastic. I predicted earlier today that tonight would be the night that our 3 guards (Wes, Ray, and Jamal) would come out their slumps. Looks like I was 2/3, but Wesley won't be too far behind!

as far as this goes, why not answer both of our issues:
Nash/Gortat for Camby/Matthews (throw in various young contracts to appease the suns)
TradeMachine says this is legit, and would give the blazers a +15 on the Hollinger scale

Would put us short at SG unless Crawford would start though, another trade there?

    NOOOOOOO GORTAT...

This trade still doesn't change anything that Nash will be a short term solution, so it doesn't make sense to go for him unless we're going to have a team that can make something of it and win IMMEDIATELY. That doesn't happen by giving away reliable (Mathews/Camby) and young (Mathews n more?) players and starting with practically a whole new team...
I hope you realize that after some of the huge pickups we've made in the last year (Crawford, Wallace, Felton) to bolster (not rebuild) the roster we've had, if we give up Mathews and Camby then the only valuable players we'll have left that have been here for even ONE full season will be Aldridge and Batum!!! Having 2 of 10 slots be the only seasoned Blazers is unacceptable if we're not picking up some serious upgrades. Nash for a year doesn't qualify, and Gortat should always be a NO. I'll take a team that's worked together over that any day.

Its painful to say but I think Id make that trade. I would try to keep Nelson though. and Jcross and fill in for Mathews.

only if we can get KG and Ray Allen for Aldridge that way our starting 5 can be Nash,Allen,KG,Camby and Thomas and we can get sponsered by Ensure and Joint Juice. DHawes we want to get someone a little younger. I can see going for a center because we have to get LA a break since Nate refuses to play Chris Johnson. I would much rather see us going for someone a bit younger if we are going to give up Matthews.

Robin Lopez is 7 feet tall and can barely dunk. Huge dude, but not too coordinated or athletic. Nash is playing terrific as usual. I couldn't name one basketball team that wouldn't want that guy. But, he is getting older and there will be a time soon, that he has to hang up his sneaks. Matthews and Felton have youth on their side, I think it's a bit to chew off trading all those Blazers for a couple of Suns. Haven't you seen Phoenix's record lately? They're starting to catch up to us! We don't need to do them any favors you know?

First need is a centre. And no one will take ten and 13 for 4th or 5th. After like the 10th pick the talent off is huge.
