for the past couple of seasons, most often due to injury, we've seen LaMarcus play a lot of center. now i know this has been necessary in order to fill in for the injured guys, or to prevent some guys from playing too much, but i'm not a big fan of him playing a lot of center; i think we get more from him at pf.

however, i'm warming up to it as it can allow us to go small and quick, add there are a lot of matchups at center where he has some sort of advantage.

i guess you could say i'm a little mixed on the subject, so  i thought i'd pose the question. what do you guys think?

i have a diffrent out look on it. I think if Marcus is going to retire soon moving lamarcus to center and trying to get a guy like kevin love. Or someone of that stature at the PF I dont know Might be something to think about. Having a possible 2 allstar bigs could be good, Sorry over thinking

Al(l-star)ridge and Camby are both the same height and LA is 5 pounds heavier. He is 1" shorter than Joel and 5 pounds lighter, so he would do well at the 5 but he is most comfy at the 4. That said, the way he has reinvented his play. he could easily adjust to playing the middle. He has certainly learned a lot from Marcus and it shows.

How he's advanced in his career has shown he can possibly develop into that position, but the one thing that he lacks is the defense presence. He's starting to become more of a post threat and should develop more hopefully, but defensively he lacks in that center spot. He isn't the enforcer like Marcus and Joel is right now, but if he's able to learn more and add that to his game I don't see why not.

He could play as center, no doubt. But I think that it would be better for the team to have LaMarcus as PF and that we should find the right center (an enforcer) if Camby retires.

It depends on the match up. against the Rockets and such other teams with little line ups center would be fine but against a team like the Magic or Celtics PF would be ideal.

I love the running game that portland is slowly starting to establish, and i haven't noticed LA having any trouble playing the 5 position. I think he is a lot quicker than many of the "bigs" in the game which gives him a huge advantage. Obviously camby is a beast on the boards but i think that when camby is out LA steps up and can hold his own.

Lamarcus can play center, but it isn't his prefered position.  More contact than he likes.  Having him on the team each year he will play center as history has proved.  He is the main attraction now a days and it would be better to pair up a young center to work along side of him.  LA would probably prefer some who would clog up the gapping hole in the 5.  Haywood from Dallas would be someone who I think would work with LA.....or a dream Bougut from Mil.  We need a center who will be large, quick and make free throws.  Keep LA at the 4.

LA can play at center for stints, esp against favorable matchups but I think he thrives going up against the less bulky power forwards. We saw how Tyson Chandler gave him a little bit of trouble in Dallas, yet players like Millsap and Jordan Hill were no match.

I couldn't agree more with Hawes last post.  LA at center for short periods during the game can work based on the days match up.

thanks guys ... the matchup comparison is kind of what i was leaning toward, especially when he's playing with the second unit. i guess my trepidation is having him at center going up against the likes of Howard and such.

Devil's Advocate...  It may be easier to find a young, traditional  4 that satisfies the long-term need who can maybe defend the 5 for stretches and compliment LA at center.  With todays NBA landscape such that it is, good young centers are not that plentiful.  In fact, good centers of ANY age are few and far between.

On a side note...  I believe it may be the time LA has put in at center that gets him his first ALL-Star bid.  With the talent in the west at the 4 being as deep as it is, LA may be a lock for coaches selection at CENTER.

Personally, I think we should look for a PF/C that is similar in size/weight to LMA, who is more of a defensive stopper and rebounds well. Then we should maintain the "best match-up" strategy, but continue calling LMA our PF. I will tell  you what though, I am going to really miss Camby's ability to pass the ball when he's gone. I suppose it would be too much to hope for a guy with those skills, along with an incredible defensive game!
