    Portland

    Trail Blazers
guard Brandon Roy is expected to announce his retirement

due to degenerative knees, perhaps as soon as Friday, sources have told ESPN The

    Magazine's Chris Broussard.

The Blazers had said earlier in the week they were expecting Roy to be ready

    for training camp Friday.

Roy, who has had trouble with his knees, met with team executives Monday to

discuss his future. He told them he felt great and wanted to help the team in

    any way he could.

There had been reports that the Blazers planned to use an amnesty clause in

the league's new labor agreement to waive Roy, a three-time All-Star.

"Our plan is that Brandon will be a part of this team going forward," Blazers

    president Larry Miller said Monday.

Roy has said he lacks cartilage in both knees, meaning there is no cushion

between the bones. After arthroscopic surgery last January, Roy came back to

play, his minutes were limited off the bench, and he finished with an average of

12.2 points, a career low, in 47 games

I'm always skeptical of stuff like this until it all actually happens. But if this happens, there better be a parade through downtown Portland to celebrate what this man has done for the city and the team.

What a shame. Such a great talent in his prime. Hope it's not true but it looks like it is.

Doctors told him 'You can't do this anymore. You might end up not walking'.  Shocking. Brokenhearted.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm fighting tears right now and I'm a man that never cries.   Really heartbroken.  I thought he would for sure be returning.

I say Game 1 on the 26th everyone wears a Brandon Roy jersey in the stands.  Give that man a proper ovation.  He deserves it.  Much love B-Roy.

Its a sad day in P-Town today. Im stunned. I love that kid. Thanks B for all that youve done for our squad. Lets just hope after this wears off on him that they give him a spot on the coaching staff. Id like to see him become our next Monty Williams success story. You'll be missed.

I still don't believe this to be true. It's too quick from when just the other day BRoy and the Office were both sayin he was lookin so much better than last year and he's ready to play a role, now there's this rumor he's about to announce retirement?

Can anyone please link the ACTUAL article where Roy hinted that he might be retiring? Cuz so far it seems totally possible this is just another rumormill starting up. Are you sure John Conzano didn't say it and someone else just took it for the word of God?

Brandon Roy is one of those people not to be taken for granted. All you haters can get a life now. If they keep treating Aldridge like this (letting rookies make the All Star team over him!, thanks NBA!) we won't have another all star for a while.

No price can be put on what he did for this team. He brought a lot old fans back. Got us into the playoffs 2 1/2 years. Gave Portland some good love from the media (all the writers around the league love the guy. He's a good person. And, he can school a team playing through pain. He at least tried to give it a go, which shows a 'no quitter' instinct that he CLEARLY infected the team with.

He's my guy and I hope i get to meet him someday and shake his hand and thank him for what he's done. Best shooting guard to ever play here other than the "Glide".

He could not have more class, to put the community of Portland and the Blazer fans and organization first, and opting to retire rather than seek a trade or otherwise.

I just want to add he is the only player I can shoot with in NBA 2k11. MVP of the finals on my season file.

Say it isn't so. Can't they take cartilidge from his brother or father or something? If ANYBODY deserves a miracle, it's the amazing Brandon Roy.

Thank you, Blazer 247! There's a real crossroads that we as fans are facing, and I don't think anyone seems to realize it. Not 3 days ago, Larry Miller, Chad Buchanan, and Nate Macmillan told us all that Brandon would be competing for a starter role on the roster. Nothing could have changed drastically in the past few days to make Brandon go from "feeling great" to retirement (except maybe a car accident). So if we accept these possibly true reports about B-Roy's retirement, we must also come to the conclusion that the entire Blazers management lied to us and cannot be trusted when it comes to information about players. However, it makes more sense that the Blazers management (and not some hack blogger from NBA.com) actually knows what's going on with the players on their roster.

I just gagged on my foot. It looks legit. I'm really surprised at the comments at the last press conference in conjunction with this outcome. Whatever... there was some false hope somewhere that screwed up everyone's perception. That's where I'll leave it.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
