With the date to sign free agents looming closer each day, a lot of rumors and reports will start to surface about which free agent is likely heading where and for how much. Use this thread for all things free agency. I'll start it off...

    Marc Stein reports-
Kings source confirms Sacramento has offered four-year deal at midlevel exception ($20 million) to Chuck Hayes and optimistic he'll accept.
This is tough, because Hayes was one of only a handful of available big men on the market and now he looks to be gone. But, at least he didn't go to a contender, especially an elite team out West.

As for the Trail Blazers, Dwight Jaynes reports Portland has contacted undrafted free agent center Greg Smith out of Fresno State.
CSNNW.com has learned that the 6-10, 253 pound center out of Fresno State, Greg Smith, is scheduled to be in Portland early this week to meet with Blazers’ management and work out at the practice facility.
Smith, 20, went undrafted in the 2011 NBA draft after leaving school following his sophomore season. He was considered by some to be a guy who could have squeezed into the tail end of the first round because of his NBA-ready body, but that wasn’t enough to entice a team to give him a shot.

ESPN is reporting Shane Battier will sign with the Heat tomorrow

Battier announced on his Twitter account Thursday that he plans to sign with the Heat when free agency opens on Friday afternoon. A number of contending teams had been courting Battier over the last few days, including the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs.
"The lockout gave me lots of time to consider what was important to me at this stage of my life and career," Battier wrote on Twitter. "Over the last week, I've played out every scenario in my head over and over. It always came back to one thing for me: a winning role."

Ken Berger is reporting the Knicks are in the lead to land Tyson Chandler

Multiple league executives say the Knicks are now in the lead to land Tyson Chandler, jumping in front of the Warriors.
I bet they are way overpaying for Tyson but this makes them a lot better defensively.

More from Ken Berger regarding Chandler to New York-
If the deal goes through, the Knicks use amnesty on Chauncey Billups and move Ronny Turiaf to make room for Chandler, sources say.
This makes more sense. I was wondering how the Knicks would be able to offer up so much when their roster is already capped out. Chandler is > Billups but I'm not sure if you want to lean so heavily on young players in the backcourt.

Interesting 3-way deal to send CP3 to LAL.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7332598/talks-three-way-trade-sending-chris-paul-new-orleans-hornets-los-angeles-lakers-pau-gasol-houston-rockets

The New Orleans Hornets are engaged in trade talks with the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets about a three-team trade that would send Chris Paul to the Lakers and Pau Gasol to the Rockets, sources said.

The Hornets would receive either Luis Scola or Kevin Martin, and possibly both, as well as draft picks. Houston owns the New York Knicks' first-round pick from 2012, as well as its own.

The Rockets also have young assets to offer New Orleans in players like Chase Budinger, Patrick Patterson and Jordan Hill.

Interesting 3-way trade. I really like it for Houston as Gasol is much better than Martin + Scola. I really don't like it for New Orleans, because I think they need picks to rebuild that team if Paul goes. And I'm not sure CP3 is the best fit in LA. Also, who plays power forward for LA without Pau? What happens if Bynum goes down and there's no Pau to shift over to center and bail them out?

Kurt Thomas is a third rate player and no improvement to our team. going after him is a waste of time and effort when there are other players who are younger and more athletic out there, not to mention better ball players.

Why not go after NeNe?  do we have enough sources to sign him?  Amnesty Roy, combine with the mid level exception.  I think he would be a good addition especially with Oden down for the count and Roy gone.

Is it bothering anyone else that it's the 2nd day of free agency and the blazers haven't signed anyone? They have better be hashing out the terms of a contract with a big right now. I hope this B-Roy business, which by itself hurts us to begin with, didn't distract the management to the point that they also botch the free agency period. We're all (for lack of a better word) grieving at the moment, but we can't end up in a pit of despair that prevents us from putting together the best roster we can. With Oden's setback I would expect even more aggressive action in free agency, the trade market, or SOMEWHERE!

We dont need Chuck Hayes. Play LaMarcus at 5, Gerald at 4, Nicolas at 3, Wesley at 2, and Raymond at 1. Felton likes to run. We need to become a small running team.

If we pick up Kurt Thomas, I give up. He's actually OLDER than Camby. We have a couple of front-court bench players in CJ and Babbit. I wouldn't mind seeing CJ get more minutes at the 5. But I agree we need a big. I like what I'm seeing with McRoberts' stats. He's improved in every category each year in the league. He's also earned more minutes every year. Evans has some good stats, but he's basically doing about the same as he was 9 years ago as a rookie. Maybe we don't want to see any more young players on the roster, but personally I like McRoberts out of these three options. Although I'll add that none of them would be my top choice.

I agree. Total waste to play Gerald at 4. Babbit can run picks and I have a better feeling about his shot this year, so I would like to see him at the 4. That still leaves a problem when we need rebounding and defense from our second unit. There's no question that we need a solid (NOT ROOKIE) big to pull down boards and be a post presence when LA and Camby are off the floor.

Sources: Blazers to add Kurt Thomas

Veteran center Kurt Thomas is signing a two-year deal with the Portland Trail

    Blazers
, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Thomas, 39, is the league's oldest active player and will join fellow Dallas

native LaMarcus Aldridge in the Blazers' frontcourt

    rotation.

Thomas spent last season in Chicago. Portland will be the ninth team for

Thomas, who has averaged 8.6 points and 6.9 rebounds in 16 seasons.

reaction: still trying to absorb things so not fully following all the nba just yet. he did a great job the past 3 seasons, a gritty defender, does a lot of good things on the floor, and excellent role player and hoping he can have some great games for us. I approve. (sorry for the big font, still learning these computer things, sorry about that ;)

Kurt Thomas is a good addition to a front court that is hurting.  He started in place of Noah in Chicago last year when they lost not one, but two big men.  He fouls hard and knows how to set screens, two things not in the Portland Vocabulary (except for the thrilla)

This is an inexpensive move that still allows us to add in the future depending on the Roy/Amnesty/Retirement Fiasco.  Lets not forget we have an amazing core, Roy and Oden were non existent for the better part of last season.  We now have an improved Batum, a younger more athletic PG in Felton.  Wallace has the system under his belt and Mr Aldridge is only improving!

All we need is to avoid the injury bug.  Let the young guys like E. Williams, Nolan Smith and L. Babbitt get some playing time and see what they can do!  Kurt Thomas is basically a better version of J. Howard and we all appreciated how he filled in when we needed him!

Lets quit complaining and just start appreciating having a team in our city to cheer for.  Go Blazers!
