Here's an 11 minute video that not only shows off Nolan's handles, shooting ability and athleticism but shows off his personality as well. In a way he kinda reminds me of Channing Frye and I think Rip city is really going to embrace him.

Seems like a great kid. I just wish I could have seen some PASSES in those highlights and a little less showboating after the shots. We need a point guard in Portland, not another Patty Mills. I really hope he develops into a great NBA PG.

I told you not to sleep on this kid D Double. This kid is a baller, with the heart of a lion. It wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if Nate,[who by the way has a pretty good relationship with Coach K from the Games],reached out to Coach about this kid a while ago. Im wondering now which buck up pg is going to be ousted. Armon or Patty ?

Oh I forgot. Any ELLIOT WILLIAMS who is a stud defender. Portland is loaded with guards, and needs to address the Center and Power Forward spots.

I agree Dan,but what i think  sets this kid apart from Armon and Patty is his pedigree. The has a Champion mentality. Its why we loved Steve Blake. He was cut from championship cloth with Maryland. Although Juan Dixon, who was his teammate, and who also had a short stint with the Blazers, fell off. So it realistically could go either way. He by far has better handles than any of the guards we have now.Is more explosive than all the guards we currently have. Has good size. And transitioned to the point effortlessly for Duke when they needed him.Other than Elliott, i dont see much competition for the back up spot. Even Williams, who is crazy athletic, has yet to show us he can play the back up point.Whoever makes the spot, will be the one who gives Felton the most problems. One things for sure, i dig the options we now have.

    ---It's in his Genes:
Son of the late Derek Smith, an NBA player and asst. Coach
    ---He's intelligent off the court:
He was on the National Honors Society at Oak Hill Academy.
"My dream is to play in the NBA, but if it doesn't happen,
I'll always have that Duke degree under my belt."-Nolan Smith
    ---He's used to leading:
Student body president at Oak Hill Academy.
    ---He's been consistently talented:
              He was a McDonalds All-American.
---He'll have a higher basketball IQ:
He played in college for four years.
    ---He'll be EXTREMELY fundamentally sound:
              He played under Coach K.
    ---His achievements speak for themselves:
He was ACC player of the year
              He was 1st team all-ACC
              He was All-American 1st team
    ---Fans like him:
He was Voted "Premier player of College basketball" by fans
(Over Fredette, Sullinger, Barnes, and Singler)
Picked 1st team All-American by Fox Sports
I think he'll play 2nd PG, Patty will play 3rd PG, Armon will be gone, and Williams will be playing 3rd SG.

Is anyone else as bothered by all of the talk that Smith can play the 2?  Really??  The skillset may be there, the heart too...but the kid is barely cresting 6'!  C'mon.  Ludicrous at the NBA level.  Ludicrous.  You're redefining "small ball" here.

If his game translates to this next level, Smith will be a substantial upgrade at the back-up 1 behind Felton.  IMO, that is both a reasonable and realistic expectation as this kid has game.

I agree BDawg. He certainly proved that he could play the point at Duke. Batum i hear will be playing the two spot this season as well.Which means he's going to have to put the ball on the floor more.

The potential of a Triple Threat Batum is as exciting for me as GO making a successful return to the floor.  I've said it a thousand times here, Nic needs to develop that part of his game in order to realize his potential.  If not, he will never be anything more than what we've already seen...his value plateaued.  He would be wise to come out with his hair on fire when basketball resumes, with contract negotiations around the bend.

I like Smith at the 1 predominantly, but do believe he could play some 2, depending on opponent and/or individual match-ups/circumstances.  Just not buying he can play extended minutes there, not at this level anyway.  That said, I do see a "quiet assassin" quality in this kid...one of many things this Blazer roster is needing

Thats the beauty of this kids game BDawg,he doesnt look easily shook. Of course, i used to think that there was no stage to big for Rudy because of his international play. I watched  Nolan pull Duke up by the bootstraps when they needed him to play the point. The boy is a gamer. He may switch to the two guard on D at times, because the Monta's and other big 2's will post up Patty or even Felton. I also think that he's alot more athletic than given credit for. In the end, im more impressed with his cerebral game. If we're lucky,we snagged us a mini Grant Hill.

He and Ray Felton have taken care of our PG position for several years. They both have the ACC pedigree of SMART basketball, WINNING basketball and TEAM basketball.  LA, GW NB, GO, MC and WM are going to fall in LOVE with the way these guys will get them the ball in the right places at the right times. If EW comes back from his knee surgery healthy and we can add another solid PF...we're going to be GOOD.

    Hey yall !

We keep posting negative things about Patty Mills ? does anybody in RIP CITY even know the history of this young man ? all he needs is minutes just like Steph Currey , aron Brooks etc etc. this guy led a national team as an 18 year old and made NBA superstars look slow ! nobody has done this before at 18 and barely feet tall. he then goes back to ST Mary's and more that holds his own against so called higher quality teams and oponants . defence .. if you are guarding quality it doesn't matter who you are so why is it that no one else is canned ? gee does steph currey , ty lawson or brooks play D ? so why bother this kid, he handles himself really well if you ask me.
I know this guy will silence all the haters one day ...I get the feeling that most of the feedback comes from Patrick not having a father or uncle or whoever that played in the NBA or for a prestegious college ? give the guy the minutes and the actual responsibilty instead of holding the reigns for him.  CONSISTANT minutes and not just until so and so is over an injury ? if not just trade him to somone that actually wants the guy .... which is what I would rather see . I've followed this kid from when he was 16yrs old and running an AIS team in the second highest league in Australia ...let me tell you it far outways the division 1 college ball in the USA ! and he would have 30 point 10 assist game back then.  this kid is the real deal ..don't judge a kid for what college he played for and what conference he played in judge the player based on REAL oportunities and responsibilities and I think you will find we have a similar guard to Golden State.

Against the CP3's, and the Brooks',and the Brandon Jennings type pg's, he'll definitely get his defensive shine on.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens at training camp ? even last year he put up better numbers than Armon and Babbit but was still overlooked and had to work his butt off for a spot . considering it was his first training camp that was injury free , Patty came in with a bright attitude and just wouldn't give up.  hopefully he can keep the fire stoked and have an impact .?
