Trail Blazers (1-0) vs. Kings (1-0)

After flirting with disaster on Opening Night against the 76ers, the Trail Blazers were able to hang onto a 107-103 victory. While Portland took care of business in the Pacific Northwest, the Kings made short work of the Lakers, defeating Los Angeles 100-91. For the Trail Blazers to open the season with two straight wins, they must shoot the ball better then they did against Philadelpha. 41% shooting from the field just won't cut it against the high-octane Kings squad who features a plethora of backcourt scorers including Marcus Thornton who scored a team-high 27 in their win over L.A. last night.

Was last night just a case of some shooting rust? Or will cold shooting nights haunt the Trail Blazers all season long? And who will step up and help out with the scoring load? Chuck Hayes has been known to defend Aldridge about as well as any player in the league, so someone else may have to carry the team tonight. Who will it be?

I would look to Matthews and Batum tonight. Both players played under their averages last night and will be fired up for tonight. There were a lot of good shots taken last night that just didn't fall. I think tonight will be a different story.

I agree. Wesley got off to a rough start last game but then hit those back-to-back threes and everything seemed to come together for him. The sames goes for Batum as well. He was passive in the first but then seemed to play within himself in the 2nd half and was rewarded with the bulk of the 4th quarter minutes.

Batum could've changed the score last night, but if you only play him for 20 minutes, it's kind of hard to ask him to score more than a few buckets (10) points, and play phenomenal defense on the boards and off.  We've got to figure out a way to give him more playing time.  Maybe limit Matthews time on the court a little more.  Matthews played 40 minutes and only had 14 points.  I would talk to our point guards about being a little bit more generous with their passing.  Sometimes I think that they think they're the only ones that can score.  Felton played 35 minutes and only scored 12 points.  Both Matthews and Felton were cold, cold, cold, so why keep Batum on the bench?

The problem hurting Batum is he isn't really a point guard or a two, and he simply will not start over Gerald Wallace. If he can improve his ball handling then we could use him in more places. But Felton is going to get major minutes because he's our starting point guard and Wesley has earned that time. Even though he wasn't shooting too hot in the first half, he came out guns blazing in the second half and it paid off.

I want to see the team basketball I saw against the Jazz on Monday along with a lot more player movement. We would just dump it into LA and stand around. There has to be someone moving without the ball, slashing to the hoop for easy buckets.

What an amazing second half by the Trail Blazers! Talk about taking advantage on offense. When Jimmer was in the game, we went right into Batum in the post and the game completely got turned around. But how we can not talk about Crash? Dude was every tonight and once again lead the charge. I'm not sure we win either game without his hustle and energy.

Well after seeing tonight's game, do you still think that Batum isn't a 2?  He played the two, had great defense and scored 15 points, not counting the steals and assists.  Batum is a 2 and finally got to play the 2.  Batum and Wallace on the floor together is magic, they're both unselfish and love the fast tempo.

I agree Mieke, the Wallace-to-Batum stuff tonight was awesome! I've been thinking Nic playing 2 for a while now. And I think the Euro league pushed him even further into that type of role. He looks so much more comfortable on the court now.

Gerald took tonight's game over. MVP of the game no question. I liked LA showing his hook inside and pick-and-pop outside. Wesley hit some good jumpers, but he really needs to work on finishing at the rim or he won't have that starting 2 role forever. I liked the little bit we saw from Craig Smith and CJ (always love it when CJ gets some playing time). But in those last couple minutes, I think Nolan just moved himself forward in Nate's mind. That kid will earn himself playing time quick.

Things got dicey in that 1st half. Once the Blazers came alive, that was all she wrote for Sac-Town. Lamrcus had a quiet 24, and Batum definately had another solid effort off the bench. I thought Craig Smith added some effort in the paint that had been missing from the bench unit. And Gerald Wallace easily was the best player in the NBA tonight.

He can be effective at times as a two. I still don't think he can create a shot for himself, but when the opposition tries to go small, he's able to defend them on one end and post them up on the other. So, if given the proper situation, I have no problem with Nic at the two. I do agree that Gerald and Nic together play amazing together. Now if only Batum will play with that aggressiveness like Crash does every game...

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
