    • After losing 11 straight in Dallas from 2003-2009, Portland has split the last four in Big D
    • The Trail Blazers and Mavericks split this season’s series, 2-2. All four games were decided by eight points or fewer.
    • Dallas took the first two games at home, beating Portland 103-98 on Dec. 15 and 84-81 on Jan. 4. The Trail Blazers responded by winning both games at the Rose Garden, 104-101 on March 15 and 104-96 on April 3.
    • In four games this season, Portland shot 47.8% from the fi eld (best against any Western Conference opponent) and 30.5% from 3-point range, while Dallas shot 51.0% and 34.9%, respectively. The Trail Blazers averaged 96.8 points, 37.3 rebounds, and 20.5 assists, while the Mavericks averaged 96.0 points, 37.0 rebounds, and 23.3 assists.
    • The Trail Blazers held a 45-28 advantage in offensive rebounds and outscored Dallas in second-chance points in three of the four games (55-
    48 overall).

    Playoff Series Notes-
    • Portland and Dallas have met in the playoffs three times previously, with Portland winning two of the three series.
    • The Trail Blazers defeated the Mavericks in the First Round in 1985 (3-1) and swept them in the First Round in 1990 (3-0).
    • In the most recent series between the two teams, Dallas defeated Portland in seven games in the First Round in 2003. The Trail Blazers lost the first three games before falling just short in their attempt to be the first NBA team to come back from an 0-3 deficit to win a seven-game series.
    • The Mavericks are 1-1 in series against the Trail Blazers as the higher seed, while Portland is 1-0 as the higher seed.
    • Gerald Wallace is the only current Trail Blazer who has faced the Mavericks in the Playoffs, having faced Dallas three times as a member of the
    Sacramento Kings (2002, 2003 and 2004).

After taking a minute to let all of that season and playoff history digest, how do you feel about the series now? Do you feel any more confident or a little more worried? Let's do this Rip City!

Alright, most that know me well know I make bold statements, and generally are somewhat correct, until the Blazers let me down.  That being said, I really think Blazers in 6, but I voted Blazers in 5, because they SHOULD win in 5.  However, I think they won't care so much in Game 5, being in the position to eliminate their opponent, but would rather win in the RG, so Game 5 we probably won't see the effort.

However, my bold statement is this.

If the Trail Blazers lose this season series to the Dallas Mavericks, it would be a huge missed opportunity and a big embarrassment.

Doesn't matter if it's in 4,5,6, or 7 games.  Does not matter to me.  But, there really is no excuse, and let me explain why.

First, the Mavericks are the best road team.  Cool.  They are 57-25.  Cool.  HOWEVER, they are 1-9 in their last 10 games against Western Conference playoff teams.  Their one win was last night in which NOH led at halftime but stopped caring in the 2nd half.  They likely would have beat the Mavericks if they took the game seriously.  The Mavs are 34-6 against teams below 500.  They are 25-19 against teams above 500.  A winning record, yes, but their 57-25 record basically means they get their stuff done against every team.

Portland's starting lineup is far better than the Mavs.  Miller has outperformed Kidd in nearly every game the past 2 years.  I'm not just saying he had one stat better, I'm saying he was a landslide better than Kidd.  Kidd was held scoreless in their last matchup, while I believe Dre had a near triple double.  Rodrigue Beaubois versus Wesley Mathews... hmmm.  Not to mention Roddy just got injured.  Wesley is a better defender, equally a deadly shooter, and can attack the basket better.  Advantage Wesley.  Gerald Wallace versus Shawn Marion.  Do I need to explain this one?   LaMarcus has also been near equal, if not better, than Dirk Nowitzki as well.  Camby versus Chandler, got to give this one to Chandler, but it's not that big of a difference, especially on the offensive end.

Bench really depends on Roy and Rudy.  I don't expect Rudy to step up.  He was a huge embarrassment and pathetic in the Suns series.  Roy is really random.  We saw him explode against Dallas in March, but I'd be fine with going 5-9 and getting a few assists.  He might not be able to defend well, but he can get the job done.  People are saying "oh Roy looks so bad", but he actually isn't hurting the team, and is pretty efficient with his minutes, he just isn't explosive and another person could fill his shoes, but he definitely is worth putting out on the court when someone needs rest.  Batum, lately, has been playing better than Jason Terry.

