The gimmes. I'm counting 5 players I believe have little to no chance of being on the 2009-2010 roster: Channing Frye Shavlik Randolph Michael Ruffin Raef LaFrentz Sergio Rodriguez Thoughts? Many of you may say Outlaw after his poor showing in the playoffs, but keep this in mind: "It was totally a learning experience for him," Pritchard said of the postseason. "I feel like he needed to go through a playoff experience to see what it's like. If you make decisions on four or five or six games, it could come back to bite you. He has the potential to win basketball games. He's a shot-maker, and when he does that we're a different team."

I cannot get on the Travis train at all. I know a lot of people like him I also heard he is great for the community but I do not like his game. I know my opinion does not matter and KP and Nate like him but I believe is Webster comes back fine he will be shopped. I not basing this off play offs either but his whole body of work. I think Rudy can take more shots next year on bench and Batum 2nd year he should be shooting more also. I also like Pryz and I really think we might end up with a more dynamic PF to back LA and cover centers in fould trouble. I know Travis has potential but he has been here a while and the small PF advantage goes both ways when playing better teams because there PF are good and dominate him on offense and rebounding. I honestly thought the team would lose him before trade dead line so there a good chance he might stick around but we will see off-season just as exciting for me as regular season.

I think the fact that Ruffin and Raef (and Shavlik, sadly) have NO chance of coming back at all next year, I think that actually improves the chances for some of the other duds to stick around, to bolster our roster. Those losses drop us down to 12 players, and I can't think we're going to be bringing in 3 new people via draft, Euro assets, or trade without giving up anything at all.

Yeah, I agree that those 3 probably won't be back. I also think that if Frye wants to get paid to play he won't be back. I think Portland will make an offer, but I think that there just isn't as much opportunity for him to play. There are only so may minutes to go around. I wish he would stay because he is an awesome guy, but for him, it is best to move forward with his career and spend his summers in Portland. I don't think Sergio will be traded for drafpicks or Euro-prospects, but he may be traded for capspace to sign a big FA or if a certain FA gets signed possibly in a trade for him.

I'm a big Travis fan, and I do not get all the hate for him. Of course I also hope he doesn't leave because I just bought his jersey a couple weeks ago and don't want it to be out of date already. That KP quote was encouraging, and gives me some hope they'll keep him around. I think he does more for the team than people realize. The biggest thing that comes to mind is his game-winning shot in the Detroit game with about 8 seconds to go.

As far as subtractions, the 5 in the original post are pretty safe bets. Raef's huge contracts being off the books gives us a ton of cap flexibility, not necessarily to sign a big name free agent in the short term, but to have money around in a few years when B.Roy and LMA's rookie contracts are up and they need to be signed to real NBA star-level ones. If Frye is willing to take a huge pay cut then we could keep him, because I love his attitude and his personality but as a player I don't think he's worth making a huge effort to keep. But I think some other team needs him more than we do, and if they want to sign him, more power to them. Same with Shavlik, he's a fine player but we have so many guys in that forward position that he'll never get any significant playing time in Portland, and he'd probably do better somewhere else. Ruffin is one of the most useless players I've ever seen in professional basketball. KP got him strictly to shave a few million off our payroll. Sergio I see as someone to put into a draft-day package to get a higher pick a la Jarrett Jack last year. But other than those obvious ones, I don't really want to mess with the core of the team too much. I like these guys as they are, and if we keep this same team we're going to be unstoppable in a couple of years.

I'm down with Outlaw, i know everyone likes to think Webster is the best bet, but i think Outlaw is the safe bet. He stays healthy, he believe it or not is not the one i was disappointed with in the playoffs. i was more disappointed with Blake. However, i do not Blake gone. I just hope Bayless will be ready to stay next season. As for Frye, i am gonna keep my fingers crossed. I think he fits well in Portland. He could go somewhere else and get more PT, but i like the thought of him taking a pay cut just for love of the team.

It isn't just a paycut though for Frye. He doesn't get any playing time and when you are a competitor, there is no satisfaction in watching your teammates play. If he wants to be happy, he is going to sign with San Antonio, or Golden State, maybe even Phoenix or Miami. Those would be the best opportunities for him to play and compete.

I'd like to see Frye stay as well. But if he stays, I'd like to see him averaging 20 minutes a game by the All Star break. If it's not working out at that point, trade then. I believe he would surprise some folks if he had more playing time. Great for Portland and chemistry. That said, I'll leave it up to KP and Frye.

yeah, i don't think there are 20 extra minutes to give him. That's the problem. He is a FA this season so in order to keep him we would have to re-sign him and I know he sees it, I know Portland sees it, Portland will make him an offer out of respect, but I think he will ultimitely end up somewhere else next season.

Oh, and I wish him all the best where ever he lands. I would love to see him succeed against every other team in the league than Portland. :-)

    Yeah lol.

what sucks though is watching just the few games against Houston i got to, Frye somehow managed to keep his cool, sink his jumpshots, and played like he has been in the league for 10+ years. I think Frye has a lot more to offer this team then we allow him to. But that is also addressed in the PT problem.

this is just that one thing that i refuse to be logical, and just believe that Frye will be back next year, averaging 15-20 minutes a game, happy, and still making the Blazer jersey look good.

but on the logical side. its just gonna suck seeing him in another jersey.

Well, if there's one thing this franchise is full of, it's surprises. He could totally be back next season averaging 15-20 mpg averaging 10 pts and 8 rbds. I believe he's capable of that. I'd love for that to happen. As a reminder, the last 5 games of the 2007-2008 season, he started in place of Joel. He averaged 16.2 pts and 10 rbds. Just before this season started, it was sounding like he'd worked very hard over the summer, was looking good, then he had ankle surgery. He got off to a slow start, and never got any momentum. So, if he does stay, I'd expect to see a vastly improved player. That would be 3 of our guys in a similar situation-- Frye, Webster, and after another year of healing-- Oden. I expect all of them to have elevated games this coming season. That's why I'd like to give them all a couple months next season, possibly wait until the trade deadline to make a move. That said, if the right player comes up-- a better fit-- we take it. As always, in KP we trust.
