The Fight for 5th Seed

    So, besides the fight for the 2nd seed in the West, the fight for the 5th seed in the Western Conference is also one of the more entertaining ones, especially because there are, in my opinion, 3 teams that can claim the 5th spot.  Denver, Portland, and New Orleans.

    Viewing Portland's schedule, it is home heavy, especially in April, but the weakest team is Cleveland.  They still have two matchups against the top 3 teams in the Western Conference (2 against each of them).  However, this team proved they are capable of winning against any team, but also proved they are capable of losing to any team.

    Next up is the Denver Nuggets.

    They are currently 2 games ahead of the 7th seed position, who is third in posistion in these three teams.  However, the Nuggets have the worse road record of the playoff teams, but have one of the best home records.  They are also 7-2 since their trade.  3 of those games have come against playoff teams, however all 3 of those were at home.  One was against Boston, who played 9 players, and bench was filled with "bench warmers".  The others were against the Hawks and Charolette.  Their two loses have come on the road.  They are 2-2 on the road since the trade.  The two loses have come against Portland and the Clippers.  The two wins have come against Phoenix and Utah.

    Their remaining schedule is very road heavy.  7 of their 9 road games are against playoff contenders.  5 of them are against higher seeded teams.  The other two are against Atlanta and New Orleans.  Their home schedule is favorable. The only tough teams are really San Antonio and OKC.  Their easiest road game is against Utah.

    Next up is the Hornets, who are 38-29, and have played 1 more game than Both Portland and Denver.  They are the streakest team in the league.  Their upcoming schedule contains about half and half, and is probably the easiest of these three teams.  However, in my opinion, the Hornets are the weakest of the 3 teams, and each game is hardly predictable.  Their remaining schedule could be difficult if Phoenix and Utah are still in the playoff race, as they face them fairly soon and both those teams want a spot, and beating the Hornets is likely their best chance of getting one.  They play both Portland and Denver once.  They are 2-1 against Portland, and 2-0 against Denver.  A win against Portland secures the tie breaker between both these teams, which is crucial for them.

    Which team will be 5th seed?  My guess is Portland.

    All three teams games are tough so I say the team that doesn't lose more than two games in a row will get the 5th seed since the race is so tight.

    Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
