In his Weekend Dime, which ESPN.com is kind enough to post on Friday morning, Marc Stein comes strong with the Trail Blazers love. First, he tabs Wesley Matthews as his Most Improved Player through the first trimester of the season...

Some slight recent slippage from Matthews can't keep me from singling him out of this crowded group. The five-year, $34 million contract he snagged from the Blazers in the summer, which so many of us loudly questioned at the time, made total sense by Christmas thanks to the undrafted Matthews' fearlessness and productivity when asked by Portland to do some of the things Brandon Roy's knees aren't letting him do these days.

The responsibility Matthews has been forced to shoulder for a franchise in crisis has been immense. Had to find a way to recognize his largely unforeseen ability to handle all that, as evidenced by his 15.4 points in 31.3 minutes per game.

    True enough.

Secondly, Stein drops in a nice Q&A with Marcus Camby that is more than worth a few minutes of your time, and also drops a cool stat regarding Camby's 20-rebound games...

Marcus Camby's 20 rebounds Tuesday in Portland's loss at Dallas was his 41st career game with at least 20 boards, placing him third among active players just behind Orlando's Dwight Howard (43) and Detroit's Ben Wallace (42). Boston's Kevin Garnett (36) and O'Neal (35) are next in line.

    Thoughts?

we need Wesley to be a little more consistent, play throuh this slump and there's the possibility he could be most improved. on Marcus, that stat is really great ... it's a half a season of 20+ rebound games. even cooler is that he's only three more from taking the lead (provided Howard and Wallace don't have any more of those games!).

Wesley plays like he's a 2nd year guard.  That's his only flaw.  He needs to be more patient with his shot selection.  But I believe he, at one moment, was averaging 19 pts a game as a Portland starter while he averaged 10pts a game as a Jazz starter.  I'm sure that's different now, but 9 pt difference is pretty awesome if he can maintain that.

I put in the game chat the other day that it looked like he was trying to do too much. Not hard to figure why considering the players we have available, but hopefully he gets back to doing the things he can do (defend, hit open 3s, draw fouls).

^^Actually, Matthews is still averaging 19+ ppg as a starter, even with his recent slump.

Nice to see some positive attention for both of them. And Wesley certainly had a nice night against Minnesota, hitting the threes, defending, doing what he does best. They sure did shut him down in the 2nd half though.

Marcus is AMAZING, and I found his place on the list surprising, but very cool to see him there :)

Seems like that's the first Blazer-related article that's not on ESPN Insider this whole season!  It's about time!  I've been paying attention to the ESPN awards watch and there hasn't been a Blazer on anything the whole season, and I'm positive Stein's article will at least move Wes up on the Most Improved ladder, and maybe even Camby on DPOY.  Next I'd like to see an ESPN article on why LaMarcus should be an all-star!

Yeah, he was tripping with that Scottie Pippen reference. Nowhere as good as him, BUUUTTT, I think he can be, if he plays like a man. In Euroleague, you are taught more about finesse, and the fundamentals. He needs to put a little more muscle on, ...

Thanks Siccolo, not to knock on Bosh. I think if he was the number one option he would go back to being a beast. I miss making jokes about him playing for the RAPTORS. He is a great player.

I think what Stotts is doing is superb. His plays are great. I remember the only play he ever called for Meyers Leonard, against the Bobcats. Great movement, got LMA a good mid range look, got Batum a decent three look and the got Meyers way down ...
