Who should be our starter for next year? I say Bayless. What do you guys think? Blake is a great backup but I don't think he's the answer. We could package Blake with some draft picks or something, but that hinders Bayless' developement. Maybe it would benefit Bayless more playing as the backup point guard next year but the year after he NEEDS to have the starting job. If he's the backup next year we should stick with Blake for one more year. It's not worth bringing someone in to be the starter for just one year. I could give you all my reasons for why I think Bayless should be starting next year but I already put it in my blog (check it out) and I don't feel like typing it all up again.

it's not who starts, but who finishes that matters, it's also too soon to tell, ask me after draft day and summer league.

I think Blake will start, that is IF they don't sign an Andre Miller. I don't think they will trade. If anything they will sign a FA but it sounds like they are going to make a run at bringing Joel Freeland over. I thought that was a joke earlier when someone said that, but on Courtside tonight KP was HUGE on Freeland. He sounded iffy on Koponen. Both are possibilities, but it sounds like he is going to really push to get Freeland and if Koponen plays well in the World Championships he will get another shot at making the roster this year. I think the most likely is that we remain status quo and Bayless will take over as starter part way through the season so he is ready when the Playoffs come.

I didnt have a chance to watch courtside. Did they say if we will have to buy out a contract for either of those players?

RCR, I would never kid about Joel Freeland! Lol. :)

I've been interested in our Euro Big Man for a while, and I sort of wondered why PetKo was getting more attention that him last year. Now, after having a great season overseas, people are starting to recognize! Draftexpress has him (Freeland) as the #7 most valuable overseas prospect whose rights already belong to a team (with Petteri coming in at a respectable #16.) And I think he'd be a great backup at the 4 with potential at C, people having even compared him to David Lee (who I'd love to see coming off our bench, though that'd never happen.)

I didn't get a chance to hear courtside, but I'm really glad to hear there're more people jumping on the Freeland wagon! With the power of 2 Joels combined down low, we cannot and will not be stopped!!! Lol... Ok, I may be overstating just a bit, I don't think Freeland is quite polished enough to come in and be an impact player right away. Just getting him in a Blazers uni for 2009-2010 will make me a happy camper! :)

RCR, I would NEVER kid about Joel Freeland! Lol.

I've had high interest in our Euro big man for a long time, I'm glad to see he's finally getting some attention. I was actually somewhat disappointed when PetKo was getting all the attention last year and hardly anyone was even mentioning Freeland, but after a respectable year in Europe people are starting to pay attention. Draftexpress actually has him ranked as the #7 most valuable overseas prospect whose rights already belong to an NBA team (with PetKo coming in at a respectable #25.) I'd love to see Freeland coming in to back L-Train up at the 4, with the potential to play the C spot as well. I've heard comparisons drawn between Freeland and David Lee, who I would LOVE to see coming in with our 2nd unit (though that'll never happen.)

I didn't get a chance to hear Courtside, but I'm glad to hear that Freeland is getting some serious talk this year. With 2 Joels holding down the middle, we will be UNSTOPPABLE! Lol. Alright, I may be overstating a bit, I don't think Freeland is ready to come in and be an immediate impact player in the NBA. Nonetheless, just getting him into a Blazers uni heading into 09-10 would be great!

PetKo has been getting more attention from us because he was producing in our summer leagues where Joel has not. We also have a PG fixation here for some reason. I am going to go do some research of my own now on Freeland. I think that is true though. The Joels seem to be the same person just one is a little smaller. Both are blue collar type players. If we could get him over that would be awesome. He may not even be productive for the first couple years but he would be a great investment on the longevity of the team's success.

This discussion (the Blake/PG scenarios) is great, but it also happens to be occurring in about 7 other threads as well! (or so it seems, lol).

But hey, I'll bump any thread that can rile up excitement over the Twin Towers of Joel+Joel!

    Bump. :)

You look at CP3, Tony Parker, Deron Williams, Chauncy Ba-Ba-Billups, and what makes these point guards the "elite" group, is their abilty to take the ball to the rack. Now we have a rookie Blazer that's fearless when it comes to driving towards the basket, and layin' down the law. That's why when we hear trade rumors, they almost always put Bayless in the package. Why? Because Jerryd could possibly be the next super-duper point guard. But the Blazers won't get a chance to find out, if they continue to make Bayless ride the bench.

Bayless is not going anywhere for at least 4 years unless the Blazers wish for it to happen. He has a three year contract with another year option and the year after that he will be a restricted free agent so the Blazers can match any offer. If they are as high on him as you are and believe he is the future point gaurd for this team they surely will not trade him but try to bring him up slowly. I feel that you may be right about his capabilities but there are a lot of people that may have the ability; but thats just one attribute that you need to be a star in the NBA, there are many others.

there is no way Bayless starts, even when Blake was out this year he didn't start. He hardly played at all this year. I think Blake is the starter unless they sign someone else which I hope they do. It would be nice to sign a veteran point guard to help Bayless grow. I think Bayless will be lucky to be the second string.

I think it is so funny how people talk about getting a different PG to help Bayless grow. Nobody works magic with PG's better than Nate. Nate is a PG coach. Who was Luke's veteran PG in Seattle? Nobody worth talking about that's for sure. Bayless is going to grow more by being in the system he is in. Now granted, once he DOES become the starter then you could make the argument to make him even BETTER, but for now he has to get better than Blake before you need a different PG to teach him. The combination of Blake and Coach Nate is best for Bayless because Blake knows the system and he can help Bayless fit into THIS system and Coach Nate's system while also being able to use his strengths to make Nate's system even better.

Blake will be the starter next year. Bayless will be the back-up.

Next year Bayless will get more used to being a point guard and learn the system and become a Nate produced point guard. Bayless seems to be very receptive of learning, so for a coach that's awesome. Bayless will grow and become our starter in a year or so.

I'm fine with Bayless coming off the bench as long as he's getting 25 minutes a game. He's not gonna get any better sitting on the bench. I don't care what veteran point guard you have, you have to actually play to get better. Even if he doesn't take this team deep in the playoffs next year he'll be developing along with everyone else instead of just watching them and not being ready in a couple years. He needs the experience NOW.

I also think we should get Petteri Koponen over here and let him play in the D-League, or maybe as the third string since Sergio will likely be gone, but I'd rather see him actaully getting to play so he'll be ready when we need him.

Does anyone out there honestly think Bayless shouldn't be getting any playing time next year? just curious

I don't quite understand why people say we should bring in a veteran point guard and sit bayless another year to learn. I think that was this year for him to sit. It's time to play. If we are going to bring in a veteran PG then we get rid of Blake.

    But we keep Blake.

Absolutely. Bayless needs to play and there is no reason he won't this year. I think he is in for a breakout season and KP is going to be hated again by other league executives because another player he picked up did so darn well. Just wait and see what happens this year, I am realy excited for the new season.

Nah uhhh a defensive center, a backup big either position I don''t care, an experienced wing, without having to give up any draft picks. I''d probably do this but I just don''t know for sure.

I completely agree he could be that voice on the court we need. Lamarcus just isn''t that guy and Damian can learn some on court leadership from him. A small lineup when we need a score bad of Dame, Wes, Paul, Nic, and Lamarcus would be potent.
