    From Oregon Live-
Rookie point guard Armon Johnson made his NBA Development League debut Friday and played 21 minutes in the Idaho Stampede’s home game against Fort Wayne. Johnson had four points, four assists, five rebounds, one steal and four turnovers and shot 1 for 5 from the field.

McMillan said he wasn’t sure how long Johnson’s D-League stint would last.

“We wanted to get him down there and let him play some games, but we also need him here,” McMillan said. “We’re an injury away from him playing. If Patty (Mills) goes down, you need him out there.”

    Stats-
    Game #1 vs. Fort Wayne
    22 minutes, 1-5 shooting, 4 points, 4 assists, 4 turnovers, 3 rebounds

    Game #2 vs. Fort Wayne
    24 minutes, 10-11 shooting, 23 points, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 6 rebounds

The headline of the recap says it all-
Armon Johnson, recently assigned from the Portland Trail Blazers, scored 23 points from the bench to help the Idaho Stampede (10-17) defeat the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (13-15) 106-99 at Qwest Arena Saturday night. The Stampede went on a 26-6 run to end the third quarter which gave them a 20-point lead, their biggest of the night.

I think him getting minutes and competing is more important than his overall stats. Knowing Armon he will soak up whatever he can from the experience and use it to improve himself and his game.

Got keep your eyes on his turnovers...that is what his problem was here along with bad shot selection and not running the plays. He has a ton of talent...now if he can just focus it for the better of the team!

Armon will get better and better...he played well at first..given minutes in the BIG games..then the turnovers and missed shots started to appen.  He's improved in just two games...HE WILL GET BETTER >>>he is a smart player and he'll find his groove.

i saw this a couple days ago and was going to make a post on it, at least the part were he was shipped down to them.
i thought he played there before, no?

But judging McMillians comments make it clear that Patty is obviously doing better than Armon. Or Nate fancies Patty more..ha..... i hope he does well down there, maybe skill boosters.
    luck.

Armon is a hard worker and relentless competitor, two traits that typically equal longevity in the league.  Mills offers Nate a change of pace PG, something AJ does not.  Johnson and Miller play a similar style and at similar pace, Miller the more savvy obviously.  This may have as much to do with Mills getting the back-up minutes over Johnson as anything.  Something to keep in mind.  The Stampede experience won't be anything but beneficial for AJ.

Agree BDawg. AJ could be, a young left handed Dre.  He will get better going right with more pressure than he is used to seeing in college.
Some fans see AJ going to the D league as a move of Dre coming. I am not one of those fans.  Hopefully Cho has his sights on a back up big before the deadline.
Imo, nothing out there worth giving up Dre for. He has value in grooming AJ to take over for him, along with what he gives on the court every night.
<3 that picture of AJ and Roy too ^.  AJ is a sponge with a ceiling higher than fans who want a quick fix, give him credit for.
Any word on when he will be called back? Or if Hersey Hawkins is with him in Idaho ??

Armon just needs to work on spicing up his game. Right now he's a one trick pony - driving hard left and finishing in traffic. AJ needs to learn the hesitation moves with not only his body but his eyes, work on his pull-up jumper, and please for the love of God, quit jumping to pass. He has the tools, the work ethic, and desire, but he just hasn't put it all together.

Part of me just wants to deal Dre so we are forced to see if Patty and AJ can handle big time minutes in the NBA.

He will learn, he could very well be nervous. Nate can be intimidating, to people not raised by drill sargents.

The only thing scarier, imo, than the thought of trading Dre, would be drafting another rookie pg in June and starting the shuffle again for year 5.

I've said all along that this kid should be getting some serious burn down in the NBDL.  Finally the team sent him down.  I think the more game time minutes he gets the quicker he will be able to handle the pace of the NBA.  Great move sending him down.  Great job AJ in Idaho!

AJ played two games for the Stampede over the weekend against Reno. Here's how he fared-

    Stats-
    Game #3 vs. Reno
    31 minutes, 6-8 shooting, 13 points, 0 assists, 1 turnovers, 4 rebounds

AJ got the start, but was playing alongside two other guards in a 3-guard lineup so I'm guessing Armon's taking on more of a scoring role with the Stampede judging by his 8 FG attempts and 0 assists.

    Final: Idaho 96 Reno 110

    Game #4 vs. Reno
    28 minutes, 6-13 shooting, 16 points, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 5 rebounds

AJ came off the bench during this game, but played 10 more minutes than any other member of the Stampede bench, which mean he was their 6th man and usually 6th men are scorers.

Much better in the games this weekend with keeping his turnovers down. Still lovin those rebounds.
I was hoping for an update saying AJ was on his way back . Someone has to keep a body on Rose tonight, with an even more shorthanded Blazer roster now  :(

    Stats-
    Game #5 vs. Dakota
    29 minutes, 11-16 shooting, 22 points, 5 assists, 1 turnovers, 7 rebounds

Armon was brought off the bench once again as Idaho stomped the Dakota Wizards, 121-108 (our friend Chris Johnson had 25 & 9).  It looks as if AJ is getting better adapted and his numbers have been steadily improving each game. This is by far his best statistical game: efficient shooting, getting teammates involved, few turnovers, and rebounds. The rebounds are the most impressive and telling stat. He is a tall point guard (6-3), so he should be able to transfer his success rebounding the ball in the DLeague over the NBA when he returns.

