    Sloan to resign via ESPN-
Jerry Sloan will resign as coach of the Utah Jazz on Thursday, according to media reports in Salt Lake City.

On Wednesday night, Sloan kept reporters waiting more than half an hour after Utah's loss to the Chicago Bulls as he met with his assistants and general manager Kevin O'Connor. And the Jazz announced that Thursday's practice had been abruptly canceled.

It's unfortunate he never got to win a NBA championship as a NBA head coach. Definitely one of the greats to ever be apart of the game and was rightfully inducted into the Hall of Fame even still being active.

ESPN's spinning this as Sloan is stepping down prior to a heated conversation with team GM.

This is sad. I wonder what happened between him on the GM - as the that is what the article said, that there was some confrontation of some sort.

I've said somewhere on the site before that I respect Jerry Sloan, even though Utah has always been a rival of ours, but I can respect any team that he coaches and of course, that has been only Utah. I'm glad I got to see a game coached by him during the holidays this past winter.

Let's see what the reason is, then I'll comment further.

Just saw this on Marc Stein's Twitter:

    • @STEIN_LINE_HQ Yet one source stressed incident was just one of many flareups in recent weeks symptomatic of declining relationship between coach and star 7 minutes ago
    • @STEIN_LINE_HQ Two sources say Wednesday's tension started when DWill ran different play than play called on sideline by Sloan, leading to halftime blowup 9 minutes ago
    • @STEIN_LINE_HQ RT @tribjazz: Sources say Sloan had lost team. One described situation as Deron Williams only staying if Sloan stepped down 11 minutes ago

I did not see this coming but if this is the last time we see him as a coach in my time that i watch basketball i feel he is one of the greatest coaches of all time and the hardest working coach despite not winning a ring or coach of the year. It's also still inpressive that he been coaching the same team for two decades i wish would of won a ring and a long awaited COY award best there more to life than basketball so i wish him all the best.

    From User Crim-
I'm making this rumor up myself with no actual inside information, but you have to admit, it's an interesting prospect. He's so old school, that he'd be the best player development, assistant coach, sports would ever know. Now we know it's probably been tearing him up to see his favorite young player go to the blazer's, and his role player's go to the bulls. I hope he doesn't pull a Tony Dungy and become a broadcaster, the NBA needs Sloan more active than that.
Please, do not make up rumors. Second, if there is already a topic on Sloan, add to that conversation and please do not start another thread.

    Thanks guys

Okay, if Nate doesn't re-sign with us, GET SLOAN!  One of the top coaches of All-Time, and this guy has led the Jazz to the playoffs with teams that aren't really that good.

I expect Utah to plummet after this.  I hope he doesn't retire, that'd actually make me sad.

Best of luck for him. He had a fruitful NBA career. He's been the coach of the Jazz before I was born.

On the side note though: I think he'll be good with the Blazers. Not as head coach though (unless if Nate is willing to demote himself to accommodate Sloan). He'll teach these kids to spank 'em behinds.

Two sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that Sloan reacted angrily during the home loss when guard Deron Williams called a play on the floor that was different from the one Sloan called from the sideline.

That led to an emotional dispute at halftime, sources said, which was followed by Sloan's closed-door meeting with O'Connor after the game.

Now that it is official, just wanted to say indeed, it's an end of an era in Utah and in the NBA.  Just listened to John Stockton's thoughts and he said he was happy for Coach Sloan, so it makes me feel a little less sad. I was concerned that he didn't do it on his own terms, but maybe it was just that. But that it had to be because of a player in part or that he couldn't quit after a complete season. I do wish he could have one a title to be honest, but he's a done a great job and to see a coach at one place for 23 years - 'nough said.

With the wealth of knowledge and decades of experience, I trust that he made the right decision for himself and his family, given whatever circumstances surface in the coming weeks.  I believe Williams was involved, which is very unfortunate, and among the growing, glaring examples of this league needing to restructure financially.  A lock-out is coming, and I for one am glad.  No matter how long it may go, my hope is that, in the end, respect for the game will be reborn.  The GAME lost more than coach Sloan has with his stepping down.

The only way Sloan will coach another team besides the Jazz is....

If the team has a LEGITIMATE CHANCE of winning a championship. Blazers don't.

I guess I am the old one of the bunch . I actually got to see Jerry play. It was Blazers first season and my second game, courtside seats (eight bucks), I think I was seven at the time. I dont remember too much except that he was fast,a real good flopper and really good hands. I believe it was between him Mo Cheeks and Larry Steele were fighting for the number one spot on steals for awhile. I think they all have been long passed up.
As a coach you have to respect someone who has taken his team for 23 years and only has missed the play-offs 4 times and wonder why he just could not win the championship just once. If you look at who he had to play against when they had Stockton and Malone hell they were probably the underdogs in dam near every series on the west. Anyway he has worked for everything he has gotten it is just wrong that he never gotten a championship. In my eyes that is why I think he is better than the other 2  coaches that have more wins than him. He never followed the Superstars or the money had he,he might have more championships than either.

Sanders better shotblocker, better dunker and around the rim, Asik better defensively. I think Asik will have the better career.
