Decisions on greg oden and andre miller must be made by the portland trail blazers very soon. With the end of the NBA Finals, the opportunity arises to get both players under contract before the meat of the offseason really begins. The question quickly becomes whether the team is going to head in the same direction as when Greg Cho was the general manager.

For Miller, the Blazers control a team option that would pay him just over $7.8 million for next year. The team has until June 29 to decide whether or not to put that option into play, and it could be a deal that another team gets to make the decision about. If the Blazers were to trade Miller away before that deadline, he could be used as salary compensation in any deal. The new team could then deny his contract if he wasn't in the plans.

The reason that deal might work well, is because it could allow another franchise to dump a contract that they might not like, with the full intent on declining Miller's option to get further under the salary cap. The Blazers could also simply decide to put the option into play and keep Miller as their starting point guard for the next NBA season.

Things are a little trickier with Oden, because the franchise has to commit to holding on to an asset that might never pan out. The Blazers have the option to give Oden a qualifying offer of about $8.8 million for next year; a deal that would keep Oden under contract if no other team wanted to try and sign him. He is what is called a restricted free agent, because another franchise can offer him a deal that the Blazers would then have the opportunity to match. Will the new Blazers GM decide to match a large contract offer though?

It had really looked like both Miller and Oden were going to be retained under Cho, and maybe he lost his job because some of the brass for the Blazers wanted to go in a different direction. There are just a few days left to make that final decision though, and it could pave the way for action during the 2011 NBA Draft on June 23 or set the Blazers up to compete next season with roughly the same roster.

Trade rights to kostas Papanikolau and 2 2nds for the 13th pick. If mavs are planning on drafting an international player to stash, we might as well give kostas to mavs, because theyre trying to clear space to get dh12 or cp3 to play for them. The...
