If given the opportunity to waive Brandon Roy persuant to the upcoming CBA, should the Blazers do so?

PLEASE TAKE A FEW MOMENTS TO REVIEW THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BELOW.  YOU MAY FIND THE AMNESTY LINK PARTICULARLY HELPFUL.

Jason Fleming of Hoopsworld submitted this piece this morning and I found it to be a good read.  In an effort to keep this fanbase among the most educated and intelligent in the league, I thought I'd share.  In his article, Fleming lists a number of players whose contracts are handcuffing their teams.  Among those mentioned, but not listed, was our own Brandon Roy...
And it doesn't even address players where injuries have likely stolen their best years and skills.  Should players like Brandon Roy be considered, ones who will come back from injury but are extremely unlikely to ever live up to their contract?  How about Milwaukee's Michael Redd and Denver's Kenyon Martin, who has every intention of coming back but whose cap figures are hurting their team?
In a not-so-subtle way, I believe Fleming is begging the amnesty question.  In 2005, amnesty was included as a provision in the agreed upon contract.  Portland's Derek Anderson was the first player to be waived using that provision, giving the Blazers some luxury tax relief.  I suspect a similar provision will again be a part of the new agreement, however, with some variation.  For some easy clarification on the amnesty clause of '05, check respected ESPN columnist Marc Stein's Amnesty Clause FAQ

Contracts are a foreign language to me.
But,  no way do they get rid of Roy.  If you can renegotiate the contract so we can add another player and keep him, yes.
I have a hard time feeling sorry for Mr Allen having to pay these contracts, when he keeps doing it after Darius Miles. Not comparing Roy to el diablo by any stretch, but dont sign it, if you dont want to pay it. Injuries are a reality on this team.

I would cut him only if I was 100% sure he could never be the same B. Roy again. Is it harsh? Yes. But he would still get his money, it just wouldn't count against the Salary cap.

I would like to see how Roy and Aldridge perform together now that LA has established himself as an inside threat. The sky's the limit in both of them playing at the top of their game.

Agree with ClydeFrog...adding that Roy himself has said that he will never be the same player, and that doctors have told him he should be able to still play the game at "a high level".

Please realize, BRoy's contract eats up nearly a third of Portland's cap money.  A THIRD.  This isn't about what Roy is worth, or what he has or hasn't done for this franchise.  There's no arguing that.  Roy will always be my favorite Blazer of all time.  If this city is to continue to have a professional basketball team, something will have to give.  Not waiving Roy if the opportunity presents itself, is simply financially irresponsible.  Keeping Roy is not a sustainable business model, pure and simple.  This team will not be competitive for the duration of his contract (2015) and PA will have no choice but to begin looking at his options.  Let's not forget, our new GM came complete with a law degree.  I am of the opinion that that was a prerequisite.

Don't feel for Brandon should this happen.  He still makes his money AND has the opportunity to earn a spot on another teams roster, netting a second income (if clause is similar to that of 2005).

No one player is ever bigger than the team.  Blazers > Roy

its a tough decision but what ever helps the franchise is what is needed. If it means waiving Roy then they need to do it but if it will hurt the team no way. Hate to see him go but i hate it more when another franchise wins the championship. I dont know much about the contract stuff of the NBA but im all for building up this franchise to be known as a top franchise. (such as Lakers, Celtics, Bulls and any other main franchise i didn't mention that has won many championships)

If they give up on Roy, I give up on the blazers. Let me rephrase, If they give up on Roy, then I will become a die hard lakers fan. I absolutely HATE the lakers, so that should say alot.

FACT: Brandon Roy earned his contract. While it does take up a third of Portlands cap money, I feel when he is healthy, it is a third that i have no problem being taken up.

With Brandon Roy playing at a high level, and the way LA has been playing, I honestly feel that we are a championship team.. no doubt.

Don't forget we have no clue how he plays after these knee surgeries. He might still be that great player we all fell in love with or he might be a stiff player who can only shoot. I just want to say i pray Roy is still Roy and the Blazers can be a contender in the near future.

No clue how he will play?  Hasn't Roy played through these procedures since college ?
Roy and Camby both had in and out procedures, not knee replacements.  I am not at all concerned about what Roy can do in the future for the Blazers.

