    To win the championship after being embarrassed in Philadelphia, the Blazers had to win four of the next five games. Not impossible, but not likely. Indeed, no team in NBA history had ever won four straight games after dropping the first two games of the championship series.

    Where were you when Blazermania was born, one might ask.

    Game 3 in Portland, by all accounts, was the pivotal game of the entire series because it demonstrated that the Blazers, when they played their game (as Jack Ramsay repeatedly uttered in true cliché fashion), were a very good match for the 76ers.

    Philadelphia did get back into the game, pulling to within one point at 54-53 with 1:28 left in the half. Two jumpers by Maurice Lucas, who had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and a pair of free throws by Lionel Hollins gave Portland a 60-53 lead at halftime.

    The double-dunks by Walton in less than the time it takes most people to get out of bed in the morning aroused a record Memorial Coliseum crowd of 12,923 and triggered the greatest fourth quarter offensive explosion in a Blazers playoff series.

    Portland scored a record 42 points during the period, en route to a resounding 129-107 victory.

    Maurice Lucas, fresh off his message-sending skirmish with 76ers big man Darryl Dawkins in Game 2, took an aggressive approach to Game 3 in Portland. With the Trail Blazers down two games to none, Lucas and the rest of the Trail Blazers knew it was now or never. And Lucas carried the Trail Blazers offensively. He led Portland in Game 3 with 27 points, his most in any of the six NBA Finals contests. But “Luke” did much more than put the ball in the basket. He added 12 rebounds, five assists and a game-high three steals. During Portland’s 19-game run to the 1977 NBA title, Lucas averaged 21.2 points (51.9% FG), 9.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

    Calvin Natt had some stellar games as a Trail Blazer during the early 1980s, but none of them stood out in hindsight quite like his 33-point, 14-rebound performance at Houston on January 22, 1983.

    It’s the Blazers, the NBA bible goes on to say, who established that mark when they shut out the home team Rockets 17-0 in the five-minute overtime period en route to a 113-96 victory. The 17-point victory margin broke a record set by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1977 when they outscored New Jersey 18-2 in the overtime period.

    The game itself mirrored Portland’s season. Playing without star forward Mychal Thompson, who sprained his ankle two nights earlier in a loss to Dallas, the Blazers nursed a 51-48 halftime lead, but couldn’t shake the Rockets. In fact, the game (prior to the overtime anyway) was not a stellar performance by the Blazers. But, as both coaches acknowledged afterwards, it was a great game that Calvin Natt wouldn’t allow his team to lose.

    None of the Rockets could stop Natt, though ex-Blazer Wally Walker, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant (father of the current Laker star) and Terry Teagle all tried. For the game, Natt connected on a career-high 16 field goals in just 22 attempts, scoring on inside postups and spin moves, tipins and outside jumpers.

    Natt was so dominant – often drawing a double-team – that it gave Paxson, Lever and Carr some easy opportunities, too. Paxson, like Natt, was solid all night, scoring 25 points, with six rebounds and seven assists.

    Portland’s 17-point margin, and of course the zero points allowed, indeed still stand as NBA overtime records to this day. As for Natt, his banner day included just six missed field goal attempts, as he finished the game an incredible 16-for-22 (72.7%) from the floor. And not only did Natt’s 33 points lead all players in the game, he also pulled in a game-best 14 rebounds. He only bested the 33 points once that year – two nights earlier when he netted 34 at Dallas, for what became quite the week in a spectacular season for Natt. He averaged a career-high tying 20.4 points per game that year and led the squad in scoring 27 times.

    This is why Lucas advances. Sure, he was a talented forward and put up great numbers but he was the heart and soul of that team. You didn't just mess with one of his teammates. The intangibles he brought to the table are second to none.

    True it is no contest..however Natt ranks in the top 5 SF's in Team History..Luke had the biggest heart off the court though..He would come into the place where I work, and his whole family were so nice and respectful..He did a great job of being a father..In my opinion, could finish as the top Blazer..but prob won't..definitely Top 3 all time..

    Calvin needed a vote so I gave him mine although Maurice had a better career.... the difference was the 3 inches of height, Calvin was only 6'-6" and Maurice had Bill Walton patrolling the paint.

    Sorry Calvin, no contest here. Maybe had we not dealt him to Denver for Kiki he could have had a longer and most illustrious career in Rip City.

    Natt was very underrated and it was a bummer for the blazer brass to trade 3 good players (Natt, Wayne Cooper, and 'Fat' Lever) for one guy (Kiki) who was one dimensional.

    In a game of 21, this would be a good match up. But on the NBA hardwood, Lucas would send a messege.

    I felt bad for choosing Lucas so easily, but, no disrespect to Natt, there's a reason why No. 20 is hanging from the rafters and No. 33 isn't. Natt was a great player but his time was cut short due to the Kiki trade and Lucas came in right from the jump and helped deliver a title.

    after reading about Natt in the first round, i found i really liked what i had learned. however, Lucas is a legend. in fact, he was a legend before he passed away. i'm glad fans have a great opinion of Natt; he seemed to have earned it. just can't vote against Lucas.

    Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
