    During 2011, Patty Mills...
    Exceeded Expectations (28)
    Met Expectations (15)
    Failed To Meet Expectations (2)

We're going to start something new this offseason and review each player's season, how they performed, whether they met expectations or not and if you'd like to see them in uniform for the Blazers to start the 2011-12 season. Up next is our backup point guard and team, Patty Mills.

The Three Goggles, Rudy Fernandez, and team chemistry. What do those three things all have in common? Patty Mills. But they never could have turned out the way each did had Mills decided not to attend Trail Blazers training camp. Coming off a Summer League which saw rookie point guard Armon Johnson outplay him and with three other point guards already on the roster, many were wondering what Patty's motives could possibly be; he was the 16th man on a 15-man roster. But he reiterated time and time again that he wanted to play for the Blazers, because they drafted him and if it didn't work out he had a backup plan, which many assumed was a bevvy of international offers to choose from. And when Jeff Pendergraph unexpectedly went down with a torn ACL on October 7th in Utah, a roster spot opened up and the Trail Blazers quickly ensured Mills would be a member of the 2010-11 squad.

The off the court impact Patty brought to the club was invaluable and well documented. He started the Three Goggles phenomena in Rip City as a joke to teammate Rudy Fernandez who needed glasses to see from far away. Speaking of Fernandez, it was Mills who took him under his wing and started one of the all-time great bromances in Trail Blazers history. Rudy went from wanting out to not wanting to leave in the bat of an eye due to Patty's comradeship. He was the ringleader behind the Blazers Twitter boom, getting Aldridge, Batum, Camby, then-Blazer Dante Cunningham, Johnson, and Matthews to all join him in on the social media craze where they would joke and banter back and forth for fans to see worldwide. On the court, irregular playing time didn't deter him from being the first one off the bench after a timeout to encourage his mates on the floor with a high-five or slap on the backside. The bond between those 15 guys grew tighter together while simultaneously bringing the fans closer to the team, all thanks to Patty.

Known mostly for his intangibles related to being a fantastic teammate, many forget he performed well when giving the chance to play as well. After Armon struggled to adapt to NBA defenses during the end of November, it was Mills who gained control of the backup minutes behind Andre Miller on December 1st. And while his play was sporadic at times, he was able to keep that role, no matter how big or small it was, as his own throughout the remainder of the season. When Coach McMillan needed a chance of pace, Patty was the first one off the bench to fulfill that role. Patty, who can play at breakneck speeds, did a solid job keeping the ball under control, only committing 1 turnover once ever 12.6 minutes while he was on the floor. And for a team desperate for outside shooters, Patty strapped on the Three Goggles 47 times over the course of 2011, fourth most on the team while shooting them at a 35.3% clip, second only to Wesley Matthews. Overall, Patty averaged 5.5 points in only 12.2 minutes of game action, showing his contributions run further than towel waving.

As evidenced by the graphic above, Patty's output was at its highest when he received the most playing time, which was in the month of January. Highlighted by two 14 point performances in the span of three days against the Rockets, Mills was the catalyst in sparking a comeback win in Houston back on January 5th. There's no secret, the Blazers need bench scoring as well as a reliable backup point guard. Could their answer to both needs lie in the Aussie speedster known to his teammates as Patty Cakes?

10 to 15 years from now fans may not remember off the top their head who we played in the playoffs or how many regular season wins were amassed but they will remember the 2011 season as the year of the Three Goggles. Everyone was throwing up the goggles after a made trifecta in the Rose Garden. You bought the cardboard ones to wear on your face or got creative and designed your own. And we can all thank Patty Mills for starting this trend.

    Three Goggles Mania

Let all of that information soak in for a moment Rip City. Looking back, how well did Patty perform as a spark off the bench? Was his positive impact on the team's chemistry and three point ability enough to warrant bringing him back in the fall?

Thinking back to September, the fact that Patty got extended playing time at all this season is amazing. That alone exceeded my expectations. I was really down on his game during summer league but he proved that his 3 point shooting can be a niche in this league. Bring him back!

I completely forget about Patty making the team due to JP's ACL tear...that feels like ages ago. All in all, I was content with patty's performance this season. I would like to see him get more playing time just to see if the player we saw dominate team USA is still in there somewhere. I'd hate to not re-sign him only to see him tear it up on another roster.

Gotta love those 3 goggles!  Even though you don't play much Patty, you are a great motivator and you can totally rock the beard.  Lets look forward to a awesome season full of 3 goggles next year.

They absolutely should bring Patty back. He's Mr. Chemistry for this team, great with the media and the fans, and highly entertaining.

He is great for the fans and a great character. His play isn't all that bad, he can shoot the 3 very well and he always is a huge energy player for us. So I say we keep him and he met/exceeded expectations (not a lot of minutes and that probably would remain the case).

I think even if we keep Patty on to be our third stringer, he needs to be here. Every team needs a guy like him who rallies the team and won't gripe about a lack of playing time.

Beginning of the season I thought the spot would be Armon's, but Patty pulled through and is playing some good ball.

for me He should stay and fight with Armon to be our second PG and also He brings a lot of good energy which is  also important for the hole team ! :-)

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
