    Via Dime Magazine-
No post players took bigger leaps this year than LaMarcus Aldridge and Zach Randolph. For LA, it was about taking control of a team that desperately needed leadership once Greg Oden and Brandon Roy were both lost to injuries. For Z-Bo, it was about changing a perception that he was selfish, a guy who never passed once the ball came down to him.
After Roy went down in December, Aldridge answered the bell, averaging 23.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in the next four months, crossing a line between effort and hate-to-lose in that span, something I’m not sure Randolph had ever done in Portland. Randolph came into the league with unquestioned scoring touch, but “leader” isn’t something you expect to pop up in a game of Z-Bo word association. And it’s Aldridge’s continued production and potential that makes this an easy call over Randolph. Four years younger, Aldridge has flourished playing the third-most minutes per game (39.6) in the league with a newfound confidence that the Blazers are his team. Even after the best basketball of his career this year, it could still be too early to judge his ceiling.
At only 6-9, Randolph out-rebounds and out-muscles the 6-11 Aldridge (12.2 rpg vs. 8.8) in the post. He’s always had a soft touch around the basket and seems unstoppable down low. When Rudy Gay and his 19.8 points per game went down for the season with a shoulder injury, Randolph stepped up his workload and rose to the occasion. With the Grizz playing as well as they’re playing right now, it’s not unthinkable to say that they could come out of the West. Not getting ahead of myself, it’s just not unthinkable. And yes, both guys have been asked to carry a sizable portion of their respective team’s load, especially in the postseason. But I’m taking Randolph in this matchup.

We've seen both power forwards up close and personal. Z-Bo was our only saving grace for a while during the middle part of the decade while LA is now the face of this franchise. It was LA's potential combined with the drafting of Greg Oden which lead the Blazers to deal Zach in the summer of 2007 to make way for the next "Twin Towers." But we all know how that story unfolded. Now, four seasons later, Aldridge has developed into a bonafide superstar, no longer satisfied living out on the perimeter and Z-Bo has become more of a complete player, leading his team without stud win Rudy Gay to at least the Conference Semi-Finals. Both plays have became team leaders and both players have lead their respected teams in the face of adversity and injury. Coming into this season, I don't think anyone would have expected either to be a Top 5 player at their position but that's just what happened. With that said though, who is better right now and who will be better in the future?

Well right now I say Z-Bo is better because his team still playing but LA not to far behind. Z-Bo a better scorer and rebounder and he lives in the paint, LA is a better shooter, more athletic and a better defender. If LA keep inproving it won't be long where he will surpass Z-Bo and any other PF in the league but thats up to LA.

Both players are in the Top 5. Z-Bo is obviously the better rebounder and scorer in the paint, but LA is more athletic, a better finisher in traffic, has more range and is better on the defensive end of the floor. Looking back, I wish we would have kept Zach and played he and LA together but that ship has sailed. Right now, I'll take LA by the smallest of margins, just because of his production compared to his supporting cast. No one else can really take the burden off of his shoulders down low. Teams don't respect CJ or Marcus on offense, so they collapse on LA. Zach has the privilege of playing alongside Marc Gasol, one of the emerging young centers in the league. Also, LA plays defense which can never be overlooked. Finally, LA is about 4 years younger, so I'd go with him for the future as well. But Z-Bo is ballin' right now and I hope they win it all now that we are out of it.

this is an interesting question, because if you went to a grizzlies' message board to answer it, you'd probably find a lot of valid arguments in favor of Zach.

i'm going to sound homerish here, but i'm going to say it's LaMarcus. Just a few reasons which put it over the top for me:

    1. LaMarcus largely does more at the pf positions -- without playing next to a guy like Marc Gasol. Gasol's presence, i believe makes life just a little easier for Zach. LaMarcus doesn't have that luxury.

    2. LaMarcus put the entire team on his shoulders for a good chunk of the season, and i'm not so sure Zach could do that.

    3. LaMarcus is just entering what should be the prime of his career and is only getting better. Zach is a very good player but, at this point in his career, he's probably not going to get much better.

so, for that and perhaps some homerism, i'm going to answer LaMarcus on the question at hand.

I think that Randolph not only has more experience, but he is a tough player. Aldridge, well he is a timid guy, he took 4-5 years to really get it going, to be as dominate as he has showed this season.
But Randolph, he is  a monster. i mean this guy laid out amoundson, he has no problem with a little bump and grind in the paint, where as Aldridge does.

They are both semi decent at midrange shots, but Aldridge takes the cake on that one, not because of what he has shown already but the remaining potential this guy carries with him, he can expand in every aspect in his game.
For now Randolph has it higher than Aldridge because the lanky tall maybe even shooting type are not in season in the nba and the way it is played majority...
but given time and more practice i think that , not only will the rest of the NBA see the benefits of the Aldridge type player, but Aldridge himself will even evolve and no matter what team he plays on, i strongly believe that he will still have the type of game he plays now.

if i had to choose, Aldridge forever, and now, lets see Randolph hit a playoff 3pt shot with a 6'11, and 2 centimeters, with a lanky red sleeved arm in yo face.....

Man you guys make me laugh.

Whenever there is talk or someone wants to trade Camby...you jump down there throats, yet you admit that LA has to carry extra wait on his shoulders cause the other bigs can't score and warrant no respect from opposition defences.

Just imagine how much more consistently dangerous LA could be if he had some help in the paint on offence.

Very well said, and I have to agree.  While LA is adding to his game and hasn't peaked yet, Zach has been residing on his proverbial plateau for years.  Next season's pudding will provide the proof.

Lamarcus better now and for the future. Z-bo is a good rebounder and takes alot of shots to get his points to where L.a has grown consistent and is becoming a even better rebounder. L.a has Heart and hustle to continue becoming a Dominant PF. Z-bo has 20pts from 20shots a game OVER RATED

Zach is a great rebounder and a pretty good scorer. He really has a high basketball IQ and knows positioning like the back of his crack pipe. I'd say Zach was easily the better player at the beginning of the season, but with LaMarcus really coming out this season, I'm not as sure. Z-Bo had a crazy playoffs run but LaMarcus did very well too. I'd say they are pretty close to even but Z-Bo has the slight advantage for now. It won't take long for LaMarcus to come out and pass him up though and he is definitely the better player in the future (probably easily by the end of next season).
