    Geoff Petrie and Maurice Lucas will forever be linked in Trail Blazers history. In fact, it’s ironic that they match up in the quarterfinals of our bracket since one’s Trail Blazers career wouldn’t have come to be without the other.

    After six stellar seasons in the Rose City (1970-76), Portland’s first years as an NBA squad, the Trail Blazers elected to trade the sharp-shooting Petrie to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the second pick in the ABA dispersal draft.

    Portland selected the Enforcer. And exactly 10 months later, the Trail Blazers were NBA Champions.

    Career Stats As A Trail Blazer: 29.7 mpg, 15.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 2.5 apg, 0.81 spg, 0.72 bpg, .461 FG %, .125 3 PT %, .763 FT %

    Lucas played four straight seasons with Portland, and then returned for a year in 1987-88. In five seasons in all, he averaged 15.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Lucas is one of four three-time NBA All-Stars in team history (1977-79). He also earned All-NBA Second Team honors in 1977-78 and was twice named to the NBA All-Defensive Team (First Team, 1977-78; Second Team, 1978-79).

    But a vote for Lucas in this competition is most likely a vote for Portland’s thrilling 1977 NBA Championship run. The Trail Blazers won no more than 38 games and never made the playoffs in any of the first six seasons of their existence (1970-76). In one year with Lucas, the team won the ultimate prize. During that legendary 1976-77 season, Lucas led the team in scoring during the regular season (20.2) and playoffs (21.2), and ranked second behind Walton in rebounding (11.4 during regular season, 9.9 in playoffs).

    Petrie, well, he could just flat out shoot. By nearly any measure, Portland’s very first draft pick was one of the best scorers in team history. His 21.8 scoring average was better than guys named Drexler, Porter, Robinson, Kersey and Paxson, the only five Trail Blazers to ever score more total points in the red and black uniform than Petrie. And when you consider Petrie’s long-range shooting ability and the lack of a 3-point arc in the 70s, it really isn’t even that close.

    When Petrie scored 24.8 points per game during the 1970-71 season, it wasn’t just Portland’s first year in the league, it was Petrie’s too. The rookie out of Princeton ranked seventh in the league in scoring (24.8), earned a trip to the NBA All-Star Game and was named NBA Rookie of the Year. He again ranked seventh in the NBA in scoring with a career-high 24.9 points per game in 1972-73, a year that saw him score 51 points not once, but twice. He followed that season up with an eighth-place showing in the scorer’s column in 1973-74 (23.8). Only Clyde Drexler joins him among Trail Blazers who have ranked inside the league’s top 10 in scoring in three different seasons.

    i thought this would be an automatic for Lucas until i heard Harry Glickman and Jim Barnett talk about how good Petrie was in his days in portland. Petrie's numbers are astounding. he it would be hard to vote against him. Lucas is an institution in portland. everyone respects him and he led the blazers to the title. very tough call (perhaps the toughest thus far in the bracket). vote to Lucas.

    first of all everyone must pay their respects to maurice lucas and his family... RIP LUCAS 20... MOMENTS OF SILIENCE... but id have to vote for maurice in this case taking in the fact the schonz glickman and bucky all have said peitie was one of the greats.. i believe he was the number one over all pick... but the ENFORCER takes my vote for being the most humbliest players and the guy whos got your back no matter what... if you played dirty he'll play dirtier, if you hit a player he'll hit you back, but at the end of the day the dog goes to sleep and you have what ive heard as the nicest guy you'll ever meet... he has made some of our players better and bring out the best in there games and made them a force... he's beloved in the community for all the work he has done and thankfully his son has kept it going. so i leave RIP lucas for being a great player a great coach a great father and husband and over all a great person... ( yes i know casey i wont win lol, im in your contest doghouse lol)

    All my parents could do was freak out and imitate the awesome things Maurice Lucas did for the Blazers. I understand a little about Geoff Petrie being an basketball innovator and great Portland player, but from actually having seen neither player play, I'll have to stick with Lucas. Because my folks only whispered Geoff Petrie to me as a kid, while showing me in their best detail the elbows Big Luke used to throw at fools to get boards.

    LUUUUUUUUUKE! Petrie was a great scorer but along with scoring, Mo was a great rebounder and defender. As if that wasn't enough, he just had the proverbial "it" factor. He possessed the intangibles to take the team to the top. Case and point was the fight he started in Philly which ignited the team to win 4 straight.

    I think people are sleeping on Petrie quite a bit. Remember, there was no 3-point line when GP played so his career points could have been way higher.

    I'd vote for Petrie over Porter..but not over Luke..
