Who do you think Portland should draft with the 21st pick. I've heard a lot of rumors about drafting the "point gaurd of the future" in Nolan Smith. Would Nolan Smith be a good pick for Portland?

He would be fine but I say draft Demetry McCamey instead with the second rounder and take Kenneth Faried with #21

Its tough to say...with the 21st pick its so hard to tell what will be left. 20 teams get to pick and try to get their next player of the future, who knows if Nolan will be available, or who else will! He does have skill, but so do Armon and Elliot and Patty...its so tough to see who will develop and under what circumstances.

I like Nolan Smith. He's sneaky athletic, can shoot from deep, played 4 seasons under Coach K and has big game experience. I don't think he's going to "WOW!" anyone but to me his worst case scenario is our future backup point guard for the next decade, something we've needed since Greg Anthony has been here. But I wouldn't be surprised if he has a Jameer Nelson type career and with the 21st pick, teams could do A LOT worse than that.

Chad Ford at ESPN.com has Smith ranked 32nd in this year's class and he doesn't crack Ford's first mock draft, at least not the first round. Not that he's the end-all-be-all of the draft prognosticators, but he's probably the most dialed in guy when it comes to the draft, so it makes me wonder about any team, let alone the Blazers, taking Smith with a first round pick.

Problem with Nolan is that he's really not a point guard. Heck, you could argue that Kyle Singler played the point as often as Smith, who most consider and undersided 2 guard.

Most of the mocks I visit have Nolan in that 25-30 range. As you mentioned Ford has him 32nd while NBAdraft.net has him 26th and Draft Express has him 23rd, so a lot of varying opinions from three credible sources. But a good point you brought up that I forgot is that he does have a lot of combo guard to his game. In fact, DX and NBADraft have Smith listed as a PG/SG hybrid.

Looking at the weaknesses from his NBADraft profile, it appears he'll have to become a full-time point guard as a non-explosive 6-3 shooting guard won't cut it:
Weaknesses: Smith's biggest obstacle at the next level will be trying to create separation between him and his defender ... He lacks explosiveness, and therefore takes longer to execute his move and get by his defender... He's not a dynamic athlete, which limits his upside considering he already struggles in the one on one game... Though he shot a very respectable 39% from downtown last season, he will need to continue improving his outside game in order to make him more of a threat offensively ... Defensively he might have trouble guarding NBA 2 guards, limiting his services ...
But I do love this about him:
Defensively his best attributes revolve around his length, IQ and effort ...

Nice Idea but I think the TWolves trade is very lobsided in our favor

Derrick Williams and Budinger are proven players in the league. Claver and Freeland are not

Hawes was playing nice this season and would be a good pick up imo ...

I love the Grit and Grind, and I love the Spurs timeless play. I think if the Spurs get to the finals, they will beat the heat, but they won''t beat the Grizzlies easily, and the Grizz can''t beat the Heat. I know it''s weird.
