    During 2011, Brandon Roy...
    Exceeded Expectations (5)
     10%
    Met Expectations (15)
     29%
    Failed To Meet Expectations (31)
     61%

We're going to start something new this offseason and review each player's season, how they performed, whether they met expectations or not and if you'd like to see them in uniform for the Blazers to start the 2011-12 season. Up next is our seasoned veteran, Brandon Roy.

Injuries are nothing new to Brandon Roy. We all knew about his surgery to repair torn meniscus in his left knee during his Junior year as at Washington and the injured left heel which took 25 games away from his rookie year. But Brandon had always bounced back with a stronger performance. He was the face of the franchise: Rookie of the Year, three consecutive All-Star appearances, a two-time All-NBA performer. Nothing could seem to stop our Superman, or so we all thought until the afternoon of April 11th, 2010. During the second quarter against the Lakers, Brandon Roy was defending Ron Artest when he felt something wrong in his right knee. It turned out he tore meniscus and required surgery to repair it. Everyone was reporting Roy would miss the entire playoffs. Everyone except Brandon Roy who found his cape, draped it over his #7 home jersey and returned to action just eight days later to lead the Blazers to a Game Four win over the Suns. Entering the 2011 season, fans couldn't decide whether Roy had provided another magic act or if he had partaken in one to many surgeries.

Initially all seemed right with the world as Brandon jumped out of the gate in October, leading the Blazers to a 3-0 start and doing so by upping his career averages. But then the grind of the NBA season started to take a toll on Roy and his knees. His game suffered, the team suffered. During a stretch in December, Roy and the Blazers had hit rock bottom. A seven-game losing streak had taken Rip City by surprise and their star player was finally showing the effects of multiple surgeries to both of his knees. After December 15th's contest in Dallas, Roy knew he needed a break and would end up missing the next 30 games due to chronic knee pain. Blazer Nation worldwide was stunned. MRI's revealed no additional damage. There was no more meniscus to remove. Not even microfracture knee surgery could fix this problem. If surgery couldn't put Brandon back together again, would he ever be the same?

Eventually, Brandon would return to the lineup, in a reserve role, on February 23rd against the Lakers. And although he had his vintage moments which were glimpses of the past shining brightly in the Rose Garden, such as his game-tying three-point shot against the Nuggets or his 21 point performance against the Mavericks, his numbers continued to decline and his play became sporadic. For so many years he was used to playing with the ball in his hands, able to make any play for himself or his teammates. But now the wear and tear on the knees had taken away his explosiveness and a new role of coming off the bench and playing with the ball out of his hands was being asked of him. It was not a pretty year for B-Roy statistically and the drastic decline can be seen courtesy basketball-reference.com:

Bad knees or not, Brandon Roy is still synonymous with revitalizing basketball in the Rose City. There are no shortage of #7 Roy jerseys in the crowd and his entrance into the game garners one of the louder roars of any player. Although the number of doubters has increased, they'll just have to deal with it. Brandon Roy's not going anywhere. His MAX contract, which started in the fall of 2010 runs through the 2015 season. The combination of his shaky health history and money owed over a long duration will scare teams away from trading for him, but that's fine by Rip City. And while the days of consistent 20, 5 and 5 nights seem to be only memories from the past, Brandon can still contribute to this franchise. What was one of the biggest bug-a-boos for the Blazers this year? Bench scoring. If The Natural can mold his game that meshes well with his body, he could be a dangerous weapon off the pine. He doesn't need to be the distributor or facilitator any more. All we need is buckets, buckets and more buckets! Looking ahead, if B can find a way to score 12-15 points a night in around 24 minutes, the Trail Blazers will have their latest 6th Man of the Year candidate.

Brandon Roy has a knack for the dramatic and performing in the clutch. Everyone remembers his three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to beat Houston. The 52 point game against Phoenix. And coming back just eight days after knee surgery in Game Four of last year's Phoenix series. But Rip City had no clue what they were in for before Game Four. Roy poured in 18 fourth-quarter points to revitalize a team on the brink of elimination. Relive one of the most remarkable performances in franchise history here.

