So I wasn't sure where to post this. Not sure how many looks it would get in the off-topic board, but I’m afraid of spamming the main board if this isn’t appropriate. Mods, you can move this if it isn’t.

I figured I'd share my odd route to becoming a Blazers fan.

As some background information - I'm a 22 year old college student living in South Florida. As a kid (maybe 9 or 10) I randomly started following Portland, during the Sabonis/Grant/Stoudemire/Wells days. After a couple of years, my interests turned almost exclusively to hockey (yes, hockey in S. FLA) and football.

I host a sports talk show at my college's radio station, and my co-host is the prototypical American sports fan. Big into everything, including basketball, and not hockey. In order to get myself back into basketball, we held a segment called "The Decision" mocking Lebron's. The goal was to finally help me choose my official NBA team in order to get me following basketball on a regular basis. People called in and suggested a bunch of teams, and I had a list I made up of some of my personal favorites.

It would have been very easy to pick the Heat, living right in the heart of Heat country, but it didn't sit right with me. The whole attitude turned me off, and I knew right away that I wasn't comfortable choosing them.

The final three ended up being Atlanta, Oklahoma City (which had a strong push, people urging me to get on with a young team as a new fan) and of course Portland.

At the beginning, I had pretty much narrowed it to Atlanta and Oklahoma City, feeling strange attractions to both teams. I went to the store to pick a hat (that was the gimmick – I was going to reveal my choice by donning a hat on the air). They didn’t end up having hats of any of the finalists here, so I decided to go the jersey route.

I noticed, about a day or two before “The Decision” that I was having an extraordinarily difficult time in my mind, choosing between the Hawks and Thunder. One minute I was envisioning a Joe Johnson jersey, and the next it was Kevin Durant. However, I never felt THAT enthused about it. It finally dawned on me that the reason I wasn’t excited about this was that neither team actually felt right.

The day before “The Decision,” I woke up thinking about Portland. I recalled the enjoyment I had watching them in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I remembered saying “Arvydusssss Sabonissss” in my public address voice. It was settled. I went to the store and got my red, Brandon Roy jersey, and revealed it on the show the following day.

Ever since, it’s felt completely right, and I know I made the right choice. I’ve watched the nationally televised games, and followed the others on CBS Sportsline’s game tracker.

I’m a Blazer for life, and I love it! I just wish I could see them in person, and I wish it was easier to find merchandise for the team. I ordered a sweet Blazers hat on the internet for the holidays, and wore it today around campus. I may be the only one not rooting for the Heat down here, but I could care less.

    Go Blazers!

That's awesome! Maybe just my opinion, but the Blazer hat in south Florida is WAY cooler than a Heat hat. i hope you got a flat bill. There are a lot of front runner Heat fans now, and nobody can call you a front runner down there rockin the pin wheel. You made the right choice.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone!

@blazerfan7 - I haven't yet - as you can imagine tickets are crazy here. But I'm definitely going to try.

    Thanks Lappinoir!

Thanks Justin - should've put it there I suppose, but who knows who would've found it. :)

Jason - I definitely enjoy rocking the hat down here. This is the one I got (http://www.lids.com/pid/20142330) It looks sick! Almost everyone is a bandwagoner down here and it feels good to know I'm not one. Thanks!

That keeps me up at night as well. I think because when he shot in the low post, he would is and back the guy down, and Stotts wants to avoid ISOs and much as possible. BUT WHY if he is so good at it? LMA is a really really smart player, and he kn...

Maniac he does not need play in Summer League. He does need to toughen up a lot and become more efficient.

That''s because Bosh has a good defensive coach. Also, Bosh is a more effective mid range shooter than LMA, because he only takes good wide open shots. I think if he was the number one option and took as many shots as LMA, or had to set up his own...