Mavs are a jumpshooting team.  Blazers need to attack and attack and attack.  They don't commit a lot of fouls, but Chandler does.  Take out Chandler, and it should be easy.  Blazers are far more physical and aggressive than the Mavs.  The Mavs don't like to run, much like the Blazers (although the addition of Wallace changes that), and they hardly attack the paint.  The only way the Blazers lose this is if they don't play their defense (which was able to lock down the Thunder and the Lakers for most of those games) and if they get into a jumpshooting contest with the Mavs.  The Mavs are a far better jump shooting team.  Attack the paint and the Blazers win.  Be aggressive.

    No excuses for losing this.

our x-factor is going to be Crash. the reason being is that opposing teams don't know how to scout him wihin our system yet. in fact, i'd say there are things we don't even know along those lines. LaMarcus loves playing in dallas and against dallas. he's had some of the best games of the season against them. i think we will come out very hungry and ready to go.

a lot of it is going to depend on the bench play. Nicolas needs to stay consistent, Rudy needs to hit his shots, and Brandon needs to provide steady leadership. winning game one will be a key, because we have to protect our house and trying to win three in a row is tough.

not only is dallas 1-9 against western conference playoff teams; portland is 6-2 against the top four teams in the conference since acquiring Gerald. given that i don't believe in coincidences, i think that means a lot.

we'll be relatively rested. LaMarcus, Nicolas, Gerald, Marcus and Brandon sat out the season finale so they'll have that extra day of rest. a great note along those lines is that our workhorse, LaMarcus, comes into the series having played just 29 minutes in the previous seven days. that's like 4 minutes of game time per day. Patty's big bro needed some rest and he got it. now it's time to kick it into high gear.

we're going to win this in six games, beating the mavericks in games 1, 3, 4 and 6. in fact, bring out the brooms right now because that's just the way it's going to be.

    yeah, i said it!

I've picked the Blazers in 6, and like Herr, I will be disappointed if they don't win this series.  Kasey is right, that Crash is the X factor.  He gets so hungry in the 'big' games, as you can see in his stats from the 4 playoff games from last season, and you all have witnessed in the last 2 months.

Including the monster 4th game of the series, which was on the home floor when he ended up with 25 pts and 17 rebounds.  He averaged 45% shooting from  3 point range, not to mention 47% from the Field and less than 1 turnover per game.  I know I'm biased, but as I learn more about the team, it's really nice to see how well GW's gifts and talents compliment his teammates (and vice versa).

    Go Blazers

Hope you're right Kass.  only concern I have in this is getting into a jumpshooting contest with the Mavs, in which the Mavs will win.  Portland needs to attack the paint and attack it hard.  Play the defense they played against the Mavs, Thunder, and Lakers.

However, I'm thinking we're going to be winning game 2, not game 1.  Game 1 is almost always used as testing the water.  I think the Mavs will try to come out and send a message and actually fire on all cylinders.  Kinda how Portland did in Game 1 and Game 4 last season, but I don't think the Mavs will win Game 2, 3 or 4.  But, that's just me.  I think our chances of winning both games is pretty good.  People say it'll be close... I don't think it will be as long as the Blazers play their best.

I am going to say Blazers in 6! I say that because I don't think that we have it in us to take the series 4-0, and I believe that the Mavs will win at least one maybe two at home.Portland might be able to take them in 5 games, but I think it's more likely 6. The Mavs will either win one or two at home or one home and one here in P-Town. But no matter what, The Blazers have what it takes to dominate this series. So they better take advantage of this opportunity that is sitting right in front of them, or they will have no respect from any team. That is until they are able to get out of the first round of the Playoffs. Come Blazers...Let's do this!!!!!!!!!!
I am a fan of Miller dominating the stats and the Blazers beating dallas to finally get out of the first round!

I believe the Blazers will pull it out in 6...  The Mavs have not been playing great lately, and the Blazers have been on a hot streak...  LaMarcus has outplayed Dirk in the H2H matchups, and add the driving ability of Wallace and Matthews, and I believe the Mavs will be in foul trouble for the majority of this series.

The X-Factor, in my opinion, is Camby, we need his toughness and rebounding

We should not underestimate the Mavs. But as someone allready mentioned, they will have big problems to scout Wallace. And for LaMarcus (the best in the west!!) every game of this serie is like playing at home ;)

I hope we are not too optimistic, the mavs have some very experienced players. An important factor in the playoffs.
Anyway after the last performances from our team we can be optimistic: We are going to win this in six games!

X factor in this series is going to be Brandon Roy

Agree 100%. The game we blew them out earlier this month, it was Roy who posted up the smaller Dallas guards and either he scored with his back to the basket or he found an open shooter. If he can score on the blocks, our offense could be difficult for Dallas to stop. On paper, I really think we have the better team, but we need to prove it come playoff time. Another player to look out for is Nic Batum. If we can get 15-17 from Nico, then we will be set. It's when Batum becomes non-existent on the offensive end that we seem to struggle. We know LA should get his, but we will need two other guys on a nightly basis to help him shoulder in the offensive load.

