    BROADWAY REGION
#1 Clyde Drexler vs. #8 Darnell Valentine

    No. 22 Clyde Drexler|Shooting Guard |6-7 | 222 lbs

    Career Stats As A Trail Blazer: 34.1 mpg, 20.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 5.7 apg, 2.1 spg, 1.46 bpg .478 FG %, .303 3 PT %, .789 FT %

Taken with the 14th overall pick in the 1983 draft, Clyde Drexler became the face of Rip City throughout his 12 year tenure. Across the nation kids wanted to be like Mike, but in the Pacific Northwest, it was all about Clyde. His impeccable flights to the basket garnered him the nickname, “The Glide”, which allowed him to captivate the imagination of fans worldwide. But it wasn’t all flash for Drexler, who had plenty of substance to his all-around game. On any given night, Clyde could lead the team in any statistical category as proven by his 21 career triple-doubles, a team record. When the book was closed on his illustrious career as a Trail Blazer, the accolades were endless. Drexler is  the franchise leader in points (18,040), rebounds (5,339), steals (1,795), second in assists (4,101), sixth in blocked shots (594), is the postseason leader in every statistical category but two (3 PT shooting, Blocks), an eight time NBA All-Star, and a four time All-NBA member. For his spectacular career, the Trail Blazers retired his #22 jersey in the Rose Garden rafters in 2001 and he was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2004.

    Schonely Speaks:
"THE best. Could do it all. He was outstanding in all phases of the game. An NBA all-star."

    No. 14 Darnell Valentine | 6-3 |Point Guard |183 lbs

    Career Stats As A Trail Blazer: 25.3 mpg, 9.8 points, 2.3 rpg, 5.4 assists, 1.7 spg, 0.1 bpg, .449 FG %, .056 3 PT %, .778 FT %

Coming out of the University of Kansas, the Trail Blazers picked up Darnell Valentine with the 16th overall pick in the 1981 draft. A true floor general during his five year stint in the Rose City, Valentine led the team in assists during the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons, handing out 5.8 and 7.0 helpers per game respectfully.  But Darnell was one of those players who saved his best moments for the bright lights of the postseason.  In ’83, Valentine put up 6.2 assists during the regular season while bumping that number up to 8.7 in the playoffs. The same story occurred during the 1984 season, which saw Darnell rack up 5.8 assists a night only to see that average increase to 8.4. Those two postseason exhibitions in sharing are impressive enough to have him sitting at seventh and eight all-time for postseason assists averages. To this day, he still holds the franchise postseason single-game record for assists (15) in a semifinal battle with the rival Lakers back in 1983 and is fifth all-time in postseason assists (161).

    Schonely Speaks:
"Had great legs. Huge thighs. We always used to say he got his thighs at "Thighs 'R' Us". Stayed in the community. Outstanding player, and everybody loved him."

Darnell was one of my favorite point guards til Porter showed up; he was an underrated role player.

with all due respect to Darnell, this isn't much of a contest. perhaps he'd have done better in the first round had he not faced Clyde. i notice, as of my vote, Clyde was leading 92 percent to 8 percent. again, with all due respect to Darnell, was he the one here who actually voted for himself over Clyde?!

I have to agree with this. It's like the vaunted #1 seed against the underdog #16 seed. A #16 still has never dethroned Goliath and I don't see it happening in this matchup either. Clyde was amazing. On any given night he was a threat to score 40, grab 15 boards or hand out 10 assists. Whatever the situation called for, he was able to adapt his game towards and get it done for the team. Also, he was one of the nicest and classiest players we've ever had here who absolutely loved the fan base.

Does Darnell have a sweet nickname like "The Glide"? Didn't think so. Drexler all the way!

*BTW, I had the chance to meet Mr. Valentine at an event that featured former Blazer players, it was in Astoria, OR (near my hometown on the coast) years ago and he was a very personable individual. I may have voted for him if he wasn't up against the Glide.

Darnell was a great player in his own right and I loved how he elevated his game when the situation called for it but to think he's a better Blazer than Clyde is just silly. He may have had a chance to get out of the first round but got paired up against quite possibly the most likable and talented Blazer of all-time.

I think Allen loves this team but I also think he has too many passions as well. I like that he seems to have a coach and GM he trusts but we know how quickly that can change. Plus I am not sure I believe in Stotts and Olshey.

I love the Grit and Grind, and I love the Spurs timeless play. I think if the Spurs get to the finals, they will beat the heat, but they won''t beat the Grizzlies easily, and the Grizz can''t beat the Heat. I know it''s weird.
