Kevin Duckworth’s massive 7-foot frame all too often overshadowed his big game and perhaps even bigger heart. In five straight seasons from 1987-92, Duckworth scored in double figures, grabbed better than six rebounds and played in at least 78 games. Two times an All-Star (1989, 1991) and once the league’s Most Improved Player (1987-88), Duckworth wasn’t just your average contributor on a great team – and those teams were great. He was the starting center for a stretch of three seasons between 1989-92 that saw the Trail Blazers win 59, 63 and 57 games, the most in any three-year run in team history. And oh by the way, Portland reached two NBA Finals in that span, once in 1990 and again in 1992. Always one of Memorial Coliseum’s favorite sons, Duckworth’s legacy among Portland fans was cemented when he stunningly returned to the court for Game 7 of the 1990 Western Conference Semis just a couple weeks after breaking his right hand. In seven total seasons with the Trail Blazers, Duckworth ranks 10th in team history in scoring (7,188), free throws made (2,848) and rebounds (3,327).

Tough. Gritty. Strong. Aggressive. Brian Grant was just one of those players you wanted on your side and hated to line up against. He may have only played in the red and black for three seasons, but his impact on the Trail Blazers and their fans went far from unnoticed. Maybe it was his incredible knack for rebounding. Maybe it was his defensive prowess. Or maybe it was just those uniquely defining dreadlocks. All in all, Grant averaged just a shade over 10 points and eight rebounds in his 172 games with Portland. He led the 1998-99 squad in rebounding (9.8). A year later, he helped Rip City to the 2000 Western Conference Finals. If he didn’t earn his stripes against Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz in the Conference Semis, he sure had a battle on his hands in the Conference Finals against Shaquille O’Neal and the L.A. Lakers. But he refused to back down. And if there’s one thing Trail Blazers fans adore, it’s hard-working, team-first attitudes. That was Brian Grant.

Duckworth, all day! Not only was Duckworth a two time All-Star but he helped lead his team deeper into the playoffs than any one of Brian's. Another knock on BG is longevity. He only played three seasons in Rip City compared to Kevin's seven.

Brian Grant is second only to Maurice Lucas on the list of toughest Blazers of all time. He was an absolute monster on the boards when it counted. If only we kept him and traded sheed...

While Duckworth brought us a big smile and a buncha wins, Brian Grant brought us a bigger smile and inspiration.

For whatever reason, BG's production really slipped from his breakout campaigns of 98 & 99 to the 2000 season. In 98, he put up 12.1 points and 9.1 rebounds and 11.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in 99. During both of those years, BG played 32 minutes a night. But his minutes were cut to only 22 a night in 2000, resulting in only 7.3 points and 5.5 rebounds.

In five straight seasons from 1987-92, Duckworth scored in double figures, grabbed better than six rebounds and played in at least 78 games.
Duck was just more consistent and his peak was much higher than Brian's.

hard to choose between two such beloved blazers. the fact Duckworth was a blazer for twice as much gives him the edge, and the fact we made it to the finals twice adds to that. i would absolutely love to vote for Grant, but i just have to give the edge to Duckworth on this one.

Some make the point that Duckworth was a blazer twice as long & made the finals twice...true, but I still love the way Grant scrapped. The way he quitely went about his business and didn't back down from anyone, especially one of the dirtiest players I can remember Karl Malone. He should been with the blazers longer, and perhaps surrounded by a better group like Duckworth was we would have seen better results... he certainly did his part (no offense to some of the other players) but like one fan put it we should have kept him and traded sheed...who for all his talent just wanted to hang out around the perimeter, set screens and shoot 3 balls when his real talent was down in the low post doing turn around jumpers for which he was almost unstoppable...lazy.... Grant is my man! Relentless unassuming TEAM player! I just have to go with Grant.

Keep in mind that some roles lend themselves to more notoriety and some...like Grant play a different role every bit as important. Some things just can't be or just aren't measured in terms of statistics...GRANT!

I loved to see Grant out on the floor fighting for anything he could get, but Duck a truly great big man, and those don't come along every day. I look at Grant as someone I was happy to see playing for the Blazers, but I look at Duck as someone I'm proud to have looked up to as a hero in my youth.

I love Brian Grant, but I have to go with Duck in a very close call. He excelled at the center position for some Blazers teams that were championship caliber.

I disagree with this 110%. Duckworth had the biggest heart imaginable. If Duck didn't have heart, then he wouldn't have showed up to Game 7 of the Western Conference Semis with a broken hand suffered just 6 games before and battle David Robinson. People like to criticize the big fella because he was sensitive and let outside opinion affect his play but he laid in on the line every game.

i think you'd get along well with my dad, Dustin. he told me last night that Duckworth was sensitive because he had so much heart and wanted to do so much for his team and the fans.
