Preview: Brooms Up: Portland Looks To Sweep Cavs
On Thursday night, Portland and Cleveland will meet up for the second and final time of the season. The Trail Blazers sent the Cavaliers to an NBA single-season record 24th straight loss on Feb. 5, when Portland held on for a 111-105 victory at Quicken Loans Arena, marking the first time in 13 tries the Trail Blazers exceeded the century mark.
After holding off the Mavericks in a 104-101 shootout, Portland must now make sure they don't lose momentum this time around. After sweeping Florida, the team was flying high, but quickly fell back down to earth after dropping two, winnable games. Once again, Portland is coming off of a major victory over one of the top 5 teams in the League with two teams coming into the Rose Garden that will be enter as heavy underdogs.

Watch this game closely. Look at the players and see if their intensity is there. Are they fired up after plays? Are bodies all over the court diving for loose balls? If the answer is yes, then our Blazers are back. We simply can not keep playing down to the level of our competition. At 12-53, Cleveland is already eliminated from the playoffs and has nothing to play for. If you put them away early, what's their motivation to fight back? The ultimate key to this game is getting off to a hot start.

The Blazers got a good thing going for them. They need to stick with the current line-ups and let the chemistry evolve. I strongly believe the Blazers could take the Mavs out in 7 and go to the second round.

Put the foot on their neck early and give them no life we didn't in the last meeting. Give the ball to LA early and often and let him lead us to domination.

I don't believe it any more realistic to catch Denver as I do OKC.  As I said after the Charlotte game, that loss was big, and potentially the last we would see of the Nuggets in the standings.  A win in Charlotte would have put the Blazers in a tie with Denver for 5th.  That was perhaps the most significant loss of the season in terms of ramifications.

With both CLE and PHY, I would like to see us get out in front early, and big, behind some dominating inside play from LA.  These two games will offer GW a nice opportunity to find his stride and in theory, should offer Roy some rest before he's again called upon for some heavy lifting in Staples this weekend.

Agree with CarlJ1 100%.  Take care of biz.  The Blazers should be looking at EVERY opponent from here on out thru Purple and Gold colored glasses.

So you mean we should lose to Cleveland?  I'd prefer the red, white and black glasses.  You know, the ones the Bulls have been wearing.

I'm nervous honestly.  More nervous than before we played Dallas.  I'm afraid we'll lose this game we're in high stride, like after the Heat game.

I'd be on the same boat as you BDawg, but as brutal as our schedule is, Denver's isn't all that easier.  They got to Miami and Orlando.  Winnable, obviously, but it's our chance to catch up, since we've got 3 "cupcakes" this week while Denver's got a couple of 1lb steaks.

Although, I'm starting to like Dallas more and more, especially since last night was VERY convincing that we could beat them, since they were their best all season and we still beat them, but OKC would be the easier matchup, and I'd much rather face the Spurs in the 2nd round than the Lakers.  Oh well, facing the Lakers could be the experience this team needs to take the next jump.

@Herr...allow me to attempt clarification.  I wasn't suggesting that it be beneficial to lose a game, any game.  So much can be lost in translation with our posts.  I see us rolling on Cleveland tonight, with a bad Charlotte/ATL taste still in our mouths and not-so-gentle reminders on Nate's pre-game chalkboard.  The PHY game however, does scare me a little.  That game feels like a "trap game" to me, with it being far too easy to be looking ahead to the showdown with Showtime at the Staples Center, and it likely following a throttling of a Cavs team that really has no business even sharing the court with the Blazers.

By "purple and gold colored glasses" I was meaning I hoped the team would look at every game as if the Lakers, bringing that same energy and focus.

I don't believe catching the Nuggets is going to happen.  They are playing at too high a level, with too much of a lead and too few games left.  Then, factor in Portland's schedule.  Denver left Portland in their rear view the night of the Charlotte game.  By three "cupcakes" this weekend, you didn't mean to include the Laker game IN LA did you, because that is the third game on the schedule from now and is this weekend.  That game looms large on the horizon.

OKC has too much size for Portland now, and has become very physical.  I don't like that match-up at all.  Before Perkins, and with Green...maybe, but not now.  Our one and only banger?  Collins.  Not going to get it done.  Make no mistake, our Blazer team is a finesse team heading into post-season competition, which is partly responsible for Nate going with the smaller line-up.  Play to your strengths.  It's too late to address your weaknesses.

Gerald needs to remain starting.  He brings the energy early.  He sets the defensive and hustle tones of the game.

This is what good teams do.

This win is indicative of growth, more so than the San Antonio, Chicago, or Miami wins.  While those may have been bigger wins, this win reflects growth...and it couldn't be coming at a better time.

Finally, we put our foot down and never let us, something I've been waiting to see from this team for a while. The teamwork was simply sensational. At times, we were even too unselfish, but that's okay as their intentions were well. We suffocated them defensively and looked to run at every chance. We established LA and our shooters him open shots. But the best thing I saw from last night? The progress of Gerald Wallace. He can play at this level but it took him some time to get acclimated playing with his new teammates. He was rebounding, leading the break, blocking shots and finding the open man at will. I love how he finishes on the break. Last night's game was so enjoyable. Even with a huge lead, we were still fighting for everything. I hope they can take that mindset throughout the rest of the season and into the playoffs.
