You Be The GM: Andre Miller

Oregon Live does their annual You Be The GM posts and I like to piggyback off of that and see what the fans here think and compare it to the OLive results. Up first is Andre Miller.

Photo & stats courtesy of OregonLive.com
He finished second on the team with 11 double-doubles, scored in double figures 53 times, including eight games with at least 20 points, and passed out double digits in assists 15 times this season. He averaged 14.8 points and 5.5 assists and 32 minutes in six playoff games against the Dallas Mavericks.

As if he is defying Father Time, Andre Miller just continues to get better with age. Even at age 34, even with a lack of athletic ability and even without a reliable long-range jump shot, Dre put together a better overall and efficient campaign than his first one with the Trail Blazers. And frankly he doesn't show any signs of slowing down. But the Blazers do need to find a younger option at lead guard before the fountain of youth drives up on Andre.

According to HoopsHype, Andre Miller has a team option which has not yet been picked up for next season that would pay him $7.8 million. With no other starting point guard on the roster, the Blazers need Dre, bottom line. Patty and Armon show potential but aren't yet ready to grasp the reigns of the offense. Do the Blazers cash in on Miller's expiring deal with the hopes of adding a point guard through other means or is the risk of having no other viable point guard too much to take?

To me there is no dispute at all that we pick up Dre's option. I think he definitely still has got it. Last season was incredible for Dre and we would never have done nearly as well as we did without him. Obviously Dre isn't our point guard of the future and we should probably trade him now while he still has value and some years left. So I definitely see him going before the trade deadline, but we definitely have to pick up that option without question.

No debate short term.  The Blazers must pick up his option.  If there is a move to be made in the future involving Dre, I believe it will most likely happen before next years deadline.  As I've mentioned in posts in the past however, there are ALWAYS a great many variables in play that we, as fans, are not aware of...this year those variables are further complicated/multiplied with the looming CBA and potential work stoppage.

We could theoretically, trade Dre before the deadline to pick up his option runs out and the other team getting him back could fail to pick up his option, making him a free agent. I'd love to see us try and work out a deal like that on draft night. They get salary relief, we get the player we coveted and then re-sign him in the summer with part of our mid-level exception.

Definite stay. Not only do we not have a starting point guard, but Dre is able to take over a game when he sees everyone else isn't getting any production. He is a pass first point guard and literally facilitates the ball. Thats whether he has the ball in his hands or not. He dissects the defense with his head rather then his athleticism. We can't be willing to let him go so soon.

The problem with trading any player at the deadline is how they fit in within such a time crunch. As good as Camby and Wallace were after being traded, its clear that an off-season to get to know the offense system is what is needed. The most critical position for learning the system is PG. I'm for trading Miller, but if a new guy comes in to run the show, he wont be comfortable with the system when it matters most. Gerald showed that even 2 months with the team isnt enough to really get comfortable, he was still uncertain with his role in the playoffs. So it would be a risk in the playoffs next year if a new guy with cold feet steps in.

perhaps he should call ron artest and see if he can introduce him to his anger management counselor, because dre's attitude is about $#!^^% as his jumper......

Cmeese, you want to trade Aldridge too? Seems like you only care that the championships are under the Blazer name, and you''re willing to throw anyone under the bus to get it.

I would agree LMA is a decent defender but his help defense and team defense needs a lot of work. It is in these areas that Bosh really separates himself from LMA and it is because of that he is a better player than LMA despite not putting the sam...

Splitter would fill our needs the best. Pekovic isn''t great defensively but a solid rebound and a muscle man who would do decent. Al Jefferson is a less polished LMA with not as good defence and his rebounding is decreasing.

I was looking at some shooting stats and came across a very very alarming stat. LMA was the league leader in FGA from 16-23 feet. Not only was he the leader he was lead by a mile. His 7.3 attempts from this distance easily outpaced Demar Derozan w...

Sug I would start with him outscoring Wesley Matthews. He also needs to get his FTA up and his FG% up and cut down the turnovers.