We should be Dallas in six because we have so many player we can throw at Dirk and we should wear them down.I have Brandon as my X-Factor because I know what I'm going to get from Gerald and this is LA chance to prove he belongs with the top players in the league he had a great season, but the top players are made in the playoffs and it help that your playing in your home town so he'll be extra motivatedand steal the show, but if Brandon has an impact on this series we will win in 5 because I feel that Dirk's best team he had around him was the 2006 team and the pressure of getting out of the first round is more on them than on us.

Nice to see all the optimism here.  However, look for Rick Carlisle and the Mavs to expose and take advantage of Portland's achilles heal all year (and last)...depth in the front court.  Dallas is extremely deep up front and will be sending a number of bodies at LA and Camby.  At this stage in his career, Marcus shouldn't be starting on a playoff caliber team.  Necessity has come calling, and to this point, Marcus has more than delivered.  That said, when foul trouble rears it's ugly head, the Blazers and Nate McMillan will have no choice but to either turn to a CBA'er OR, play pivotal players out of position, where they are far less effective...throwing that match-up pendulum over in Dallas' favor.

Portland's inability to score in the paint  in the halfcourt and get significant stops at the defensive end, coupled with their lack of consistent perimeter shooting and anemic front-court(at the 4 and 5) translate to Dallas advancing, IMO

Dre is my X-factor.  Without pace, Portland has a hard time accumulating points in the paint and well documented are this team's inconsistencies on the perimeter.
If the Blazers are to win, they will need their floor general doing what he has done all year long for them, control tempo and push.

Defensively, deny entries to the post by putting length on Kidd with Nic.  Wallace on Dirk may prove successful, as Dirk doesn't like contact and must have space on the catch to be effective.

I'm hoping the Blazers take care of business in 5 games. They need to dominate this series, and there is no reason why they shouldn't. They match up better, they have a better bench. Go out and knock Dallas on their tails. Derk will get his points, along with Terry, but we should make a statement in this series. That's why Portland needs to close this series out in 5. Time to step up Portland, "You can do it", as Rob Schneider would say!

Dallas has 3 players who are amongst the top ten in all time 3pt fg made.
    jason kidd is number 3
    peja at number 4
and jason terry is number 8.
i would put my extra defense on open shooters and focus on close out defense when they are posted on the arc.

Anyone care to adjust your predictions?  Or will you all just quietly disappear, as past history has shown?  Sometimes I hate being right.  Great game plan however.  Kidd will not hit 6 threes four times in a seven game series.  This marks the first time in post season play, where I didn't feel Nate was out-coached.  Were it not for Wallace's two blown opportunities in the fourth to drive the dagger in (missed lay-up and overthrown pass to Roy), this game may have turned out differently.  The game was slipping away from the Mavs on both those occassions.  Get the split Tuesday P'town!  GO BLAZERS!

Consistent complimentary contributors for LaMarcus at the offensive end will be the key to advancing past this loaded Dallas team.  Inconsistent production, particularly off the Blazer bench, has plagued this team all year.  While I remain confident in Nate's abilities to make the necessary defensive adjustments between games, he cannot make the rock tickle the twine.  LA needs help.  Consistent help.  I expect Wallace and Matthews to both come out with something to prove in game 2, and hope that somebody off that Blazer bench follows their lead.  If not, we're likely looking at an 0-2 series.

My other worry is the team once again falling in love with the jumpshot, after having been given the cold shoulder by the whistles in Game 1.  Remain the aggressors, at BOTH ends, AND for the full 48, and enjoy that plane ride back home with a series split.

Kidd will not hit 6 threes four times in a seven game series
the simple truth is, you have no idea what kidd is going to do in the games to come.
the fact that you let him hit those 6 three's is enough incentive for dallas to play theyre long range shooter card next game and as soon as the blazer players all flock out to block the open man dallas will already have fed it in down low for the score.
because the blazers have already established their lack of defense in this series./

Dallas is a streaky team and i guarantee they did not expect to win that first game, they may have wanted to, but with all the media hype about how the choke, it was far from a sure thing.
but now portland has lost their upper hand in this series. i mean their offense is to bland to have any efficiency.
like you cant just use the miller to aldridge ally-oop the entire series.

as rough as the road to victory may have looked before, i think 1 its a lot more rough now and 2 it aint getting any easier.
