Is Ray Felton The Long-Term Answer At PG?

I've been torn on Ray Felton so far this year. I love his unselfish nature as he's always trying to find teammates for easy buckets before he even thinks about getting "his". He's quick as a cat. And his ability to split the defense and get into the paint is unparalleled by many. But his shooting has been atrocious. The one upgrade we thought for sure we were getting when we swapped Andre for Ray was shooting, both outside and inside.

Through 13 games, Felton is shooting just 34.7% from the field -- the lowest of his career -- and 14% from 3-point land -- by far the worst of his career (28% was his prior low back in 2009). And while the assists have been up to par (7.3), his 3.08 turnovers per game are the highest since his stint with the Knicks, running and gunning under Mike D'Antoni. I know that if you look at the top leaders in turnovers, generally they are the playmakers; the ones who always have the ball in their hands. It just seems that some of the turnovers have came at critical times and are unforced, like dribbling the ball off of his foot against the Clippers in the fourth.

To be far, he only has 13 regular season games under his belt and is playing under a completely new system. In fact, this is the fourth different coaching staff he's played on since the spring of 2010. Not to mention training camp was cut short by 7-10 days and there were only two preseason games to work out the kinks instead of the usual 7-8.

I'm still glad we made the swap as we needed a younger answer at point guard and am a huge Felton fan. He's single-handily won games for us this year. But, as is the case with most of the Blazers early on this season, consistency has been an issue. So to answer my own question, I don't know if he's the long-term solution at point guard. But I'm not writing him off after 13 games either. Let's see how he's playing and where the numbers are after the All-Star Break.

I don't recall him winning any games for us.  He had 12 assists against NO but only 2 pts.  He played pretty well in the Laker game and the 2nd Clipper game.  When the Blazers dealt Dre they said Felton younger and a bigger outside threat.  He's shooting a dismal .118 from 3 point land.  Players go through cold spells so I won't judge him there.  I'm also giving him a pass on his reputation for being out of shape.  He's just big boned!

Where I really see some issues is in his ball handling and court vision.  Crawford makes Felton's ball handling look about as good as mine.  How many times have we seen Felton drive with his head down, over penetrate, and either make a bad pass or dribble off a body part?  I don't know how much of that whole situation can be attributed to being on a new team and in a new system but it's really hurt the Blazers.  He looks frustrated on the court, even when he's playing pretty well.

I'm not down on him yet, but there is definitely some room for improvement right now.  He's probably the weakest link in the starting lineup.

Ray is a solid point guard, but I do not think he is the PG of the future for this team. I would like to see Portland go out and get a vocal leader that plays point. Who that is, well??? Maybe Williams becomes available if the Nets can not land Howard. Again Ray is a solid point guard. Just not the future.

How much of the blame can lie on Felton? First of all, imagine the assist numbers he WOULD be posting if our shooters were making their shots (yeah, I'm calling out Batum, Matthews, and even Aldridge here). Many of the times he turns it over have something to do with sloppy offensive executions from ALL 5 Blazers on the court. And how many of his 3's have actually been good looks as opposed to the ones he has to jack up late in the shot clock because no one else can get open?

Heck... maybe I'm just defending my own character on 2k12, but the point is that all the Blazers are playing kinda sloppy right now. It's easy to notice the PG mistakes first, but think about how many decent passes from Felton have been bobbled by Nic and LA. Raymond isn't Steve Nash in his prime. But I think he's a solid enough point guard to start on a championship team. As long as the rest of the pieces are also doing their part.

Felton did good tonight, until Tayshon Prince's size 15 got in the way.

No kidding, Tobyus! Does anyone else want the NBA to change the rule so that's a kick-ball, the clock stops and you inbound it? I mean, obviously you shouldn't get the advantage if you dribble off your own foot or a teammate's foot, but if an opposing player's foot causes you to lose possession, I think that should be a kick-ball period.

Ray looks like he's finally getting into rhythm. His jumper looks completely different, which is a good thing and he's playing with more confidence. I really want to see him run more pick and rolls with our bigs. If the defender runs away from him to stick with the man setting the screen, then go ahead and take the mid-range jump shot. It seemed like whenever he did that the past few games, the jumper was money and made that play nearly unguarded.

His shot isn't falling but his assist-turnover ratio has been impressive lately. It still feels like he's pressing a bit. Ray just needs to play within the flow of the offense and just let loose. He has a decent jumper but he needs to take the right shots. Shoot it off the pick and roll and when LA kicks it out to him because of the double team. Just don't force contested shots early in the shot clock.

He takes care of the ball and distributes well but we need him to be shooting better. Of course a PG shouldn't be in the game to shoot unless you are a D'rose type player. But if hes going to shoot they need to drop. No more of this 1-6 nonsense that I have seen in the stats way to often.