We gotta give our guy the benefit of the doubt. He may be able to come back to the court strong as ever, and obviously we'd want Brandon to still be on the Blazers if this happens.

    Agreed.
This is partly why i am disappointed that has taken Aldridge sooooooooooooooooooo long to develop into the caliber of player he is showing us he is this year.
If Brandon had Meniscus, we would be golden, i mean really the only thing to make that situation better would be that oaf, Oden coming back.
But i dont hold my breath for that. But, it does get under my skin that , like Aldridge finally comes out and rocks the world, but at what cost.
Is it because it just suddenly happened? Or is because there was no one left to hold the fort down?
I mean really does no one think of that? Its almost as ridiculous as the "Officiating Conspiracy" i know, but thats exactly why i am surprised that none of you have mentioned it.
has anyone ever thought that perhaps this franchise chooses to be mediocre in the eye of the NBA?

Roy takes up 1/3 of the salary cap?

Yet, he's more like 100% of the player this team needs to win a championship.

Folks need to stop with the Roy situation until he gives up.  The man is smart, has a lot of passion, is a great shooter, playmaker, and threat.  Kobe going 5/20 didn't stop him from getting a championship, and honestly, when healthy, we could have better role players.

Keeping Roy is essential, until he absolutely has no use.  Besides, what more could this team do with money besides signing players to bigger contracts?  Most the players that play on this team come here and want to stay here, regardless of money.  I don't think we need to worry about cap space until someone like Batum, Aldridge, Oden or Mathews demands more money.

This discussion is moot until we see how he plays after his return anyway.
That being said, I say we keep him, simply even if he has to take a limited role, that could be enough to put us over the top. Say, if he were a Jason Terry type player, and gave us 15-20 off the bench a night, even that little bit would be huge. This team has always played great D but now with LaMarcus being the top threat, if Brandon returns to even 70% of what he was we can be a championship-caliber team.

I say start Roy and bring Wesley off the bench. People will say that I'm crazy since Roy is done but It might just be that his confidence needs a boost. Nate Can help by trusting him a bit more. Try it one game and see if he can do something.
On waiving Roy, that will never happen and it shouldn't !!!! He can still play as he showed in a couple of games before the playoffs. We need to give him the minuets and let him go to work not play him for 7 minuets while Rudy gets more while totally sucking.

I feel like everyone is forgetting that a lot of our players are on cheap contracts which will expire eventually, and leave us with no room to resign. Rudy and Batum are signed for cheap. What happens when we need to resign them? I used to love Roy, but now he is just a liability. Yeah he had a good game tonight, so what! So did Chris Johnson.

If you fit under the amnesty clause then you let him go and resign him for much less as a bench player. If you don't fit you keep him in hopes of him playing 85% or better until he can fit in the right trade package for the right player and or draft picks. I like Brandon and wish he can play at 85% or better for the next 5 years but I know better.

Marc Stein has an update on this amensty clause
Another key wrinkle from the rejected proposal, sources said, called for the ability for each team to shed one contract outright before next season through a one-time amnesty provision that wipes that contract off a team's books -- even though the player must still be paid -- reminiscent of a similar provision in the summer of 2005.
And then salary cap guru Larry Coon tweeted this out in regards to the chances of the amnesty clause being included in the final CBA-
Pretty high... League doesn't make changes in rules without allowing teams to make adjustments to accommodate rule changes. And I don't think it's a contentious issue for players. (In fact, with league-wide revenue guarantee, it gives playes extra money if some salary not counted on teams' caps.)

We got to waive Derek Anderson (I think it was him) under this very same clause a few years back. I'd hate to do it to Brandon, but that contract is a beast. I think it all comes down to Brandon and his play. If we get what we got out of him in the playoffs after Game 2, then you probably keep him.

If the new CBA has the Allan Houston clause then absolutely we should releive ourselves of the Salary.
Now all that said I wish Brandon well.  He wa my favorite player.

I would rather see a clause that allows a team to wave the salary, but retain the player rights say at the Vet minimums.  Wishful thinking.

I do hope to see an amnesty clause though in the next CBA.
