Over the past months we’ve whittled away at the prospects for Greatest Trail Blazer. Now we’ve undoubtedly come to a match up sure to test the loyalties of avid fans from the early 1990s. The squad that brought rabid Blazermania back to Rip City has pitted two of its own against each other in the Elite Eight.

This matchup between Jerome Kersey and Terry Porter is a toughie. Both were great players and integral pieces in the three-year run that garnered the Trail Blazers 179 wins, an NBA-best record and two trips to The NBA Finals. Even now they continue to impact Portland as Alumni Ambassadors for the team they pushed toward greatness.

Now, as we trek along toward naming the greatest Trail Blazer we’ve got to make our arguments and cast our votes.

Kersey’s competition is stiff. Terry Porter, another perpetual Trail Blazer, acted as the floor general during his decade in Portland. The Scottie Pippen to partner with Clyde Drexler’s Michael Jordan, Porter helped push “The Glide” to great heights. A two-time all-star in his own right, Porter’s leadership from the point and accuracy from behind the arc were clutch to the prosperity of Rip City in the early 90s.

Also keeping up with the Trail Blazers, Porter acts as an Alumni Ambassador and a studio analyst for the television broadcast team.

    Schonely Speaks:
"With Drexler in the back court and the rest of that team, in the 90's. Much influence, maybe the best back court that this franchise has ever seen."

    No. 25 Jerome Kersey | Small Forward | 6-7 | 225 lbs

    Career Stats As A Trail Blazer: 25.8 mpg, 12.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.8 bpg, .476 FG%, .198 3PT%, .699 FT%

Next up, Jerome Kersey, an ever-persevering talent. Coaches, teammates and fans alike never had to question which aspect of Kersey’s game would show up on a given night—he brought it all. His solid work ethic and never-waning commitment to his team—not to mention the killer flat top—endeared him to Blazer fans a decade ago as they do now.

In continuing the Trail Blazers tradition of community outreach, Kersey can be found representing the pinwheel across the Portland metro area. From basketball clinics and season ticket holder events, to the Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity, his dedication to Portland and Trail Blazers fans may put him a leg above the competition.

    Schonely Speaks:
"Mercy Mercy Jerome Kersey. A true team player. Gave his body...full out. Could do it all."

Now it’s time to cast your vote. Will it be Kersey and his high flying dunks? Or Porter and his bombs from three-point land? Watch the videos, check out the photo galleries and make your decision: Who will stay in the running for greatest Trail Blazer?

The polls will stay open for one week. The player with the most votes will move onto the next round. Who should advance in this matchup and why?

Both players are in my all-time top 5 favorite Trail Blazers, so this one won't be decided on favoritism. But they were both tremendous talents and led us to never before seen heights. before I make my vote, I want to hear who everyone else is picking. Sway me!

What happens in case of a tie? This is the toughest decision yet. Can't we just give them each a half vote, so both guys can advance?

Had to go with Terry. While Jerome was the better defensive player, Porter had the upper hand on offense. He really was our clutch player down the stretch, always seeming to hit the big bucket when we needed it most. Also, his ability to score really made the other elite point guards of that era work hard to stop him on defense, taking a lot of their energy and focus from their offense.

Terry by the slightest of margins. Mercy was a beast on the break and a great hustle player/defender, but I felt like when the team needed a clutch bucket, they either went to Porter or Drexler. To me, that is a sign of an elite player.

i think these guys were both blazers when i first began watching games with my family. it's a shame they have to go up against one another. i've seen several clips of both players and they were both very impressive. Kersey was all over the place, diving for loose balls and running the court. Porter was reliable and a team leader. this is close, but there's not really much doubt. vote to Porter.

I have to go with Jerome.  He was the lift we needed on many nights when the other guys were in a funk.  His dunks and rundown blocks were fantastic to watch and fired the crowd and the team.  Porter was great and I am still trying to perfect that jumper of his!

Porter edges his good friend Kersey with 65% of the vote. Onto the Final Four and a matchup against Big Red for TP!

I love the Grit and Grind, and I love the Spurs timeless play. I think if the Spurs get to the finals, they will beat the heat, but they won''t beat the Grizzlies easily, and the Grizz can''t beat the Heat. I know it''s weird.
