June 7th was the anniversary of Petro's passing. He died in a car accident at the age of 28. After being dealt away from the Blazers mid-way through the 90-91 season, he thrived in a starting role with the New Jersey Nets, earning Third-Team All-NBA honors after the 92-93 season where he averaged 22 a night on 52% shooting. Thanks to the peeps over at DIME for bringing this anniversary to light. What was your favorite Petro memory?

Great post!!! I will never forget how he fueled one of our other great playoff comeback victory's against the Phoenix Suns. I had so much hope for him in Portland and then he was gone. I was so mad when they traded him. He reminds me of Rudy in a way. Nice tribute and I miss watching him tear up the bottom of the net.

    peace out,
    daddy

He really was Jermaine O'Neal before Jermaine O'Neal. When most fans think of the Blazers trading a young player who hasn't developed, they automatically think of J.O. and how he turned around the Pacers, but Petro was that player 9 years prior. So the next time you don't want a young player traded, say it will just be like the Drazen Petrovic situation all over again because when he was moved, he ended up as one of the best pure scorers in the NBA.

I got my picture taken with Petro when I was 7 at the blazers fanfest.  Oddly enough, I watched ESPN's 30 for 30 piece last night about Petro and Vlade Divac's splintered friendship.  The film is entitled "Once Brothers", and it is a very poignant look at the conflict betwixt Croatia and Serbia in the early 90's.  If you have not seen it, try to watch it; it is extremely well done!

I have also seen that 30/30 piece and thought it to be very eye opening.  Definately a must see.  I remember Petro as being very mechanical, but more than that, being a player that played with heart and as if each minute on the floor could be his last.  THAT is what I have missed most about Drazen, that fire for the game that is quickly becoming extinct in todays NBA.  Miss ya Petro.

It would have been nice if the blazers had kept him, but the roster didn't allow it, I guess. I was happy though that he got moved to a team where he could show what he had to give. The man's heart was 100% basketball and all he wanted to do was to play and contribute to his team. I happen to have a friend who is Serbian and even with all the problems between Serbians and Croatians he loved Drazen and always has something about him to mention when we're talking about basketball.
He sure is missed by many.

What I think was awesome about him is he was and is a total legend in Europe. He was the kind of player that wanted to be great and pushed himself to get there. He was a knock down shooter and had great hustle. Definitely a credit to the Blazers that we drafted him and then a bad move to trade him but her was playing behind Clyde and Portland has a habit of making players expendable when they play behind a super star. I have to say he was one of my favorite players all time because he had the drive to live out his dream and potential.

Imagine if we would have kept him and have Sabonis on the roster at the same time!

    PG- Porter/Petrovic/Young
    SG- Drexler/Petrovic
    SF- Kersey/Robinson
    PF- Williams/Robinson/Bryant
    C- Sabonis/Duckworth/Cooper

    DYNASTY!

Good Lord that man could shoot! He was just stopping and popping from 3 against the Dream Team!

Right now, the most realistic is Asik. If Houston pursue D12, sign and trade JJ and a couple second round picks, maybe Joel Freeland or somebody for Asik.

Nah, Washington would just sign him themselves, save them a pick. Also, no way JJ is worth a lottery pick. Oladipo would be great, for pretty much any team in the NBA. I don''t think it''s possible to get him though. Should focus on getting a defe...

Jermaine O''Neal, Drazen, Z-Bo, Sheed (I know he was already a star but still). Also Drazen was buried under Drexler and Porter.

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.

Special K, aren''t you a cereal? And yes, Batum is expensive, but I think he''s worth it. Why would you take someone who isn''t is as good, just for less money. Then why don''t we take the worst possible player and pay him the least possible amoun...