Brandon Roy Scores 18 In The 4th

Let all of that information soak in for a moment Rip City. Looking back, how well did Brandon perform, especially considering the circumstances? Did his Game Four performance show that he's still got it or will the knees be too much of a problem in the future?

All things considered, this year was much worse than I could have imagined for Brandon. I loved his comeback in Game Four but he missed so much of the season and when he came back it was hard to find a role for him on the team. I know Kobe can't have much left in those knees and CP is playing with battered knees, so hopefully Roy can find out how to play with hurt knees and still make an impact.

I hope the organization and Brandon really think about the future because we all know the player he can be when his healthy and when his mind clear but, I just hope he thinks about life after basketball because I want Brandon to walk away from the game on his own will instead of a career ending injury. I know Brandon will be ready next season and the team will have a role for him where he can be successful but, Brandon and the Blazers need to think about long term.

How would you feel to have double-knee surgery? Just as Brandon said after game four, he didnt even know if he would come back to play basketball again! Originally I was saying that Brandon should not have come back and he should've just waited til the 2011-12 season. It was extremely difficult for a 3-time all star to come back and play a deep bench position. Give him this summer and a chance to work with the new team next year and he should be better. He showed he still has it left in him when his mind is in the right spot. The less the criticism and the more supportive fans are towards him, the more confident he will be out there. Knees are second to his mentality. Game 4 showed that.

I understand what your saying I for one hope Brandon has a long and injury free career all i'm saying is after a situation like his you have to think about the big picture I don't want Brandon to be that player that has to save us night after night like Game 4 yes it was something I'll never forget but it was also the reason he had to have double-knee surgery because he had to carry us for so many years I just hope the Blazers get some players to take pressure off of Roy & LA so they will have long and productive Blazer careers.

In the past, through all of his adversity, Brandon's heart always has taken center stage, making him a fan favorite and the catalyst of this overachieving basketball team.  I for one, am a huge Roy supporter, as evidenced by my avatar.  However, I am a fan of this team and organization first and foremost, and will support whatever decision is deemed appropriate in the coming months with regard to Brandon.

My vote for "failing to meet expectations" had everything to do with numbers on a stat sheet (and the impact of the absence of those numbers on his team) and NOTHING to do with Brandon 'the man'.  Personally, I would like to see his knickname transition from 'the Natural', to 'the Example'...because, that best sums up his contributions to this organization, league, and community, if such a summation can be done in just one word.

I would've agreed until his comments after game 3. Yeah, he "backed them up" in game 4 by putting on a great show. But I refuse to excuse a lack of professionalism just because you score enough points. It's the same reason I dislike Kobe and Lebron.

I hate to say this, but I was a little relieved when I heard that Roy was out indefinitely. I somewhat hoped that it meant he would be out for the season and they would re-evaluate in the summer. Why, you ask? Because the one thing this franchise does well is work around season-ending injuries. The thing it does worst is re-incorporate players mid-season.

Given that problem, when Brandon was made active again, he got minutes simply because he was wearing that #7 jersey. I'm not convinced he played backup point guard any better than Patty Mills could've. How about a bench looking something like Mills, Roy, Batum, Aldridge/Wallace (since we don't actually have a backup 4), and Johnson. Notice that keeps Rudy from playing too many minutes?

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that Roy (and Rudy) have too much of a sense of entitlement and Nate is allowing that. I want to see every Blazer earn the minutes he gets, whether or not he's ever been an All-Star.

@ D_pickett...completely agree.  I too took exception to Roy's conduct following Game 3.  Whether he sought an ear out, or the ear approached him...inconsequential.  What mattered was what he did with that ear once he had it.  Completely unprofessional and, in my opinion, conduct unbecoming a Blazer.  One only has to look as far as Roy's backcourt partner to find a better example of how to handle disappointment and frustration professionally.  That said, basketball players are people, and people make mistakes.  Roy's have been few and far between and most, if not all, could be eliminated if he wasn't so honest with a microphone in his face.