Here's a writeup the Oregonian had with him-
"I'm just trying to embrace it," Johnson, the 34th pick in the 2010 NBA draft, said after Saturday's shootaround. "I'm doing my best to embrace it and just be positive about it. It's really hard for me just to ... be away from my team, you know?"
"The biggest difference is expectations," Johnson said. "Things change. It's like, you don't really know anyone here, you're not at home, you're not as comfortable as you would be normally and you've just got to find a way to fight through it and keep your attitude the right way, because it's tough. It's real tough."

I like Armon's confidence. He's got a terrific wingspan, just needs to stretch out his range and go to his off hand a bit more. Maybe we can get him back for the playoff roster?

    Stats-
    Game #5 @ Dakota
    29 minutes, 11-16 shooting, 22 points, 5 assists, 1 turnovers, 7 rebounds

AJ continues to be the 6th man for the Stampede and it appears he's their go-to-guy on offense as he's been taking (and making) most of their shots. Again, I am thrilled to see him with 7 rebounds. I love point guards who help their big men out on the glass. Also, 1 turnover, Nate and the scouts have got to love that.

    Final: Idaho 121 Reno 108

    Game #6 @ Sioux Falls
    30 minutes, 8-15 shooting, 22 points, 6 assists, 4 turnovers, 3 rebounds

it's hard to evaluate AJ solely on the box score, but it looks like he probably reverted back to his old habits and got caught up, resulting in those 4 turnovers. The one constant throughout his DLeague stint has been his scoring which has been pretty solid.

    Final: Idaho 125 Reno 115

    Game #7 vs. Sioux Falls
    20 minutes, 7-11 shooting, 14 points, 1 assists, 1 turnovers, 0 rebounds

The back-to-back games are probably why AJ saw a 10 minute decrease in minutes. Even in 20 minutes though, I'd like to see more rebounds. Another positive is how efficient he's been shooting. I don't think he's had a game of under 50% shooting, very impressive coming from a point guard.

Final: Idaho 118 Sioux Falls 104

    Game #8 vs. Bakersfield
    32 minutes, 12-20 shooting, 22 points, 2 assists, 1 turnovers, 5 rebounds

Back to normal minutes for AJ and he delivered once again. They have won 4 straight and seem to be on a roll. Again, I wouldn't dissect his box score numbers too much without watching the game. It takes two to tango when it comes to assists so maybe his teammates just were missing?

    Final: Idaho 113 Bakersfield 102

I thought I read he had 27 points last night against Bakersfield ?  Assists are only half the pg. Teammates have to make shots too.
One is an acceptable # of turnovers, even for Nate. The kid rebounds, priceless.
Hope to see AJ back in Portland, after the all-star break.

I saw that too. I'm hoping AJ is back in Portland by the 26th, but if not, I will be watching him.
Until I see otherwise, I'm NOT convinced he can't be a Devin Harris, too soon to call now. He needs to adjust to playing with what the Blazers look like after the deadline, and with Roy back.
The picture of AJ and Roy could be a very good look into the future.

Really, unless Patty or Dre goes down, we don't need AJ this season. Roy and Rudy can both handle the ball as well. This is what the DLeague was meant for and I think he's getting better playing than he would just getting run in practice. I would love to have him back late March/Early April so he can get feel for playoff-type basketball live and in person. But overall, this experience will only make him better.

When your team is already down a center, the last thing you need is lack of defense on the ball, when your starting pg needs a rest.

Patty, resume your seat on the bench. Down the stretch, it's time for the big boys if the Blazers want to win.

Hope to see AJ get some run against the Lakers.

I'm not convinced the move for a pg is best for the team at this point.
A back up big should be priority #1 . $ should not even be an issue if the Blazers want to contend. Mr Allen wanted his precious Pattycakes to have a roster spot for 2 season. Time to pay for it. I don't want to hear about cap space and luxary tax.
I have decided that I'm ignoring the smoke, until Cho announces his move.
AJ is a rookie, no way does Nate give him the keys. AJ will be a back up. AJ has the size the defend the 1 or the 2.

Here's a good writeup from SLAM about Armon Johnson "Passing The Test"-
“It was the opposite of a demotion. It was like a promotion,” Johnson said. “ You get to move up in the world because of playing time. It’s like you turn from a rookie to a vet that quickly. I had the freedom to run the team. I had guys learning from me so it felt real good. I learned that I don’t have to be afraid to be aggressive on the court. Going down there and learning that, built up my confidence and helped me.”
The Blazers’ organization got to witness and observe true professionalism and poise from a rookie — an attribute the Sacramento Kings wish DeMarcus Cousins possessed. “I think I had a shot early in the season but I don’t think that I had the experience and the know how that I have now,” said Johnson. “That’s why I’m grateful for the D-League.”
