You Be The GM: Marcus Camby
Stay - We have no other centers (9)
     69%
Go - Oden will be back, cash in on the expiring contract (4)
     31%
Oregon Live does their annual You Be The GM posts and I like to piggyback off of that and see what the fans here think and compare it to the OLive results. Up first is Marcus Camby.

He kicked off the postseason with a monster performance on the glass, grabbing 18 rebounds to go with five assists and two blocks in 29 minutes, but only had one more game of double-digit rebounds against Tyson Chandler and the Mavericks. In six playoff games Camby averaged 3.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 blocks in 27.8 minutes per game.

Marcus loves Portland a lot. The fans were a huge reason why he signed a two-year extension with the team in the spring of 2010. And the fans love Marcus. He's a great defender and rebounder, encourages his team and is an overall likable guy both on and off the court. But "Uncle Cam" is 37 and will be 38 by the time the playoffs roll around next year and the numbers saw a strong decline, especially after returning from the athroscopic knee surgery. With Oden's stats us in the air and Chris Johnson still learning the game, Marcus is the only option the team has and talented centers like MC do not grow on trees.
According to HoopsHype, Marcus Camby has one more year left on his deal that will pay him $12.8 million in 2011-12. With no other reliable option at center, the Blazers need Camby until further notice. Chris Johnson is young and Greg Oden needs to show he can play prolonged periods of time before the Blazers feel comfortable playing without Camby. Do the Blazers cash in on Camby's expiring deal with the hopes of adding a center through other means or is the risk of having no other viable center too much to take?

I'd say this is a no brainer, but I can understand the thinking that he should be traded while still valuable, otherwise he walks for nothing probably. I love Camby, he's a great blocker and a savage rebounder. He gives us a presence that we definitely need on the court and his veteran leadership is something we couldn't succeed without. I love me some Camby cakes.

Good seeing you on the boards 6thMan!

As for Camby, it basically boils down to winning right now or in the future. If we keep him, we're set for next year and a year or two afterward if he re-signs instead of retires. Or if we decide to move him, we take a risk of going to battle without a center (I guess it depends on what the team would hypothetically get in return or got out of the free agency sweepstakes) but get something in return while he's still on our roster much as we did with Przybilla. It's a tough call and why Rich Cho is in charge. Whatever he decides to do, I'm behind it.

    Thanks!

That's the other thing, we have to really think of how to handle it from a GM's perspective. Its hard to not just think of next season and really think of the future too. If we don't think we can make a title run next year, I don't think Camby is in our plans realistically. We'll see what Rich Cho does, he has quite a few difficult decisions to make.

As much as it pains me, we need to move Marcus. It sucks even more so given the fact he loves it out here in Portland and how many athletes say that? It's nothing personal but we just can't let him ride off into the sunset without getting anything in return. Like you said Blazers6thMan, if we aren't in title contention next year, it's not worth it. I'd love to send Camby off with a championship in Portland but I'm not so sure how realistic those dreams are. It sucked giving up Przybilla but look at how well Wallace has turned out. To me, this is how we become title contenders. Take advantage of our owner's deep pockets. He wants to spend, so let's use it. Trade expiring contracts for borderline all-star players and build a cast of talent similar to that of the 99 and 2000 Blazers. A lot of good players coming together as one to be dominant.

The answer HAS to be stay. Until we have another center not named Greg Oden lined up to be our 5 man, then we have no other choice. There's no way we can deal Camby and not have another center. LA got worn down this year because we already had too little depth at C. If we traded MC and didn't have a backup plan in place, LA will get burnt out before the new year.

I think he should stay. GO will not be back at the beginning of the season, Marcus will be rested and fresh.  Then, when Greg is back in late Dec/early Jan, Marcus can back him up and continue to mentor both GO and Chris J. Also, Chris can back up LA.

sign Iggy for 8-9M, Batum at the two, and Wesley off the bench! Draft Steven Adams (who loves contact, grew up playing rug-bee). Sounds NICE!

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
