Can someone please explain to me why people want us to sign Hedo Turkoglu? Yes, he is a good player. Yes, he would be a fantastic back-up at the 4 to LaMarcus Aldridge. Yes, coming off the bench he would give us a different look than LA, and, yes, he would be a HUGE improvement over Travis Outlaw. But here are two questions we should answer before deeming him "the missing piece":

    1) How does Turkoglu fit into our long-term plans finically?
    2) How does Turkoglu fit with this team/Where would he play?
    3) Why would Turkoglu want to sign with us?

To the first question: I don't see KP and Paul Allen spending the massive amounts of money it would take to sign Turkoglu away from Orlando. Remember, Otis Smith is the GM that gave Rashard Lewis a MAX CONTRACT in the sign-and-trade with Seattle 2 or 3 years ago. It's not beyond him to overspend and go above the luxury tax threshold to keep him (and his team together) for a few more years. A GM's credibility is tied to his team's success, and Smith has to prove that this Magic team, with its unique slash and kick style of play, can win a championship, and Turkoglu is a huge part of that. He will probably do anything to keep him. Consequently, I don't see KP trying to out-bid Smith for a back-up 4 that will take minutes away from LA, thereby hindering his development as a player. Further, how would his massive contract fit in long-term with this team? Let me put it this way: the ONLY players that are signed after this year are Webster (who just signed a 5 year contract), and Joel (who will expire in 2 years). I don't see how we can give Turkoglu a massive contract when we need to hang out huge contracts to Roy and LA, and give Rudy and Batum sizable raises. He just doesn't seem like he would fit with our long-term finical plans.

To the second qustion: Turkoglu would demand at least 20 minutes a game, and I don't see him getting that as merely a back-up 4. He can play the 3, but he can't defend the position at all. Further, we have Batum, Webster, Rudy, and Outlaw competing for minutes there, so he won't be able to play there unless we trade some people (which is entirely possible). So basically, we're paying 10-15 mil a year for a packup PF. Fantastic.

To the third question: I don't think Turkoglu wants to play in Portland, for all of the reasons stated above, and for the SAME reason that many of the top-tier players in the draft class don't work out for Portland. First off, the Magic can pay him more money than we can. Second, he is a KEY player for them. He is their go-to guy in the clutch. It's not Jameer Nelson, it's not Rashard Lewis, it's not Dwight Howard (he of one offensive post move), its Turkoglu. He's THE GUY in crunch time. Why would he want to go from a team where he has practically patented the drop-step-3-in-crunch-time shot to a team where he wouldn't even be a starter? Third, and in the same vein, he wouldn't even get the minutes he wants. He could really only play the 4 baring a trade, and that's not what he wants.

I just don't see how he fits, finically or otherwise, with this team.

Turkoglu would want to play in Portland simply because we are a winning team and our coach isn't an ass.

Pass on Turk. I'd rather spend the money on FA point guard and/or a PF backing Aldridge with more bulk and aggressiveness.

I agree. Turk is a shooter and if we even get a forward he has to be tough. I predict a new PG in the future and not a new Forward

Maybe we should go for Pekovic as a restricted free agent and see what Minn will do.
